About Gotham Bar and Grill
Since first opening its doors in 1984, Gotham Bar and Grill has epitomized New York City dining at its finest, serving Executive Chef Alfred Portale's sublime and refreshingly accessible Contemporary American Cuisine in a dining room that is consistently packed with sophisticated diners from all over the country and the world.
One of the secrets of Gotham's success is that it is an institution that has never become institutional. The unparalleled quality of the food and service are constants, but the rest of the Gotham experience is constantly updated to keep the restaurant feeling as fresh as the day it opened. New menu items are introduced each season, the wine list is always evolving, and the dining room is regularly revamped.
Gotham Bar and Grill has been honored as Most Outstanding Restaurant in the nation by the James Beard Foundation, which named Chef/Owner Alfred Portale Most Outstanding Chef in the nation for 2006.

Gotham Bar and Grill Ratings and Reviews
Delicious cocktails! Excellent service! Our waiter was attentive
and had great personality! Made for such a fun evening. Food amazing we Will be back.
We had to wait about 15 minutes past our reservation time - did not bother us at all but maitre’d immediately came over apologized and paid for our drinks
I would give Gotham 5 stars for the service of the gentleman who brought us water and bread, and the man who greeted us when we arrived. My meal: Butternut squash salad, dover sole and a Touch of Honey cocktail would also be 5 stars. However, our waiter gets 1 star. My husband's flat ginger ale and steak entree that was very gristly and fatty would also get 1 star. How can you serve flat ginger ale? Uneven service and food quality to say the least. Our waiter was oddly defensive and scold-y right off the bat and at one point, seemingly ignored us on purpose by walking past our table without a glance twice after just having had long, jovial conversations with another table near by. We are nice people and were appropriately dressed so his unprofessional behavior was kind of startling. We didn't even complain to him about my husband's flat drink and gristly steak. Frankly, we wanted to minimize our interactions with our waiter. We've had a tradition of eating at Gotham to celebrate my birthday and the anniversary of our 1st date. We had poor/neglectful service last year having been seated in a sort of corner. We chalked that up to one bad waiter, and decided to try Gotham again this year. However, since we had another bad experience with a different waiter this year, we've decided to just not go back to Gotham. We can get great food at many restaurants in NYC, so for me, it's service that sets the really good ones apart.
We’ve been here a year ago and had a great memory of the restaurant. Unfortunately, this visit didn’t replicate the experience.
We had to wait 20 minutes before we were seated, although we made a reservation. After that the service was very slow and inattentive. We had to wait a very long time for our dishes with no apparent reason (the table next to ours, that was seated with us, got their dishes 20 minutes earlier). We felt very disappointed and will not come back again.
Food was excellent. Service was so so. Classic drinks ordered. Old fashion came without the staple cherry by a so called craft cocktail menu. Bar service was aloof did not really seem to care. 2 drinks $42. Waiter was not personable seemed like it was a chore for him to assist us and take our order. Supplemental staff was excellent and very attentive. Food again, was outstanding! Risotto, cod, and lobster were made to perfection.
We ordered from the lunch pre fix menu, and while everything was delicious, I found the quantity in my dish (pumpkin ravioli) to be lacking--I got 4 small raviolis, which left me hungry after. Six would have probably been more appropriate. The service was also pretty slow for what seemed to be a quiet lunch--it took nearly 25 minutes for the appetizers (all soups and salads) to arrive. It was a bit of a bummer as I was taking my parents out to a special lunch, and they were only in town for the day, so we wound up taking way longer at lunch than anticipated and it kind of cut into our afternoon plans. Overall though the ambience was great, and the food was delicious.
Out of town friends of 40 years with whom I get together every year at Christmas alternate our celebratory lunches between Washington and New York. We last had this little affair at the Gotham Bar & Grill in 2007 and I thought the time had come to repeat the experience. Of course in the interim my wife and I have dined here numeous times, but my two friends have not. I was so pleased that they liked it just as much, if not more than they did a decade ago. Besides excellent food and service, the primary characteristic of an outstanding restaurant is "consistency"; feeling confident that the kitchen will perform as they always have. This is certainly true of the GB&G and it is the reason there is no restaurant in Manhattan I would rather patronize.
One of the best restaurants in America . The consistency of its fine dinning experience is unparalleled for close to 30 years. Their approach to hospitality is at the top the service is impecable and friendly. The quality of the meals are outstanding along with their wine list . I come here with my wife when ever we can . I suppose it's our go to restaurant for special and intimate evenings of fine dining
Lovely holiday decorations, not too gaudy or overdone. The farmers market prix fixe was delicious and plated beautifully. Only downside was service was a bit off.. we were left alone for long stretches and had to ask for drinks and to order, then for coffee and the bill, when we had been in our seats for quite a while. Very gracious when they came but not as observant as expected.
We visited Gotham Bar and Grill for our wedding anniversary and had a fantastic experience. From the welcome where the recognised our special occasion to a fantastic dinner our experience was superb.
Despite arriving on time we were asked to wait in the bar area which allowed us the opportunity to enjoy some drinks (a salubrious old fashioned and champagne).
The atmosphere is busy and bustling but was not too noisy and it was easy to have a conversation at the table without the noise of the busy restaurant interfering.
With an elegant ambiance and decor and unobtrusive but very efficient service we had a wonderful first trip to Gotham and if we lived in New York I am sure we would visit more often.
The menu is arranged in 1st, 2nd and 3rd courses but essentially 1st and 2nd are appetisers and 3rd are mains. The food was delicious. We ordered Shellfish Bisque and Wild Mushroom Risotto to start which were so tasty I wanted more. For main course I ordered 28 Day Dry Aged New York Steak which was melt i the mouth good and one of the best steaks I have eaten (and I have eaten a few). My wife ordered Ora King Salmon which she enjoyed.
The bill was close to $400 making it an expensive but worthy indulgence.
Un peu trop d'éclairage pour souper romantique. La qualité des aliments, la présentation des assiettes, le choix des vins, les portions généreuses et le service excellent. Continuez votre bon travail 👌
Spectacular meal and stellar service in a beautiful location. We started with caviar and our server recommended a specific vodka, which was the perfect accompaniment. She then recommended both the steak and the sole. Both were outstanding. The final recommendation was an apple tart for two as dessert. We couldn't say no. Highly recommend for the food, service and overall experience.
The waiter was unattentive. We had to wave him down to order a second glass of wine. There was never a follow up on how the food was. The steak on the menu ordered was over cooked. The host was fantastic and the ambiance great. For the price point, I'd choose a different Restaurant.
