About Gotham Bar and Grill
Since first opening its doors in 1984, Gotham Bar and Grill has epitomized New York City dining at its finest, serving Executive Chef Alfred Portale's sublime and refreshingly accessible Contemporary American Cuisine in a dining room that is consistently packed with sophisticated diners from all over the country and the world.
One of the secrets of Gotham's success is that it is an institution that has never become institutional. The unparalleled quality of the food and service are constants, but the rest of the Gotham experience is constantly updated to keep the restaurant feeling as fresh as the day it opened. New menu items are introduced each season, the wine list is always evolving, and the dining room is regularly revamped.
Gotham Bar and Grill has been honored as Most Outstanding Restaurant in the nation by the James Beard Foundation, which named Chef/Owner Alfred Portale Most Outstanding Chef in the nation for 2006.

Gotham Bar and Grill Ratings and Reviews
Out of town friends of 40 years with whom I get together every year at Christmas alternate our celebratory lunches between Washington and New York. We last had this little affair at the Gotham Bar & Grill in 2007 and I thought the time had come to repeat the experience. Of course in the interim my wife and I have dined here numeous times, but my two friends have not. I was so pleased that they liked it just as much, if not more than they did a decade ago. Besides excellent food and service, the primary characteristic of an outstanding restaurant is "consistency"; feeling confident that the kitchen will perform as they always have. This is certainly true of the GB&G and it is the reason there is no restaurant in Manhattan I would rather patronize.
One of the best restaurants in America . The consistency of its fine dinning experience is unparalleled for close to 30 years. Their approach to hospitality is at the top the service is impecable and friendly. The quality of the meals are outstanding along with their wine list . I come here with my wife when ever we can . I suppose it's our go to restaurant for special and intimate evenings of fine dining
Lovely holiday decorations, not too gaudy or overdone. The farmers market prix fixe was delicious and plated beautifully. Only downside was service was a bit off.. we were left alone for long stretches and had to ask for drinks and to order, then for coffee and the bill, when we had been in our seats for quite a while. Very gracious when they came but not as observant as expected.
We visited Gotham Bar and Grill for our wedding anniversary and had a fantastic experience. From the welcome where the recognised our special occasion to a fantastic dinner our experience was superb.
Despite arriving on time we were asked to wait in the bar area which allowed us the opportunity to enjoy some drinks (a salubrious old fashioned and champagne).
The atmosphere is busy and bustling but was not too noisy and it was easy to have a conversation at the table without the noise of the busy restaurant interfering.
With an elegant ambiance and decor and unobtrusive but very efficient service we had a wonderful first trip to Gotham and if we lived in New York I am sure we would visit more often.
The menu is arranged in 1st, 2nd and 3rd courses but essentially 1st and 2nd are appetisers and 3rd are mains. The food was delicious. We ordered Shellfish Bisque and Wild Mushroom Risotto to start which were so tasty I wanted more. For main course I ordered 28 Day Dry Aged New York Steak which was melt i the mouth good and one of the best steaks I have eaten (and I have eaten a few). My wife ordered Ora King Salmon which she enjoyed.
The bill was close to $400 making it an expensive but worthy indulgence.
Un peu trop d'éclairage pour souper romantique. La qualité des aliments, la présentation des assiettes, le choix des vins, les portions généreuses et le service excellent. Continuez votre bon travail 👌
Spectacular meal and stellar service in a beautiful location. We started with caviar and our server recommended a specific vodka, which was the perfect accompaniment. She then recommended both the steak and the sole. Both were outstanding. The final recommendation was an apple tart for two as dessert. We couldn't say no. Highly recommend for the food, service and overall experience.
The waiter was unattentive. We had to wave him down to order a second glass of wine. There was never a follow up on how the food was. The steak on the menu ordered was over cooked. The host was fantastic and the ambiance great. For the price point, I'd choose a different Restaurant.
We were there to celebrate our engagement. When we walked in 20 min early there were two open seats at the end of the bar. Other patrons at the bar were saving seats. We went to sit down and the bartender quickly told us that those seats were saved even though no one was there and there was no where else to sit. I found a seat for my fiancé but I was forced to stand even though there were many other open seats. The food was good for fine dining but nothing to write home about. In my experience of paying upwards of $1k for a meal for Two this $400 was not worth the experience. We were highly disappointed as to celebrate such a big occasion. After it caused us to be 15 minutes late to our big bus night tour of the city of nyc and missed it so we were forced to pay an extra $60 for one with another company. We won’t be back. There are many other fine dining experiences in the city that are way better and give a lot better experiences than this one
We celebrated our anniversary here and were not disappointed. The food was awesome. I had the halibut which was perfectly prepared and probably the best I’ve ever had. My husband had the cod which was also excellent. The beet salad was delicious as was the peekytoe crab and red shrimp appetizer. Great wine list and service as well. Terrific place would highly recommend! Not cheap of course but worth it for a special occasion in NYC.
