About Gotham Bar and Grill
Since first opening its doors in 1984, Gotham Bar and Grill has epitomized New York City dining at its finest, serving Executive Chef Alfred Portale's sublime and refreshingly accessible Contemporary American Cuisine in a dining room that is consistently packed with sophisticated diners from all over the country and the world.
One of the secrets of Gotham's success is that it is an institution that has never become institutional. The unparalleled quality of the food and service are constants, but the rest of the Gotham experience is constantly updated to keep the restaurant feeling as fresh as the day it opened. New menu items are introduced each season, the wine list is always evolving, and the dining room is regularly revamped.
Gotham Bar and Grill has been honored as Most Outstanding Restaurant in the nation by the James Beard Foundation, which named Chef/Owner Alfred Portale Most Outstanding Chef in the nation for 2006.

Gotham Bar and Grill Ratings and Reviews
First rate NY restaurant experience. The wines by the glass were all amazing. The food, while not particularly adventurous, was rock solid. To start, we got the seafood salad and tuna tartare—both were fresh and in citrus dressings that heightened their flavor. For entrees, we got the miso cod and the dry aged steak, and both were phenomenal. We paired them with a red wine, and excellent craft beer, which went extremely well. Each dish was adorned with amazing complimentary vegetables. The peanut butter Sunday was perfect, and yet so rich we could not finish.
This was a major disappointment after several wonderful experiences at Gotham in the past. The signature Seafood Salad —- formerly a soaring delight —- was a shrunken shadow of its old self. Branzino entree was just average, as was Chocolate Cake desert. In no way were the current prices justified. Given the quality, prices for appetizers and entrees were at least $10 too high. Service was just “okay.” Sad to say, we won’t be coming back.
Service was impeccable- from the minute we walked in-thru our entire dinner. We had the oyster special, Washington and Maine oysters. Very fresh and delicious. Also ordered tuna tartar, kale salad, beet salad and squash salad, each was fresh and presented wonderfully. We had high expectations for our dinner entrées which fell a little short. The duck entrée and Cod fish were exquisite. We also ordered the Ranch Pork and the New York Steak. The pork was dry and missing flavor. The steak, (ordered Medium) was more med ++. They both lacked the WOW factor that would enlighten my palette. At the price per entrée this left us slightly disappointed.
Love everything about Gotham! Restaurant week is extra special to try the delicious food. They pair appropriately priced wines with lunch which makes the entire experience worthwhile from a cost perspective. The service is outstanding. Never feel rushed. We cannot wait to go back!
I have loved Gotham from the beginning. The menu and people don’t change much with time but that’s fine with me. It always feels comfortable and special at the same time. I love the elegance of the room, the professionalism of the servers and the breadth of the menu. The food is always delicious. I’ve never experienced a miss with a single dish.
We've dined at Gotham a number of times, and had looked forward to this trip as we had others. We were greeted at the hostess stand, and told it'd be a few minutes for our table. Hostess failed to offer to check our coats. OK. We sat at the bar, given seats by the restaurant owner! They (gentleman & wife) informed us they were leaving. We chatted casually, really lovely couple, and they wished us best, to enjoy our meal. We had high hopes. The food was off all night, apps lacked any flavor at all, entrees were lukewarm, and my steak was very tough. My wife, who had the black cod in the past was really looking forward to it. Sadly, it missed the mark, by a wide margin. My wife's ice cream dessert lacked flavor. She said the best part was the chocolate drizzle, this being a peanut butter sundae. Our service was off as well. Apparently a shift change, which we weren't made aware of. Looking back, our original waitperson was obviously looking forward to her night being over, because we didn't see much of her at all. The gentleman who took over was cordial, but it was too little too late. Cocktails for each of us, and wine with dinner, were the best parts of our night. I'm never one to complain about the premium price tags at great restaurants, but this fell WAY short of expectations. We were in NYC for 2 nights and had great experiences elsewhere....try Union Square Cafe! It was a great lunch! Hopefully this was just a miss for us this particular night, but we won't be back soon.
Wonderful restaurant. Service was impeccable. Just the right level of attention. Friendly. The decor is tasteful and understated. Classic. The food was amazing. Simple pumpkin tortellini abound with flavor and unexpected complexity. My wife had the salmon which she very much enjoyed. I had the duck which was perfect. Highly recommend.
