Gotham Bar and Grill
One of the secrets of Gotham's success is that it is an institution that has never become institutional. The unparalleled quality of the food and service are constants, but the rest of the Gotham experience is constantly updated to keep the restaurant feeling as fresh as the day it opened. New menu items are introduced each season, the wine list is always evolving, and the dining room is regularly revamped.
Gotham Bar and Grill has been honored as Most Outstanding Restaurant in the nation by the James Beard Foundation, which named Chef/Owner Alfred Portale Most Outstanding Chef in the nation for 2006.

Great experience as always in consistency , ambience, service
Joseph and team exceptional
Great Foie Gras!
Having been many times to the gotham since it opened, I now find that it is slipping especially in service. The food was very good but the service was slow and uneven. The restaurant also needs to refresh its decor.
Second time at Gotham bar and Grill. Food was excellent from appetizer to dessert. Service was excellent as well. Would definitely recommend this restaurant.
Always very good to excellent but this evening may have been a little off. The steak was just a little bit too done (medium rare was medium rare +), and the service a little bit less attentive than what we have experienced in the past. The food showed up too quickly, like two minutes after we ordered. But the lamb chops were fantastic. The salad was wonderful, if a little bit more dressed than we would prefer. The special desert, an apple tart, was to die for. It won my apple tart award for as long as I can remember apple tarts.
My favorite restaurant in New York. Fabulous food, service, ambience. Always an 11 out of 10!
We ordered our entrees without onions, which we were assured was fine. When the dishes arrived, they each contained onions - including the filet which was served with onion rings... When we addressed this with the staff, they replied “oh, well don’t worry we will strike that from the bill.” To make matters worse, the replacement food didn’t arrive until 40 minutes later.
Aside from these mishaps, the appetizers were delicious, and lived up to expectations.
Excellent food and service. Great wine list. Very helpful people and very nice
Excellent food and service in a lovely, understated but elegant venue. The $48 3-course lunch was truly delicious and the chocolate "cake" melts in your mouth!! Will come back every time we visit NYC.
A New York treasure
Gotham is a rarity among NYC's fine restaurants. More than 30 years in the same location, neither the dining room nor the kitchen has gotten tired. Gotham still serves delicious, carefully prepared, beautifully presented dishes. You never feel like you're in a science class or some misguided experiment in food and fashion. I'm always tempted by lots of dishes, and nothing disappoints. For me, the service invariably strikes an excellent balance -- attentive and professional but not stuffy or pretentious. They want you to enjoy your occasion and your friends, colleagues or clients, and they perceive that they are there to help make that occasion special and enjoyable, rather than to become the leading players in the show.
The food at a recent dinner I hosted was as good as ever. I had oysters, seafood salad, foie gras, beef and cheese. Many of our group, mostly new to the restaurant, raved about the tuna tartare, a pasta dish and a couple of the fish entrees -- and the best onion rings in town!
New York has over 70 Michelin starred restaurants. When it comes to wine, I can't think of any of them that does so well by its patrons as Gotham. This place appears sincerely committed to enable customers who don't have $500 or more to spend on every bottle to enjoy wines of a caliber that the food deserves. They have just refreshed the list, and I was astonished by the number and variety of wonderful options offered at fair and accessible prices. Our party enjoyed four different Chardonnay-based wines from 3 different countries, each excellent, each distinctive and brilliantly illustrating the different approaches to this all-important varietal in different regions, followed by a Barbaresco, a grand cru Graves and, with dessert, a Ribera del Duero. It was one of the best "tasting dinners" I've ever had -- and four of the seven wines cost under $150, none more than $300.
Please, please don't bring the curtain down.
My favorite NYC restaurant for over 20 years was perfect again. Amazing food, good service. It's always great!
Loved the staff! They truly served as a team! Food was so fresh and outstanding!
Excellent, as always!! We return on every trip to the city.
I had not been in a while to Gotham but it did not disappoint it was as fabulous as ever the food was excellent but our wonderful server made the meal. The tuna tartare was flavorful and fresh, the black cod the best I have ever had and my son had the toasted brioche burger and it was delicious. The fries with it fresh and crispy. I had the trip of sobet ( pear, raspberry and apricot) sublime. The chocolate cake was perfection. It will not be so long again. ( ps hope my son gets into NYU I will be back more often )
Food was delicious as always. The sommelier helped me select the perfect red burgundy.
Delicious great service knowledgeable staff! Super night for our anniversary!
Gotham Bar and Grill never ever disappoints. The Miso Cod entree is its signature dish and something I always get!!!
Great food, great service, great ambiance.
Excellent meal and environment; classy place. Our wait staff lost touch with us for a bit, but others excellent experience.
Gotham has been my favorite restaurant for years. I remember the first time I went, and what an amazing experience it was, and how original and delicious and exciting the meal was.
I have been there several times over the last decade or more, and always was impressed with the vibe and ambiance.
We were once again greeted with professionalism, and when the Maitre d’ noticed the special request on our reservation, he had us set at a very nice table.
This time was different, though. We noticed small chinks in the armor that signifies that the restaurant may be losing its focus and attention to the small details.
Sometimes small things make a difference. For example, the waiter never came to take a cocktail order, and instead just took our whole order with our cocktails. The bread seemed stale and cold, and the menu appeared unchanged since our last visit.
We are by no means food critics, but the rack of lamb and pork chop were both way over salted.
The dessert was ok, and featured a birthday candle and personalized birthday wish, which was nice.
But as we looked over the amazing room, half-empty on a Saturday night after one seating, it dawned on us that this once great fixture of Nyc may have past its prime.
It makes me really sad to say that I think we’ve had our last meal there. Really sad.
Old school place. Been excellent for many years. Getting a little tired. Reception was very friendly. Food was good but not excellent. Clearly cater to established clients with tourists being second tier.
Our enthusiasm for Gotham was dampened by the table we were given - not bad enough to complain about, but not good enough to make us enthusiastic about Gotham. When I made the reservation and when I confirmed it, I had requested a 'separate' table, but I didn't know remember to say: NOT in the main traffic area in front of the steps leading to the bathrooms!
It was a wonderful anniversary dinner celebration. Three out of four main courses were delicious, the fourth good. Our server was excellent while unobtrusive. Looking forward to our next meal there.
Excellent and attentive service. Went for a special occasion, which was noted appropriately by the staff. The wine director was particularly helpful.
Birthday dinner. My father wouldn’t stop talking about the markup on the wines.
This was a peak experience: food was creative and fabulously presented, waiter couldn’t of been more gracious, atmosphere lovely, noise was a buzz and not too loud, all in all a fabulous experience. It wasn’t cheap but we felt we got our moneys worth.
Just one of the best restaurant in NYC. Love their fall desserts. Love this place!
Amazing food, stunning service, in a gorgeous room. Worth every cent.
Gotham Bar and Grill excelled as they have on all my occasions - the quality is at a very high level. The sommelier did a great job of helping me selecting the right wine for both budget and food. The thing to remember is that this is fine dining and the prices are in that range
I have been dining here since my 50th birthday almost 19 years ago and it remains consistently excellent for both food and service. I am going to have to get out of my tuna tartare and miso marinated cod rut however.
Excellent Excellent! Food and Ambience was perfect. We had a friendly get together with old friends our restaurant choice was a smash! Gotham Grill does not disappoint
I took my boyfriend here for his birthday. We indulged in all courses, all amazing. The bottle of wine the wine director recommended to us was spot on. The attention to detail really made the experience. The service from when we walked in the door to when the maítre d again wished my boyfriend a happy birthday as we exited was exceptional. This is a place one can go again and again. And we will do just that.
What a delightful experience. The food was outstanding, the service sublime, and the atmosphere both entertaining and comfortable. We were late for our reservation due to transit issues, but were greeted so warmly by everyone when we finally showed up. We had a wonderful view of the room from our table. Especially appreciated the maitre d" stopping by to ask how our dinner was. Made us feel special.
Never a disappointment, will always come back. Seasonal food fitting for the time you are there b
An excellent evening was had by us at the restaurant. The wine list was enjoyable. The service was very accommodating to all of our requests.
Lovely as usual. I had the vegetarian option and it was fabulous. The gazpacho was unusual with some fruit, delicious!
Service was great! Very accommodating. Food was very good. HALIBUT WAS TERRIFIC. Only quibble was $18. For an Aperole spritzer...when did drinks get so expensive?
Absolutely fabulous! The best rack of lamb I’ve ever had. Comprehensive wine list-helpful sommelier. Service was impeccable. Restaurant acknowledged our anniversary with chocolates.
Great food highlights were the bourbon glazed pork, lamb rack and chanterelle tortellini one of the most delicious dinners ever in NY!
On entering we were greeted by a friendly, down to earth, engaging and professional Maître D’. No condescension or air of superiority that one finds at too many NYC restaurants. That warm, sincere greeting was followed by exceptional service from many others, excellent starters (the heirloom tomato, burrata and peach salad was a winner) and mains (the halibut was amazing) with fair proportions, and an accommodation for my wife who requires no salt. Fantastic dessert menu, which we unfortunately had no capacity to enjoy. But I will be back for the soufflé.
