One of the secrets of Gotham's success is that it is an institution that has never become institutional. The unparalleled quality of the food and service are constants, but the rest of the Gotham experience is constantly updated to keep the restaurant feeling as fresh as the day it opened. New menu items are introduced each season, the wine list is always evolving, and the dining room is regularly revamped.
Gotham Bar and Grill has been honored as Most Outstanding Restaurant in the nation by the James Beard Foundation, which named Chef/Owner Alfred Portale Most Outstanding Chef in the nation for 2006.

I made the reservation online one month before the visit, to make sure we had a table when my husband turned 50. The day before, the restaurant wanted me to confirm the reservation and I got a bounce back that we were welcome. When we arrived the day we booked...... the restaurant was CLOSED. The sign said it was closed on Saturdays. I can’t describe how disappointed we got.........
This was not our first time to Gotham Bar and Grill but it was the first time we left disappointed. Our party of four tried various apps, seafood entrees and four different desserts. Nothing was bad but nothing was memorable either. The portions are small. The scallop ceviche app for example is one scallop cut into thirds. The madai entree came with flabby fish skin not crispy and the side was about a tablespoon of beans. The octopus entree is appetizer size in our opinion. The "vegetable for the table" was three small slices of tomato. The pane perdu dessert came with about a teaspoon of ice cream.
The flavor of the dishes was middle of the road. Service was fine albeit a little rushed. Plates were cleared before everyone had finished the course for example. We left disappointed and underwhelmed.
Gotham hasn't changed a bit since the last time I was there...maybe better!
We enjoyed the “old” menu and food. Not impressed with the new menu or food. Our server was wonderful but overall service was poor
Very strange new chef and menu. We are repeat customers but will not be going back. Service also spotty. Check menu online before you go.
We always have a wonderful time at Gotham Bar & Grille. If you are a foodie, this is your place. From date night to friends gathering to a special, client dinner, this is your “go to” place. Joseph always goes above and beyond to bring a warm to the setting that sometimes is unusual to find in an upscale venue. Truly exceptional!!!
We celebrated a birthday at Gotham a few days ago. It was a lovely evening. We certainly enjoyed the beautiful and dramatic decor and the service was excellent. Had a delicious hibiscus mule cocktail! We had 2 wonderful appetizers, including the spaghetti neri with octopus and also the burrata with trout roe. The only not so great item was the poussin, which was somewhat dull and uninspired. My husband's steak was excellent, as was the veggie side. Hopefully, the new chef will enlarge the menu in the future.
Birthday and Anniversary. We have been coming to Gotham for years!! We were so disappointed on all levels. There really was not a part of the evening that was enjoyable.
Wonderful food and service. I have enjoyed Gotham for many years and the new menu and chef are stellar. I will be back!
This restaurant used to be a favorite of ours. My wife first dined there a couple of days after the Restauant first opened in 1984 and we have been coming back regularly ever since. While the menu was pretty stable the options were excellent and Chef Portale’s food was always delicious. Under the new chef the menu is more limited and while the food was well prepared and presented, some menu items were not as flavorful and pleasing as we would have liked. What was even more displeasing was the decline in value. A glass of wine cost $20 to $23 for wine that was adequate but not exceptional and a pour was about 1/4 of a glass vs the traditional 1/3 of a glass. The restaurants owners are clearly trying to expand their margins on wine. Entries ranged from the mid $30’s to $125 for a strip steak with fries. The food prices seemed generally higher and some seemed to us to be excessive, even if your tab is being charged to a business credit card. So in summary, Gotham Bar and Grill has gone from a restaurant with reliably great food to one with a more limited menu of dishes most of which won’t stand the test of time. Even more important, it has gone from an expensive restaurant that offered a reasonable value proposition to one that is charging more for a less pleasurable dining experience. We recognize that the new chef may need time to get her sea legs and would be inclined to give the Gotham another try. But if the value proposition doesn’t improve, I doubt that we will be coming back often, if at all. We have wonderful memories of past dinners at the Gotham Bar and Grill and we are very sorry to see it change for the worse.
Gotham has been our go to place for special dinners for many years. We have never been let down until last night. The cocktails, menu selections, desserts, and incredibly attentive service have been something we have anticipated for days before the event. After being closed for weeks for renovation and the change of chefs (Victoria Blamey), we arrived to find a coat of paint and shabby new light fixtures didn't really change the look much. What was completely different was incredibly limited menu with so many unfamiliar ingredients that the whole group immediately went on their phones to see what the strange ingredients seemed worth ordering. Not even a salad or a soup? Come on. I lived for the melon gazpacho and the heirloom tomatoes salad! The iberico pork cheek appetizer was greasy tough and served on almost raw ceci neri that were way too salty. The steak special was fatty, tough and served with lukewarm fries cooked in beef fat. I can see whyTimes’ Pete Wells called one of her dishes “an erotic poem on the theme of fat." The waiter even warned us about the lamb. "It's a really fatty cut." The Madai was about an ounce of fish on a big plate. At least it was tasty?
In the end, the service was still pretty good and we enjoyed our cocktails and dessert.
Time to find another restaurant.
Very disappointing. This had been one of our go to restaurants. We took important guest and were embarrassed. Menu is all tricked up. They couldn’t even get the steaks cooked to temperature (rare vs medium etc). The service tried to overcome the kitchen but it was too much. We will wait two months and give it one more chance. If not we will wait for the next executive chef.
New menu not as good by new Chef. Prefer the former menu. Limited choice.
Very tastfull food. Extraordinary experience.
I returned for a visit after an anniversary dinner years ago. I found everything to be as remembered and expected. Attention to detail, attentive service and the sophistication of the menu selections we're both delightful and impressive. It will be the first item on my checklist whenever I return to New York City.
