Chef Chris is a genius! Innovative, fresh fabulous in every aspect. Nina is a gem and puts her whole soul into making our dining experience one to remember. From the first explosion of flavor to the last over the top dessert course, we savored every bite and minute with these two remarkable professionals
An exceptional experience orchestrated by the Chef and his charming wife. The duo manage a small dining room with a multicourse tasting menu that is imaginative, artistic and delicious. BYOB helps manage the cost of the unique and quite memorable experience. Well worth the trip from downtown.
If I could give 6 stars I would! Our experience was amazing, the food was incredible, and Nina and Chris added so many little special touches to make my fiancé feel special for his birthday. I would highly recommend goosefoot to anyone who is looking for a very special evening without the stuffiness and sometimes cold nature of the typical Michelin restaurant.
This remains our absolute favorite restaurant in all of Chicago and we have been to +50 to include many Michelin starred places. Food is remarkable. Graciousness of Nina and Chris is outstanding. They love what they do and its reflected in the entire evening.
We had a wonderful meal at Goosefoot. The tasting menu was artfully prepared and delicious. The chef/owners/hosts - John and Nina go out of their way to make everyone feel welcome.
It was my observation that because of the nature of the dinner, each course is served simultaneously to each diner. As a result, it appeared that we had to wait for the arrival of a latecomer before service could begin. So we waited well over 1/2 hour.
That said, this delay did not dampen the wonderful dinner.
Chris and Nina have a fabulous thing going with their amazing restaurant. With a maximum of 20 guests possible, Goosefoot is extremely intimate. From the greeting at the door by Nina and then a visit by chef/husband Chris at your table, the evening feels as if you've been welcomed into their home.
The food is spectacular- each and every course. You'll want to close your eyes and savor each bite. It is easy to choose from the wine options they suggest to compliment your meal. We bought a half-bottle of champagne to start things off and then a full bottle of wine for the meal.
With such an intimate venue, there is one seating per night. All tables are served the same course from the tasting menu at the same time. The pacing is perfect once the last guests arrive, and you'll have a difficult time deciding which course is your favorite.
Dining at Goosefoot is a complete experience. The music is all chosen by Nina (no pre-configured soundtrack). There is a charming story to go with each course. Chris comes out to your table to serve and give you the back story. Each night also has a theme, agreed upon by Chris and Nina. Near the end of the evening, Nina sets up a lovely still life to mirror the theme. It makes for a fun way to close out the evening. That, and the kinetic paper cranes, seeds from their garden, and their very own Goosefoot chocolate, left us delighted.
An evening at Goosefoot is a combination of romantic foodie-heaven with a bit of performance art thrown in. All that happens, from the very welcoming greeting to the fond farewell makes for a true night to remember.
My husband and I had a wonderful meal conjured by Chef Chris and hosted by Nina! Our favorite dishes were the ones featuring the corn soup and the heirloom tomato soup. If we could get full thermoses of those we would be happy campers.
I was very impressed by Nina; I mentioned that I had tried to get into a previous reservation with my parents and she remembered their names! We even sat in the exact same location as my parents, what a coincidence! She was a great entertainer :) Chef Chris was also very personable and charming! We enjoyed looking at pictures of their private garden.
I would only recommend that they may use a second pair of hands to help Nina serve food throughout the night, but it was otherwise a fantastic dinner. Thank you for a memorable night, Chef Chris and Nina!
Chris and Nina Nugent have reinvented the atmosphere dining! Loved their "theme" and appreciated Nina's personal anecdotal stories and how it affected their menu. Food was fantastic - tasty and filling. An amazing experience that we will hopefully have again soon!
This is a special occasion venue.. It's BYOB and Nina will be happy to speak with you about the menu so you can plan accordingly. The room is quiet and sophisticated with just enough room for about 20 people. Nina works the front of the house and Chris is chef extraordinaire. Both are amazingly creative and passionate and you will spend time chatting with both and feel they are somewhat friends when you leave. Nina rotates which tables get served first with the various courses, but all are presented within minutes of each other. This experience is for people who appreciate the extended dining scene. My clients/friends and I were ready to go by the end and I sensed other groups (not all) were getting antsy to conclude as well. Maybe because it was a week night. But I am very happy to have gone here and would recommend enthusiastically.
Best food and creativity. The couple worked so well together and had the theme of the Beatles to go along with music being played. The husband and wife team of chief and server worked so well and made us feel like we are at home. Best meal I've had in my lifetime.
In addition to a beautiful (and absolutely Michelin-star worthy) dining experience, we enjoyed being hosted by two of the nicest people we've met in the industry; Chris and Nina are welcoming, friendly and genuinely fun to be around. We were also happy to learn that a selection of lovely wines is now available for purchase to pair with the courses, which made the BYOB aspect not only convenient but also perfectly matched for both our tastes and the amazing food.
We look forward to another wonderful tasting menu and visit with the Nugents.
After trying for a couple of years to get into Goosefoot, we forgot all about it. Glad we remembered it! We had a lovely Saturday evening marking my husband's birthday (although a bit long at 4 hrs) in an intimate environment with 14 other like minded individuals. The husband (Chef Chris) and wife (Nina, everything else!) team gave us a memorable evening by presenting us with lovely, original preparations and presentations of all kinds of food (but noticeably light on the proteins). The over-riding theme of the evening was presented while the dessert courses were going on: an homage to the Beatles! The space that earlier served as the staging area for the courses became a mini-psychedelic altar to John and George. The menu was presented before we started (but of course as is the current style, each dish was a list of ingredients and to make it even more opaque, several of the courses were served together but you didn't know that until they came!) Standouts included the foie gras mousse, maitake mushroom tortellini, "crabapple", corn shoup course and several of the desserts. The beef course was suprisingly dry even though it was presented perfectly bright pink. The chocolate bars to take home were gorgeous to look at and surprisingly spicy and textural (not chili spicy--spice spicy!). The seeds to start our own pea shoot garden were also a personal and unique touch. It's the night that keeps giving for several weeks thereafter. Definitely worth the trip. Parking is free and super easy. We also really appreciated the hand written notes of congratulations on our menus.
This was the single best dining evening experience my wife and I have experienced. The food, the ambience, and the presentation is amazing. As described in a previous review, it is an experience similar to have been invited to a chef and his wife's home for dinner. The BYOB option helps add value to the price.
Phenomenal food that lives up to the hype. The edge with pea shoot starter was sublime. The Portuguese tomato soup with cardamon oil was beyond belief. Every course was flavorful and meticulously presented. I would go back in a heartbeat and highly recommend it.
From the ambience, to the service Goosefoot nailed everything 110%! Then we get to the food. Words can't describe how amazing every bite was. Usually at a prefix menu there are one or two courses that aren't great, but atGoosefoot every bite was better than the next! The soups , lobster and beef were second to none and the dessert was unreal. Being a byob it is less than other prefix meals with wine pairings, which was great! I definitely recommend Goosefoot to anyone who wants any amazing meal, with amazing chefs and service!
