Golden Mast Ratings and Reviews
Although my review says I'd recommend this restaurant, I would do so with hesitation. We have enjoyed the Golden Mast brunch for many, many years. Whenever there is a special occasion, we choose the Golden Mast. Today, however, we were somewhat disappointed. First the positives: 1) I had requested a table near the window and was delighted to find that my request was honored. We had a beautiful table in the big dining room with a lovely view of the lake. 2) All the servers were very attentive, pleasant and efficient.
Our disappointment resulted from the following: First, two different pieces of our place setting were filthy--not dried on food particles, but actually greasy food as though the piece was not washed at all. The same thing happened with our creamer receptacle. It looked like it had been used for French dressing and never washed before pouring cream into it.
In addition, we experienced the longest line we've ever had in the made-to-order omelette and dessert stations. The chefs working there were calm and doing the best they could, but at one point there were 16 people in line;
Lastly, the selection of desserts was more limited than in the past. We only saw two ramekens of Creme Brulee and it was never replenished. (We were there at 11:00am, so they shouldn't have run out so early in the brunch service).
Hans was not there today so I was unable to voice my concern over the quality of the experience. Again, this has been our favorite brunch restaurant for many years, and I don't want to give up on it. I hope this was just an isolated incident.
Had a great family Thanksgiving here. We asked for-and got-a round table overlooking the lake. The family style traditional Thanksgiving dinner was as good as homemade! The 2 waiters were attentive, however, we had to act for several refills of the gravy boat! Overall, a great way to celebrate a holiday in a beautiful setting! We’ll be doing this again!
This was my first time and I was very happy with the choice. I am also glad to know it is a German restaurant. A bit pricey but that is to be expected with authentic foods. The location is perfect, right on the lake. In warmer weather there is outdoor seating options. We were seated in the balcony overlooking the lake. It was perfect. Food was excellent.
The Golden Mast has always been one of our favorite restaurants. However, as we no longer live in the immediate area we don't get there often. We made a reservation for the Sunday brunch on November 12th which was to serve as our family "Thanksgiving Dinner" get together for our entire family before we headed off to Fl for a few weeks.
As usual The Golden Mast came thru for us and provided a great experience. First, you know a restaurant cares about its customers when the owner not only greets you when you walk in but also leads you to your table.
That greeting is followed up with a food selection which was fantastic and which was was prepared and presented wonderfully. Our server(s) were friendly, attentive and professional. All aspects of the meal were delicious, from the waffles and omletes to the main entre meat dishes, the shrimp, the sides, the champagne, and finally the deserts, everything was perfect.
Plus, you can't beat the beautiful restaurant itself and a view that is unsurpassed.
You know that when all of the grandkids are impressed and thank us for taking us to "the great restaurant", and our 10 year old granddaughter even said she wants to have her wedding reception there, the event was a success. Once again, our thanks to The Golden Mast and it's owner Hans Weissgerber for a great experience.
The bartender was especially helpful and mixed a special drink for my wife who prefers somewhat sweet crafted martinis (called tall, dark, and handsome (vodka, butterscotch schnaps, and dark crème de cacao). Dinner was not rushed and ample time allowed between courses.
We had six of us for our dinner on Sunday, October 29th to celebrate a 32nd wedding anniversary, and good friends. We were seated at a wonderful table overlooking the lake. We stopped at the bar prior to being seated and had drinks from a great bartender!
We didn't order appetizers, however, each had a delicious entree and we shared two desserts. The meals were fabulous with servings enough to take home leftovers. The walleye was moist and tasty. The wiener schnitzel was amazing. Dessert was excellent.
Our server was wonderful and checked in on us without distraction.
We will return frequently. Love it here. Thank you!
Overall, we had a great experience and very good food. Service is always fantastic! I did get the wrong steak for my dinner, it seemed like I got someone else's steak since it was not only the wrong steak, but the wellness was much different than I had ordered. Being the main part of my meal, that was very disappointing, but not enough to ruin the evening. I didn't complain to the waitress, just ate my meal and thought the kitchen had just overcooked my steak. Everyone can make mistakes, right? But when we got our bill, I noticed we were overcharged for what I ordered and that's when I realized I probably got someone else's steak entirely. The waitress did very quickly correct our bill, but that didn't change the fact that I had to chew and chew on that overdone steak. I wish I had spoken up sooner, perhaps they would have gotten me a new steak done to my liking! Nevertheless, we will certainly dine here again. If you haven't tried the brunch, it is a must, you won't be sorry!
The food is really good but some is fairly expensive. I was there twice within a month. The first time there was a wedding and things going on and getting the food in everything else took longer than usual. Also this last time and the other time parking was an issue and I even have a handicap parking permit. There needs to be more handicap spots
Dan and I enjoy coming to the Golden Mast, especially for a special occasion (birthday or anniversary. We have always enjoyed the good food and great service.
This past occasion was a little disappointing. The prime rib was very tasty and tender that I had, sadly the lobster was a little over cooked and did not have the usual sweet taste you are known for. Dan's dinner was the combination plate, he enjoyed it very much, no complaints.
The waiter was not very attentive to us or the other tables near us. He never asked if we wanted another cocktail or another soda. We are not sure if he is new, not feeling well or at the end of his shift. We always have had great service from the wait staff at the Golden Mast, so this was a little disheartening. He did bring a birthday schaum torte dessert for me which was very nice of the restaurant to provide a guest.
Overall we will still come to the Golden Mast, hopefully, the recent visit was just a fluke. Sorry we could not give a better review, we do enjoy the restaurant.
Thanks, Dan and Georgiane Delie
Over all our dinning experience was okay. It was a Sunday with a small to moderate crowd . The hostess sat me and my wife in corner table right of the fireplace . I had a decent view of the lake which is something both my wife and I enjoy . My wife's view was limited . Then the hostess sat another party at a table right next to us .(not cool) After all she had plenty of room to seat them even one table over. The food and the waitress were satisfactory . My prime was to be more medium rare . It was more rare than medium . I did enjoy it and felt as though it was not worth the trouble to send back. Next time I would just order medium. After it was all said and done I had conversation with the hostess after we were getting ready to leave . I inadvertently said it was my wife 35th wedding anniversary . She asked if I'd mention that to our waitress. I said no, she said had we they would have comped our desert . To bad they didn't ask what was the occasion. Free desert would have made up for the other failings . One to ten I'd give it six .
Our dinner was great, service excellent. The food very well presented. I had filet mignon and mashed potatoes with vegetables, and 4 ounces of the split crab legs with melted butter. The stuffed mushroom appetizer with brie, pecans and cranberry jam was very good. Everything was superb, until dessert. Do not get the key lime pie! It was grainy, overly sweet, and not real key lime flavor. Wish I would have gotten the creme brulee. Overall a good experience, would definitely recommend for a special occasion.
Frozen greenbeens stright from any high school lunch no flavor and still hard. Steak was not cooked correctly, no flavor made my son sick. Very expensive for very poor food. The only thing didn't mess up was the baked potatoes. Spent the rest of the in the bathroom. We will never go back.
Our dinner itself was good- our server was great (very attentive service!) my lack of stars on this category was for our experience at the bar. It took 20 minutes (with only 6 other guests at the bar and 2 bartenders serving drinks- or lack there of) to get one round of drinks.
It was our 51st anniversary! Wanted to go to some place special. We haven't been there for several years! Saw you had a brunch, so we decided to come! This is the weirdest brunch we have ever been too! We like to either order or go up and pick out what we like! Several items we don't eat! The tray idea is not what we liked. When we asked the waitress about "I bet you waste a lot of food." Her answer was the owner has a compost pile and they put it in there. We felt it was wasteful! Not a good system for a brunch! Everyone I have told about how your brunch was, was appalled by it and the waste!
We were staying on the lake and took some people there. It is quite expensive for what you get. Three of us had weiner schnitzel and it was very dry. We get it in Milwaukee a few times a year and it is much juicier. The bread appetizer was very good. The waitress was nice and had obviously been there a long time. I don't know that I would go back, or at least I would not get the schnitzel if I did.
