I was slightly disappointed, not so much in the quality of the food, but the fact that the serving temperature of my duck entree was not as hot as I would have liked. The dining room is beautiful and has a great view looking toward downtown Tucson. Portion sizes were nice—not too large, as so many restaurants seem to serve these days.
Wonderful. Pleasant, beautiful setting. Judy and Cathy are excellent servers. Ask for them. Brunch is wonderful here.
My wife and I took friends to the Gold room for dinner on Tuesday of this week. We had been there once or twice many years ago and based on reviews we decided to try it again. The food was so awful that I was embarrassed to have brought friends. I should have raised some objection at the time but didn't want to make a scene in front of friends. I had Halibut, the special; it was way over cooked, no evidence of the Halibut remained, it had the consistency of chicken and and very dry. Looked like it started out as a nice piece of fish that was totally ruined. Two other meals were scallops, four very small pieces that were also over-cooked; tough and grainy. It is shame to ruin originally high quality food by cooking it to dust.
The evening was, in general, an embarrassment to me.
Excellent scallops over corn risotto. Interesting brussel sprout salad. Good lamb tenderloin with roasted potatoes though overall that dish was not very hot. Berry cobbler for dessert seemed a little pedestrian. Nice views of the city. Knowledgeable, attentive, friendly waitress. Not so much with the hostess who had slotted us for a booth. When we asked for a table (we both have back issues) you would have thought we were asking to move to the next town. She told us she had only one table for two left (which turned out to be less desirable) and then proceeded to seat other couples at more desirable tables after us. So much for making a reservation. We felt maybe we were being punished for making what we felt was a reasonable request, despite having done so politely.
We met friends for brunch on a Sunday, having eaten there before. A nice brunch, not overly large but more than satisfactory with lots of options and a great price. However, service was terrible. Took more than 10 min to even be noticed and sat, despite the restaurant only having 3 tables with people at the time. Took forever to get drinks and to pay.
The Gold Room at the Westward Look resort has beautiful views and the property itself is lovely. The restaurant menu is not large but does feature local products when possible. Our food was well prepared and tasty but is quite expensive for what you get. My husband ordered crab fritters as his starter. One less fritter and they would be required to call it a FRITTER... In other words, the dish contained just two very small fritters on a pile of greens. My salad was called a beet salad, but beets were not the star. The beets had been sliced paper thin and there were about six slices under the pile of greens.
The scallops were delicious and plentiful -- they should be for $30. My husband's steak was well prepared and presented beautifully. He reported that he has had better filets.
The key lime pie had a very odd flavor -- perhaps it was topped with toasted coconut that masked what should have been a fresh citrus flavor.
The wine list provides a lot of expensive options -- they are really proud of even modest wines.
We are locals and probably won't return.
The view was great, and would be even better at a time when it's warm enough to sit on the patio. It was nice and quiet (a change from most places these days), but that's because the dining room was deserted, which is a little odd for a resort in Tucson in January. It was so empty that you could easily hear the conversations of the few who were there, which made us feel self conscious about our own conversation topics. The menu was enticing--a nice mix of vegetarian, seafood, and meat. The quality of food was very good. They were prompt in bringing a generous plate of good bread before we even ordered. And they gave us a free dessert--of their choosing--for the birthday guest. It wasn't bad, but we would have rather chosen our own dessert. In spite of all this goodness, this will be a "one and done" place for us--the prices were just too much for what we ordered, especially the $13 crab fritters which consisted of two grape (at best)-sized "fritters" perched on top of a parfait glass stuffed with lettuce. The salads were very good, but very small as well. The seared & smoked scallops were interesting and delicious, and possibly worth the price. It wasn't a horrible experience by any means, but we probably won't be back.
Great service. Atmosphere lovely and service fabulous
Took my fiance here for our two year dating anniversary. Food and service were fantastic! Made a great anniversary dinner date.
Menu was a bit limited, but the food was well prepared and tasty. Service was slow (e.g. 10 min to get water) and the kitchen seemed backed up on this Tuesday evening. Our order of scallops had to be redone for some reason which may have caused our delay. Other diners who arrived after us were served before we got our meals.
Made reservations for wife's birthday dinner & were seating right away. I had flowers arrangement delivered to hotel and they were on the table waiting for us. Special dessert whipped up by the kitchen and the evening was perfect. Quiet atmosphere is conducive to romance, celebration, business or just relaxing. Indoor & outdoor seating are equally great with views (it is Arizona after all). We even witnessed a successful marriage proposal at the table next to us! Great place, can't wait to go back.
Nice outdoor patio but the food was just OK. Cost was high relative to slow service and level of quality. The name of the restaurant does not define the experience. More like bronze.
So enjoyable, we are returning next week with other friends!
Gold is usually great but this night I found the food dull. It was good but lacked the zing that makes you want to come back and eat it again.
My wife and I frequent Gold multiple times per year. We live about 20 miles north of the resort but it is worth the trip. We ordered the filet's this time and they were cooked perfect. The only criticism I have is the wine list. It is loaded with $200 + wines. That is ridiculous. They need to add more wines to the list in a more moderate price range.....$50 to 75. I certainly enjoy a good wine but 2012 to 2014 vintages are just about as good as something from 1996. I don't want to pay for a wine being rare. I am sure the White Hall Lane wine was well past its peak no matter how well it was stored. An expensive wine list does not make a restaurant very good. An extensive wine list makes it better for a person to choose what range they want to pay.
First, my wife and I have had dinner several years ago and the food was outstanding. The ambiance was as beautiful as we remembered and the service was good. The food presentation was great but both dishes were extremely over spiced and salted so that you could not even taste the Salmon or the Scallops. The best thing we ate was the strawberry salad. I am not sure we will try again at this point.
A repeat restaurant for us. The scallops are to die for. Wine list is fair....you can find something you will like. A lot of tables have a good scenic view. Service has been very good to excellent every time we have gone there.
Gold is great! It always pleases us with superior food, excellent service and a quiet atmosphere. I had the shrimp with polenta and my husband had the salmon. Service was prompt but non-intrusive. We were four people and all had a delightful time. Thanks Gold.
Another wonderful meal at Gold! Our appetizers were perfect, the salads were fresh and beautifully presented, and we asked to split an entrée. The kitchen split our portions perfectly and each was served elegantly. Dessert was a house made gelato that was out of this world. Our server Katie was , as always, fantastic. Thanks to everyone on the team for making it another great experience.
They did not actually have our reservation listed from Open Table, but there was not trouble getting a table. GOLD is one of our favorite fancy, special occasion restaurants.
Stayed at Westward Look for a solo runaway and booked a reservation at Gold as I do each time I stay. My server was great and she took perfect care of me. Nice wine selections by the glass, a lovely charcuterie plate and a delicious chicken rice soup. The entire meal was enjoyable and delicious. I saw some local couples dining here while I was there and that made me happy!
This is a wonderful restaurant. We had the filet and it was so tender and tasted wonderful. The service was fantastic. The wine is pricey, but they have a good selection. The view is beautiful at night. Highly recommend this place for a nice romantic dinner.
We had an early dinner on a hot summer evening at the Gold Room, so, although the hotel was fully booked, there were only a few other diners in the room. We had a lovely view over Tucson. We were seated right at a window table, but we were besieged by an annoying fly. Our waitress was excellent, and she recommended that we move to another table further from the window; that took care of the fly problem. The wine was good and reasonably priced, and the smoked scallops were outstanding. We will return.
I took my 89 year old father there for father's day and he really enjoyed it.
Went there to celebrate our 25th anniversary. I took my wife there on a date ~25 years ago. The place is OK. Flowers were on our table (nice touch) but they were a few days old and droopy. The service was good when the server was present - there were periods of time when you couldn't find a server. The bread served early was yummy but, we waited again for a pretty good piece of time and when the bread showed up, one type (rosemary) was cold while the other (garlic) was warm. ? We were sitting at a nice table but it was directly under a A/C vent. When I mentioned that I was freezing and that I had to adjust where I was seated at the table because I was beginning to freeze under the vent, the server immediately shut the fan off (nice touch.) Parking was a breeze - parked right next to the front door. They packed us a desert (anniversary extra gift) which was nice. We didn't order it - it was a "freebie" from the restaurant.
I noted that I wouldn't recommend GOLD to my friends on this survey however, it is not that the place is BAD, it is just that I think given our experience, I think there are other restaurants that they would be more interested in.
We dine at Gold regularly. The restaurant is consistent having a good menu, tasty food, great service and the option of eating outside weather permitting. This last visit was to celebrate my wife's birthday. We find the price point to be very acceptable for a resort based restaurant.
There were very few people in the restaurant but, nevertheless, service was very slow and it took a long time for the meal to finally get to our table. The $8.00 salad we ordered was the smallest salad we have ever been served at a restaurant. The glass of wine my wife had cost more than an entire bottle of the same wine at Total Wine. The view was great.
I showed up to celebrate my 7th wedding anniversary and found an empty restaurant and no one staffing the desk. I was ignored by the staff that was focused on setting up for a massive business group (Caterpillar) that started pouring into the restaurant and pushing us out of the way. A manager came by but didn't ask anything and just said someone will be by. We continued to wait and decided our money would be better spent elsewhere. I used to hear amazing things about The Gold Room, but GOLD is a pathetic shadow of the former restaurant. Unless you're part of a large group of important business people that are bringing money into the hotel, don't except to be paid attention to at GOLD. You're better off anywhere else.
Party of six, dined on their outstanding patio. lovely evening enjoying the views. Service was outstanding! Everyone enjoyed the meal and drinks. Grits & shrimp was an especially good dish. Scallops, steaks & salads were among the main course items ordered. All were prepared excellently . Highly recommend Gold.
The staff was very polite and recommended several wines . Also, recommended several dishes that were wonderful!
Excellent service, excellent food. The quiet atmosphere was a wonderful change from most of today's noisy restaurants.
We had a wonderful dinner and breakfast at the The Gold Room. We will definitely be coming back!
We went to GOLD on our anniversary and had a wonderful time! The waitress was very attentive to our needs and very helpful in suggesting and recommending item on the menu we might like. The atmosphere was quiet and the view was to die for!
We will definitely come here for special occasions with family and friends!
This was our 15th wedding anniversary and we so appreciated the congratulatory greetings when we arrived. The food was very good, cooked the way we ordered. Our surprise dessert was also very good. Service was attentive and quick for refills or to ask how everything was. We appreciated all the attention given!
While the food was ok it took forever to get. Then after we finally got our food the server never checked back yet insisted that she did- it was a very tense and uncomfortable dinner. What made it even more surreal was the fact it was a slow night there.
Tucson has many dining choices- leave Gold for the hotel guests.
Understaffed but our server was very good.
Gold is old tired and uninspired. The kitchen is barely going through the motions. The wine list is designed to swallow your wallet, although there are good choices on it the list is definitely a profit center. Examples include a spinach and pecan salad, sans nuts and overly dressed. Roasted chicken sans any spice or accents to make it more appealing than a base for stock. The raviolis must have come from Venice, they were swimming in butter and cream.
The view was great, at sunset you get to appreciate the elevation over the city. The wait staff was helpful as best they could be. With so many good dining locations in Tucson, unless you're a captive at the hotel, this is one to avoid.
Generally good food, service and quiet atmosphere. We visited during a trip to the area. Good food but not a wow factor for the price. If you are staying at the resort, a good choice but I would explore other options if visiting the area for only a short time.
We had a fantastic time. The service was attentive but unobtrusive, and the food was top-notch. We enjoyed ourselves thoroughly and will come back again.
Great View !! Try to get there for sunset. Ask for a table next to the window.
Food and service were great .........They were very accommodating to our special requests.
Pricey, but great for special occasions.
