The Glen Ellen Star in Glen Ellen, California is a culinary experiment in wood fire cooking that highlights the best of California flavors. Established in 2012, Glen Ellen Star focuses all of the attention on seasonal ingredients that create unique dishes. Produce and meats are locally sourced to showcase the best farmers and gardeners of the surrounding region.
Along with traditional cooking methods, Glen Ellen Star uses a wood fired oven to create wonderful dishes. You will want to start with one of the roasted vegetable plates before the main meal. Entres include the rigatoni with matsutake mushrooms and pomegranate chestnuts with pumpkin butter that is melt-in-your-mouth.
Very comfortable, small spot. Great local vibe. Excellent food and stellar service.
Fabulous oven roasted veggies. Very fresh and excellent ingredients.
Glen Ellen Star was amazing, such a cute, comfortable restaurant that we visited during our stay at the nearby Olea Hotel on our honeymoon. The restaurant had a lovely casual ambiance, but had a nice industrial / rustic atmosphere perfect for date night or a special occassion. Our favorites were the vegetables- the charred corn, cotija & lime dish, the brussels sprouts with bacon remoulade, and the pan seared chicken with salsa verde & chick peas. We shared the homemade bourbon maple ice cream that was also excellent!
Absolutely everything we ordered from the menu was fantastic. If the plates were edible we would have gone for those as well. Stellar experience. From ambiance, quality wait staff and excellent food we are now so obsessed with this place and it will be our go to spot. Roasted veggies are to die for and the pastas we recently had were phenomenal. Hands down best Gem in the Sonoma area (and we are locals).
The Glen Ellen Star definitely lives up to its name. I savor every minute when I'm lucky enough to have dinner here as it is a gem. We sat at the chef's bar and watched every dish while we interacted with the chefs. Each dish is meticulously prepared with amazing ingredients. I wanted every vegetable dish on the menu and finally decided on the cauliflower. It was a crown of cauliflower covered with tahini that looked like melted cheese with sliced almonds on top. The texture of the cauliflower was like butter. (Like buttah!) My spouse got the wood roasted calamari with zucchini pesto, pickled ramps, chorizo ribbons (I know!) and squash blossoms. I swear it looked more like a corsage than a dish. And he was smart enough to give me a couple of tastes. For the main, I had the brick chicken with hominy and green chilis and pickled jalapeño. Wowza! Just mention crispy-skinned chicken with a soft, moist center and a little heat of peppers and I'm swooning. The husband has house made farfalle with morel mushrooms, burrata, toasted pine nuts and basil with a hen egg carefully placed on top. Masterpiece!
Fantastic little spot. Roasted veggies are amazing! Don't miss them!
We ordered the brussel sprouts, the special pizza, brick chicken and the ice cream. Everything was delicious, generous portions and the service was efficient and friendly. Booked a reservation on a Friday night but I don't think it was necessary.
My family went to try the neighborhood menu for the first time. The food was amazing, as always! Our server was very nice and not overly attentive. We will definitely be back to try more of the Wednesday night menus!
Very high quality cooking - every bite was yummy. Could have split the entrees, but we had leftovers the next day instead! Will look forward to next time!
We were told how great this place is and kind of missed that. We enjoyed ourselves and dinner, but not the vibe we were looking for.
One of my favorite restaurants, I think they need some more salad choices and good local beer on tap.
The service is great. The food is great . It's a little hot and a little loud. Defiantly would recommend to anyone.
Creative combination of flavors from the freshest ingredients in such an unpretentious place. The best of all, everything we had was delicious from Baby Kale Salad with pickled green strawberries with spicy peanut dressing & vadouvan walnuts to Wood fired Brisket, Nectarine & Arugula Pizza. Unique yet comfort in every bite. Service was casual yet very professional. Wish there was a table with a view of nice creek they had in the back.
We eat out every Saturday in resturants all over Sonoma and Napa County and I will say that we had a fine dinner but I would not claim it to be outstanding like some of the other reviews.
A tad overrated in my opinion. p.s. Forget the homemade bread.
Probably the best meal we have had this year. Simple but elegant. I had that night's special, what the chef called a lobster clambake, which was a bowl with a split small lobster, prawns, clams, crab claws, corn and accoutrements in a splendid, saffron colored cream sauce. My wife was equally happy with her fava bean agnolotti, with burrata, morel mushrooms, and hen egg bottarga. Our starter, grilled carrots with flash fried garbanzos and harisa, was amazing. We were very happy with the food, wine and service. If you're in Sonoma, make a reservation. This is a world class restaurant with great, relaxed small town ambience.
Menu was limited. Wine list also limited although they let us taste first but the choices were not good. We settled for it anyway. The nice thing was that the veggies were good and they brought a cup of ice cream for the birthday boy.
Loved everything that came out of the wood fired oven. Service was excellent and friendly.
I was surprised that the vegetable plates were good but not so good as suggested by reviews. However, the whole fish was spectacular. And the vibe of the place is great.
Wonderful experience at Glen Ellen Star in Glen Ellen.
Walked down from our hotel for the first dinner of a wine weekend in the Sonoma & Napa areas.
Great little restaurant with a very inventive menu, nice beverage selection and exceptional service.
Several of the "Shareable" plates were excellent- don't miss the Brussel Sprouts or the Beets!!
All of our entrees were wonderful- nice portions, well seasoned and interesting flavor combinations.
Excellent service throughout the evening.
The small cups of homemade ice cream at the end of the meal were a very nice touch- just the right amount and really delicious!!
A great find in the area- will definitely visit again!!
Loved this little Glen Ellen gem...Or should I say "star"?! Were in Sonoma for a getaway and as I had read such positive things, booked a res. for dinner. Sat inside and loved the vibe, our server (wish I could remember her name!) and the food was to die for! Went back a second night where we sat on outside patio for something different and felt it had less charm and energy than the main building and our server was fine but not nearly as fun or friendly as night one. Still a great spot to which we would happily return!
We've been trying to book a reservation for awhile. It was worth the wait. The oven roasted vegetables were wonderful. My husband ordered the steak accompanied with an egg. I had the special veal dish with polenta. It was absolutely delicious. Our waiter was attentive and helpful in explaining the menu. The roasted local strawberries with hand crafted ice cream was a perfect end to our meal. The larger dining room is casual and comfortable. It's a lovely wine country restaurant that locals and tourists can enjoy. We definitely will return.
Superb food, always delicious, great vibe, Cher Ari and his team never fail to Impress.
Fantastic dinner and our server Greg made our experience special. Lovely space.
Arrived at the restaurant at 840pm for our 845pm reservation. We were warmly greeted and seated in the 'annex or sunroom' as opposed to the older open kitchen space. The room is lovely with good space between tables. We had the Brussel sprouts, the beets and both chose the steaks as mains. The food was extra ordinary. We brought our own wine. The ambience was great, good energy...one table of six right beside us, was vying for the noisest table award but did not let it impact our experience. The criticism that I would have is that our server was coldly efficient that by the time we left bordered on rude. Service was executed quickly with absolutely no narrative. For example we ordered two different ice creams for dessert which were literally 'plopped' on our table from over my shoulder with no explanation in their sealed lidded cardboard tubs. This might have seemed interesting if we had not noticed our table of six beside us had their ice cream nicely presented on plates. As soon as the ice cream arrived we were asked if we wanted coffee we declined and said we would just enjoy the our glasses of wine. Before we had the 'lids' off our ice cream tubs and with each of us holding on to a glass of wine our bill was presented in the little metal bucket. From the moment we arrived to the moment we left we realized that we had been in the restaurant for just less than 60 minutes!!!!
Fresh sweet pea soup with mint, brick chicken (love the skin), whole fish, brussel sprouts.... Amazing!
Limited menu. The vegetables were very fresh and locally grown. This restaurant came highly recommended, but I thought it not as good that night as reported. I had Saltimbocca...Not that good..
Delicious carrot and cauliflower dishes. House made bread was amazing. Whole cooked fish was probably the best we ever had.
terrible uncomfortable seating, bread made there terrible, way over expensive fish $32 with nothing else not even a sprig of parsley. wine excellent but very over priced. pizza round table quality. all vegs seperate high price loaded with butter and olive oil. what is the big hipe?
Great restaurant! The Brussels sprouts are excellent. The strawberry crumble and house made ice cream is not be be missed!
We were recommended to this restaurant by our kids who visited Sonoma last year. The menu was creative and the food sumptuous. We certainly would recommend it to others. We were there last Tuesday and one of my favorite items was the strawberry dessert. If I could get a copy of the recipe it would be appreciated.
We hope to get back in the future.
We only get to Sonoma Country once a year but we are sure to get to the Glen Ellen Star at least once, if not twice, for dinner. Sitting at the Chef's table is a lot of fun. You get to be a part of the action and watch the mastery that happens within such a small space. The food is always great. The service is outstanding. Even if you are from out of town, everyone in the place makes you feel like you are a part of the quaint neighborhood of Glen Ellen. This will always be a special place for us and one that we hope to stop at for years to come.
Despite rave online reviews, there was little to recommend this restaurant beyond the salad. Our main course -- soft-shelled crabs -- lacked substance and were overly seasoned, barely resembling the original. It was virtually impossible to hear conversations, including new friends we made at the the next table who had the same complaint about the crabs; we ended up sharing appetizers with each other which made for a convivial evening.
If you get the chance to go here, sit in the side room. The noise level is insane in the main restaurant part, but you can have a great conversation in their side building, it's also pretty new looking. Went for a locals night and the food was good and also very fresh, just kind of small portions and nothing to really rave about. The service here is good but our waitress was distracted and we missed out on water refills and there were long waits after we ordered and between courses. It's still worth a try and we will go back in case it was just a bad night.
Extraordinary salad with fresh peas and dried onions. This restaurant really knows how to make you yearn for vegetables!
For our party of 4 there were 3 chicken dish ordered and 1 fish order... All delicious. The vegetable sides were also delicious and very festive, especially the whole baked cauliflower with tahini sauce. For desert it was salted peanut butter ice cream which was also superb. A bit more of a selection in the desert section would have been welcome(there was only ice cream.) A great little neighborhood gem!
First off - the food was excellent, portions were generous. We were seated in what you might call an "annex" - a building built right next to the main restaurant. While I was curious about the "annex", this is why I didn't give a higher rating. It is a small room, and everything is brought over from the main building. The wait staff has no place to just "be in the room" - so service was spotty - driven by them coming into the room specifically for something. Second issue is the room has nothing to muffle noise. Two large parties were seated in the room. While their conversations were normal for a party of that size, the sound soon become too loud - making a conversation at a table for 2 impossible. I will definitely go back, but request to be seated in the main building.
We met with friends on the inside section of the restaurant. It was cozy but comfortable. We ordered several of their veggie dishes which were all very well done. The entres were also well done. It's not super fancy but a nice wine country spot for sure.
Delicious vegetable dishes and rizzoto special was exceptional. Excellent choice and we will be back!
This unassuming restaurant blew us away with their unique approach to food and ingredients!
Great lil place to dine, great staff, great food. The enclosed patio needs some acustic work, a bit noise but inside and at the bar was great. The chefs work like a well oiled machine. Cant wait to go back
We enjoy this restaurant for Wed. "Neighbors Night". Two course prix-fixe meal with free corkage. Delicious, vibrant food in a relaxed, casual setting.
