We have dined at Girasole many times. Since, for us, it was always a five star review, I was alarmed at all the one star reviews on Open Table, but decided to give them another try. It's so convenient and good. We had to be at the Academy of Music before 7:25p. The food is still wonderful. The service not so much. It's not that the service is bad. There are just not enough servers. I saw a bartender, a bus boy and a waiter and the place was packed. We waited for a long time for drinks and bread. Dinner was great if somewhat late.However, everything took so long that we didn't have time for coffee or dessert. We eventually puts our coats on and stood to get the check. I understand everything is cooked when ordered. All that is good. Get some more wait staff and the greater part of the problems would be solved.
Girasole was a great date night restaurant! With their authentic and traditional Italian cuisine, their hospitality, and cozy atmosphere it definitely made me feel like I was in Italy! Not only that, but the food was amazing! Every bite made gave me the feeling of home and my grandmothers cooking. The staff also were very friendly and were constantly making sure we were pleased and satisfied with everything. I definitely would recommend it.
Don't bother. I made a reservation for my boyfriend and I to eat here for my birthday. We arrived 10 minutes early. When we walked in there was no hostess/host or seating area, just a bartender and a crowded bar. She asked if we had a reservation and for how many. She told us it would be a bit of a wait for a table and to have a seat at the bar (there were no empty seats). We thought, "okay, we're a little early. Maybe they aren't quite ready for us yet." So we stood by the door and waited. And waited. And waited some more. After 45 minutes of waiting and not even being acknowledged by the staff, a larger group got up to leave. A woman from the group said to us that they'd been there for 2 hours and never got their food. We took that as the last straw and walked out. We called anther restaurant and had a wonderful experience there. Again, do not waste your time at Girasole.
We had a 7 p.m. reservation and 8:30 theatre curtain. We didn't get seated until 8 p.m. and eventually had to basically almost trip someone to get an order of some food. Not until seconds before we got our pasta order was bread delivered to the table and this was after they said they couldn't get us any food as there wasn't time. If they were having a problem they should have informed us when we arrived that they were short staffed or whatever else the problem was giving us the opportunity to make other arrangements. People seated before us were still waiting for their meals when we left. I will neither recommend the place nor ever return.
Arrived at 6:15, ordered at 6:45, food arrived at 8:30. Ok, a long wait on a packed Saturday night is understandable. BUT THEY ONLY TOOK ONE DRINK ORDER while we waited. Awful, slow, service and I would not go back. The rest of my 10 person party felt the same.
A complete disaster from start to finish. Made reservations for a pre-concert meal as the restaurant is adjacent to all Philadelphia theaters. For our 6 pm reservation, they didn't take our order until 6:40 pm and then told us we wouldn't have time. When the food came at 7:20 pm, it was almost ineatible. The bill was $197 and we may as well have lit two hundred dollar bills on fire. (The table of ten next to us left with NO food served at all!) Skip it. They shouldn't be in business.
We've dined at Girasole several times, and always enjoyed the food in the past. During Restaurant Week, it has been a particular good deal. However, the service has been steadily declining, as the noise level has been rising and the food quality dropping. Our most recent meal was actually unpleasant. We had difficulty getting the hostess' attention to get seated, then waited 35 minutes for someone to take our order. (The excuse was that they had lots of patrons who needed to be out in time for the orchestra. Um . . . what??) We actually began to look for alternate restaurants on Open Table, and were prepared to walk out. I walked up to the hostess to tell her that this was their last chance, and she personally came to take our order. Things did not get better once our order was in -- dishes came out willy-nilly, with one or two dishes being served while the rest of us sat with no food. Most of the food was acceptable but not memorable, although by this time we were not in any mood to enjoy it much. After the orchestra crowd left, there were very few tables, and we STILL had difficulty getting water glasses filled or placing an order for coffee. The waitress offered black or green tea, but could find only Lipton regular or decaf. The decaf coffee was undrinkable, and we all left it. When asked if the cheesecake was cream cheese or ricotta, he waitress said cream cheese; it was ricotta. The apple tart was so tasteless I left it after one bite. Without a vestibule, the restaurant was freezing whenever anyone opened the door to enter or leave. We will not be going back there.
This restaurant was awful from the start to the finish. Walking in with my boyfriend, the lead waiter/manager/owner (??) was rude and pushy. We went for restaurant week so it's a set menu for a set price. The online menu showed four courses for rest. week. The first salad, the second an app, the third a main course, and fourth dessert. Well on the in-person menu all that was listed was three courses - completely getting rid of the salad. I brought this to our waiter/owner and he was extremely off putting about it and told me that I was wrong. I showed him my phone where the online menu was displaying and then he finally came around and let us have these mini salads. We both ordered yellowtail carpaccio - it was fine. The menu listed it would be with sun dried tomatoes and olives. Well there were plenty of rock hard tomatoes but maybe two mini olives on each of our plates. As for our main course we both got the balsamic and leek salmon. I will say, the flavors of this dish were SO GOOD. However, that all went down hill when I found a curly black hair under my fillet. Actually another waiter saw me discover it and was so embarrassed. My waiter did not come over to discuss the matter until they brought my replacement dish out. (Mind you there was NO ONE else in the entire restaurant other than two single guys drinking at the bar.) My waiter/the owner didn't apologize which was really rude. Then the dessert came out warm, tasteless, and frankly gross. We told our waiter our feelings and he said, "well no one else complained tonight." Literally the worst customer service I've ever experienced in a restaurant. $70+ for a terrible dinner.
Food was superb. Service was friendly but slow and rushed when at table. Noise level too much!!! We were seated next to very large party. Lovely 2 ladies on other side of us who felt the same regarding service and one was in restaurant business herself. Decor was not to my liking but my BFF liked it. We did both have a super glass of Chianti. For a by the glass wine, it was excellent.
For my Restaurant Week, I ordered the chicken entrée, which tasted like a bland over-flattened, over-fried chicken tender with no sauce. After a few flavorless bites, I figured I would take it home and reheat it in some sauce to make it edible. When the bill came I saw they gave me a veal entrée. I DO NOT eat veal. Before ordering, I spoke to a waiter about how I was having trouble choosing between the salmon entrée and the chicken. The waiter advised the chicken! I feel awful sharing this because the servers were exceptionally kind (despite the mistake) and the décor is stylish and cozy (even if the place was empty), but we were disappointed with each course and frustrated we wasted a night of Restaurant Week here. I hope they improve the menu because the place looks like it could have potential!
We were there for New Years eve, and I am hoping they were just under staffed that night because it took 30 minutes from sitting down to get a waiter and drink. I had to go to the bar to see what was going on. Things were a little better after that. The food was really good, although portions were small and no bread was provided without again, us asking. Also the arrangement was odd with plastic and folding chairs. Odd night.
NYE gathering. Very good food presented well in an intimate dining room. We had 9 for dinner and everything seemed to come out right. Good wine list. Very Solid menu but way to noisy. Tough to carry on conversations. Except the noise level it was a great experience.
Service was terrible. We had a 5:30 reservation with a 7pm concert. We arrived on time, our order wasn't taken right away. We waited 45 min for pasta entrees. At 5:25, asked the waiter about our dinner because we were going to a concert. He came back and said it would be right out. After asking a second time, it finally came. By that time we had to inhale our food! No apology was given.
Our reservation was for 5 and they sat us at 2 differently shaped tables pushed together. Given the awkward set up and the loud noise level, we had a difficult time talking as a group. The food was very good but the service was poor. Used to love this restaurant in its prior location. Was disappointed this time round.
I hadn't been to Girasole in a while and was pleasantly surprised at how delicious it was. The eggplant appetizer could have been a bit warmer but was tasty. The pasta preparations were delicious and the server was kind enough to split the meal so that my friend and I could savor both dishes. The house wine was good and the lemon ricottacheese cake for desert was light and absolutely delectable.
Why did I know about this delectable Italian eatery before? Conveniently located to the Kimmel Center and several theaters, I can see this will be my go to place often. For starters, my friend had the carpaccio and I had the light and flavorful eggplant Parmesan, which my friend had for her entrée. I had the delicious orecchiette with broccoli rabe and Italian sausage. We both enjoyed the cheesecake for dessert -- again so light I could have eaten two!
Overall, we had a pleasant experience. Our food was a little slow and my meal was accidentally given to someone else, so everyone was done by the time I got mine. The waiter didn't take responsibility for it, instead blamed it on my friend. Besides that, it was pretty ok. I would go back.
For starters, I am not a vindictive person. I usually give everyone the benefit of the doubt. In the case of Girasole I freely concede that the food is awesome. Regrettably, that's where it ends. The nice folks at Girasole need to take remedial restaurant operating lessons. #1 on the list should be customer service. The repeated lack of attention coupled with exaggerated efforts to pretend that they didn't notice their deficiencies boggles my mind. Countless times wait staff brisked past our table ignoring closed menus and subsequently, empty glasses. What self-respecting restauranteur would miss a chance to sell a glass of wine and refill an empty glass? Begging for bread is also not my favorite way to start dinner. Lastly, making diners feel welcome is basic restaurant etiquette. Failing at this is inexcusable. I sincerely hope that the good folks at Girasole read this review and resolve to train their wait staff properly. If their service ever matches the work of their kitchen they could be a 4 to 5 star eatery.
