About Giovanni's Trattu
Giovanni's Trattu may be the only restaurant in DC to capture the feel of Venice. Formerly known as Trattu, this cozy little restaurant provides the lighter cuisine of Northern Italy, which is known for its unique flavor. The extensive menu changes every fall, winter and summer. Seating 60 in the main dining room, Giovanni's Trattu is candlelight at night and it entertains guests with live music from a guitarist/singer who roams from table to table, providing the perfect sound for any occasion. Highlighting the ambiance is a collection of colorful pottery and venetian masks that hangs from the walls. While Giovanni's Trattu is ideal for private parties, guests who seek a more intimate experience may sit at one of two tables in the small out door garden.

Giovanni's Trattu Ratings and Reviews
Bright, cozy, authentic traditional Italian neighborhood restaurant in a small space. High caliber service and good food. Tables are very close to one another, so don't plan on private conversation. We had the gnocchi and the fresh ravioli; both were excellent. The menu seems unlimited and covers all traditional fare. Service was very attentive and friendly. Prices were a little high but otherwise family-friendly. Great location two short blocks south of DuPont Circle.
In all the years I’ve lived in DC, I never knew this restaurant existed, tucked away on a small street off Connecticut Avenue between Dupont Circle and Farragut. We were meeting an old friend for dinner and looking for a quiet spot. Giovanni’s Trattu filled the bill, a sweet Italian neighborhood restaurant that looks like a throwback to another era, homey and European with a touch of festivity. The service was welcoming and the food was good. I especially liked the spinach that accompanied my veal marsala, and our friend enjoyed the agnolotti with mushrooms. The food won’t set the world on fire, but the overall experience was very congenial.
The waitress we had was very helpful and so knowledgeable about both entree and wine options. The food is delectable.
We haven’t been here in many years and were quite pleased to discover this gem still cooking up great fare in the same enticing hide-away. Love it.
Could not have not had a better dinner or experience. The food was fantastic. Service was prompt but never intrusive. Always friendly. Perfect environment for sharing good wine, good food and great conversation with friends. Will definitely go back next time in D.C.
We had a great time dining here. The hostess was remarkably welcoming, the food very good, service timing but not rushed. They made us feel special without hovering over us. Thoroughly enjoyable and would recommend for those who desire a quiet, peaceful meal with good food.
Our anniversary date here was perfect. The staff was incredibly sweet and accommodating, and the food was heavenly. It's a quiet, cozy and intimate spot with a huge variety of authentic Italian dishes and desserts. It just might become our anniversary spot every year.
What a find! From the moment we drove up to the quaint front door, we knew we had chosen the right spot. We were looking for food that was great but not "over cheffed" (I just made that phrase up!). Service, food, ambiance all were excellent. If you are looking for small, intimate and authentic this is a great choice.
Business dinner originally scheduled for 10 grew to 12, and restaurant was gracious enough to hold table for 4 just in case it grew again. Food was reasonably priced and fairly good. Service seemed to drop off toward the end but maybe they were simply giving us space. Will definitwly keep in mind for next time.
Great retaurant for an intimate date with fantastic food and excellent service. The restaurant is small - only about 15 tables, but that made the experience even better. The wait staff was very attentive and we no longer felt like we were in the middle of a busy city. The salmon had a delicious sauce and was cooked perfectly. Highly recommended for date nights, special occasions or just a quiet dinner away from the hustle of the nation's capital.
Giovanni's provides an authentic, unpretentious European experience that is increasingly hard to find here: fresh, delicious, well-prepared Italian food in an attractive, quiet and cozy space. The service is friendly and professional. My friends and I (discerning diners all) have eaten here three times, and we all agree on its virtues. Yet each time, we have all had the same complaint: the bathrooms are disgusting! They smell hideous. I personally will not go back to Giovanni's until they fix this obvious problem. It's a shame, because I otherwise love this restaurant.
Our first trip to Giovanni's Trattu proved to be magical. The dining room is quaint and romantic, classic "Italian" restaurant with pictures of celebrity diners on the wall. We sat at the front table overlooking the street-side garden, which was just marvelous. Wait staff was friendly and professional, attending to our needs with being obtrusive. Our eleven-year-old son was smitten... The food was spectacular with all homemade dishes. The gnocchi was pillowy soft in a flavorful vodka-sauce. The Veal Marsala was sublime with tender scallopine in a creamy, Marsala sauce. The Bucatini with Meatballs was perfect, with a hearty ragu and moist, juicy meatballs. The wine, a Valpolicella Ripasso was perfect with the meal and moderately priced. Dessert was excellent, along with Espresso and Grappa made for a perfect conclusion. If we are back in DC, we will be sure to stop in and enjoy another dinner at Giovanni's Trattu!
The food is remarkably prepared, lovingly presented and simply delicious. The ambiance is beautiful; my guest remarked that she felt transported to Europe. Our request for a table conducive to a private conversation was honored magnificently. We felt privileged. Thank you.
You will not enjoy the best meal ever, that's not what Giovanni's Trattu is all about. It is a true neighborhood restaurant, a special place smack in the middle of downtown DC. The food is tasty and varied, well-priced with ample portions. The staff is attentive and helpful. Even when every table is filled you can still hear your dinner companion's conversation. What's not to love.
