About Giovanni's Trattu

Giovanni's Trattu may be the only restaurant in DC to capture the feel of Venice. Formerly known as Trattu, this cozy little restaurant provides the lighter cuisine of Northern Italy, which is known for its unique flavor. The extensive menu changes every fall, winter and summer. Seating 60 in the main dining room, Giovanni's Trattu is candlelight at night and it entertains guests with live music from a guitarist/singer who roams from table to table, providing the perfect sound for any occasion. Highlighting the ambiance is a collection of colorful pottery and venetian masks that hangs from the walls. While Giovanni's Trattu is ideal for private parties, guests who seek a more intimate experience may sit at one of two tables in the small out door garden.

It was a birthday dinner. Everything about Giovanni’s Trattu is fantastic. The owners are often there and greet diners and make sure all is to their pleasing. It’s a hidden gem in DC.

Food was good, not great but maybe depended on what you ordered. Service was very good. We just went for a quick, early dinner as had other plans for the night so didn't linger to enjoy dessert.

The waitress we had was very helpful and so knowledgeable about both entree and wine options. The food is delectable.
We haven’t been here in many years and were quite pleased to discover this gem still cooking up great fare in the same enticing hide-away. Love it.

My wife's gnocchi was very good. My linguine with mixed seafood was bland and the shrimp was tough. The waitress did comp us the wine when I commented to her about my dish and I appreciated that.

We had a great time dining here. The hostess was remarkably welcoming, the food very good, service timing but not rushed. They made us feel special without hovering over us. Thoroughly enjoyable and would recommend for those who desire a quiet, peaceful meal with good food.

Our anniversary date here was perfect. The staff was incredibly sweet and accommodating, and the food was heavenly. It's a quiet, cozy and intimate spot with a huge variety of authentic Italian dishes and desserts. It just might become our anniversary spot every year.

What a find! From the moment we drove up to the quaint front door, we knew we had chosen the right spot. We were looking for food that was great but not "over cheffed" (I just made that phrase up!). Service, food, ambiance all were excellent. If you are looking for small, intimate and authentic this is a great choice.

Business dinner originally scheduled for 10 grew to 12, and restaurant was gracious enough to hold table for 4 just in case it grew again. Food was reasonably priced and fairly good. Service seemed to drop off toward the end but maybe they were simply giving us space. Will definitwly keep in mind for next time.

Great retaurant for an intimate date with fantastic food and excellent service. The restaurant is small - only about 15 tables, but that made the experience even better. The wait staff was very attentive and we no longer felt like we were in the middle of a busy city. The salmon had a delicious sauce and was cooked perfectly. Highly recommended for date nights, special occasions or just a quiet dinner away from the hustle of the nation's capital.

Started with the cold cuts appetizer and then had the sausage with rigatoni. Both were very tasty. Tried the Baba au Rhum for dessert and didn't care for it. Service was prompt and friendly.

Giovanni's provides an authentic, unpretentious European experience that is increasingly hard to find here: fresh, delicious, well-prepared Italian food in an attractive, quiet and cozy space. The service is friendly and professional. My friends and I (discerning diners all) have eaten here three times, and we all agree on its virtues. Yet each time, we have all had the same complaint: the bathrooms are disgusting! They smell hideous. I personally will not go back to Giovanni's until they fix this obvious problem. It's a shame, because I otherwise love this restaurant.

Our first trip to Giovanni's Trattu proved to be magical. The dining room is quaint and romantic, classic "Italian" restaurant with pictures of celebrity diners on the wall. We sat at the front table overlooking the street-side garden, which was just marvelous. Wait staff was friendly and professional, attending to our needs with being obtrusive. Our eleven-year-old son was smitten... The food was spectacular with all homemade dishes. The gnocchi was pillowy soft in a flavorful vodka-sauce. The Veal Marsala was sublime with tender scallopine in a creamy, Marsala sauce. The Bucatini with Meatballs was perfect, with a hearty ragu and moist, juicy meatballs. The wine, a Valpolicella Ripasso was perfect with the meal and moderately priced. Dessert was excellent, along with Espresso and Grappa made for a perfect conclusion. If we are back in DC, we will be sure to stop in and enjoy another dinner at Giovanni's Trattu!

You will not enjoy the best meal ever, that's not what Giovanni's Trattu is all about. It is a true neighborhood restaurant, a special place smack in the middle of downtown DC. The food is tasty and varied, well-priced with ample portions. The staff is attentive and helpful. Even when every table is filled you can still hear your dinner companion's conversation. What's not to love.

I love good food, good service and affordable prices for business lunches. I keep coming back. I particularly like the fact that this is not an authentic Italian Restaurant but an authentic VENETIAN restaurant. My most recent guest, who spends a lot of time in Northern Italy said he felt the authentic atmosphere as he walked in.

So, we literally found this restaurant because of Open Table. It's in a tucked away basement on a little side street. Still, if you're really craving Italian, this may work for you. Overall, the food was decent, but maybe a touch bland. I like a little spicier, bolder sauce on my pasta. We had pesto on one and a red sauce on the other. Both needed "something". We settled for salt and (not fresh ground) pepper. The one bright spot in the meal was the chicken accompanying the pasta. It was very nice; well seasoned and tasty. Desserts were ok (tiramisu and canole). Personally, I like my lady fingers rum soaked. Their tiramisu had none. Thus it was a bit dry. The canole didn't have rum either, but it's not supposed to, right?

The ambiance was nice, but a little loud. The acoustics seem to make voices amplify. There was also an odd odor when we arrived. It was pretty funky, but light enough and we were hungry enough that we got used to it.

So, like I said above, if need Italian, it may be your place.
