Giovanni Rana Pastificio & Cucina Ratings and Reviews
Have to be honest here, after all the hype I️ was pretty disappointed. Drinks were really weak, food was on the salty side and service made us feel like they forgot about us a few times during the night. Probably won’t be returning unless I’m invited to another pasta making event (those are fun, though!)
I am from Canada and was looking online for a place to reserve a table for my friends and family to share a meal following my art exhibition opening in Manhattan. As it turns out, I could not have chosen any wiser!! The food and service exceeded all expectations! Thank you Giovanna Rana!! I cannot imagine returning to NYC and not coming back for a meal.
This is a fun-atmosphere kinda place. The food is good but I wouldn't rave about it. Four of us shared a salad and prosciutto/ parmigiano fritters. Both were good. We all shared four pastas and they were pretty good but again, not raving. I would recommend this place for a very casual dinner especially if you are craving pasta like we all were! Our server was very nice.
My husband and I went for his birthday dinner. Admittedly, Italian isn't my first choice for an evening out, however I greatly enjoyed this meal. We had the pasta sampler, 3, it was plenty of food! The food was fantastic, cooked perfectly. We greatly enjoyed the bread, and the drinks as well. Our only complaint is that the servers were not as attentive as we would have liked. We felt like we had to flag everyone down when we needed something.
I come here fairly regularly because of the delicious pasta! This time I got a new one which isn't as good as their other pastas but I always like trying when they have something new on the menu. Definitely this is a must try for pasta (i would do the tasting). It can be really loud sitting outside here during the day but I love that they have a patio
This was my fourth of fifth time at Giovanni Rana and I would say this was the first time I got disappointed. The service and the ambience were very nice, the place wasn't so noisy as it can be sometimes. The negatives points were the size of the dishes - which are clearly smaller comparing to my visit last year -, and also the quality of some of the plates we've order. They have a famous parmesan basket that came, this time, not only smaller but also hard and tough to break and to eat. A parmesan basket is supposed to be crispy and not hard as it was. My mother, who absolutely LOVE this parmesan basket, simply couldn't eat it. The pasta inside the basket was ok, good, but the parmesan crust itself was really below our expectations (comparing to what we have already tasted at Rana, in other opportunities).
Service was poor- was told could pick any 3 pastas for tasting-- and then was served 3 courses of ravioli in different sauces - had to take home a course as was sick of ravioli after the second course had to grab attention of server several times for simple things- no fork and knife on table etc
Although ravioli quality was very good the whole experience was not for my guests and my wife and me
Meh. Could've been very good, I think we had the Sunday night "B team". Our waitress didn't know anything about the charcuterie offerings - was beyond uninformed. At one point we described to her what they probably had and what it would be based on the name of the offerings. Really unenthusiastic, and didn't even pretend to understand the fare.
Drinks were very good, albeit expensive and mostly ice. Pasta was great, desserts ok. Husband ordered a whisky ice cream dish which ended up just being vanilla ice cream for $$$$.
Was recommended by a local "in the know" - I can only assume it's better on peak nights. On a Sunday, horrible value all around.
What a great meal! This was my first time at this restaurant. Their wine list was excellent and had a good range of prices. Their watermelon and tomatoes salad was the best thing I've ever eaten. Their pasta really was al dente and extremely delicious. I can't wait to go back.
Delicious pasta I had Apple Fennel & Pork Sausage Ravioli my wife had Sicilian Tuna Pasta both very good as was the Kale Apple Walnut salad and gnocchi small dish. Service was very attentive, sommelier recommended a nice wine to pair with our meal. The place is jumping on weekends and bit noisy but we definitely enjoyed it.
Booked this place based on reviews - didn't disappoint! Atmosphere was exactly what we hoped for - friendly, casual, rustic, lively. Menu was fabulous & catered nicely to our vegetarian guest. Service was a little slow but our waitress was so lovely & knowledgeable that we still tipped well & left happy. Highly recommend & certainly will be returning - a new favorite!
Food was fine. Not the greatest presentation or execution for $$$. Waitstaff were overwhelmed and flustered and rushing while it wasn't particularly busy. Asked two of us which wine we wanted to drink, and the second I finished my sentence he already ran away to get it without listening to my gf's drink order. Then had to take that separately.
Desserts were nice.
