About Gioco

Gioco pioneered the retail development of the South Loop when it opened in September of 1999. The restaurant has been a mainstay in the neighborhood as other restaurants and stores have opened up over the years. Gioco is located in an historic building built in 1890 and is one of the few remaining buildings in Chicago from that era. The Gioco space features the original old brick and plaster walls, an old wooden walk-in cooler and a walk-in safe built into the wall, used by the Chicago gangsters (Al Capone, Frank Nitti, George "Bugs" Moran and Earl "Hymie" Weiss ) for one of the gambling and/or brothel houses that dominated the area in the early 1900s. Designer Jerry Kleiner designed Gioco restaurant to retain these old world elements and to feature them in his modernization of the space. Cuisine: Gioco's menu offers rustic Italian dishes prepared with the finest available seasonal products. The menu features homemade pastas and wood-fired thin crust pizzas.

This place continues to impress me. The food is fantastic, the staff is excellent, and the atmosphere is cozy and elegant but not pretentious. The wine is great and the menue is small enoigh that they can focus in quality dished but big enough that tou get good selection. This is by far my new favorite place! Neighborhoid gem!

I absolutely adore Gioco!! A true neighborhood gem with all the charm and ambience I could want. Authentic, delicious food and great wines. Our waiter was very helpful and attentive. Since moving into the neighborhood over a year ago, I have heard rumors that this lovely spot might close down and I pray that it is only a rumor!! Please do not go -- stick around and soon our nabe will be so booming that you will be turning people away. LOVE LOVE LOVE!!!!

Gioco is the best kept secret in the South Loop. Excellent variety of delicious menu options and perfectly prepared. Service is outstanding. We eat there every week and it is always a special treat. Give it a try. You won’t be sorry!

Gioco very rarely disappoints but doesn't "wow" either. We love that it is a neighborhood gem but we would like for the menu to be expanded beyond the current offering. We always have to ask for bread and we suggest that a small salad should be included in light of the entree and pasta prices (especially for pasta dishes). My other beef with Gioco is the tiny olives they use for martinis...you need a magnifying glass to see them (and they offer little taste).

This restaurant is consistently very good. The wait staff are very nice and attentive. I go regularly with my daughter a college student and they recognize us and always greet us warmly.

They refer to it as "from the Berkeley" I have no idea what that means, but it's an assortment of meats and cheeses. It is awesome! Parking is just a few doors down for $10, valet on the weekends.

Probably below average in cost for loop restaurants.

I was at this restaurant about a year ago and thought the lamb chops were the best I had ever eaten......Went there again last Saturday, and they still are the best lamb chops I have ever eaten. Although it is a little pricey, well worth it. Delicious

Gioco is my go to neighborhood spot for fine dining, warm and inviting atmosphere, and great service, food and wine. Kudos to Christian who has waited on us several times and is a real professional with a delightful, helpful personality. I bring both friends and business acquaintances here, and it is always a hit!

I go to Gioco with some regularity, although I had not been there in a while. It was not only excellent as it has been in the past, but it is actually getting better. Relaxed, excellent, comfortable yet gracious. I definitely highly recommend.

I was very disappointed with our meal. I have been to Gioco’s before and enjoyed it. However, this last visit changed my mind. My date liked his steak. I ordered the risotto special ( it had small chunks of fillet ) and I was very disappointed. The risotto was tasteless. Plus, it was so noisy that my date and I had a hard time hearing each other. But the service was impeccable! There are so many other good Italian restaurants in Chicago — I will not be back.

This was an excellent new find! I was looking in the neighborhood as we had massages at Versailles...also excellent..so I wanted to park once and not worry. The waiter was smart and knew how to steer us in the right direction and the kitchen split all the dishes we got so we could really enjoy a variety. All dishes were great...beet salad with a variety of beets, mushroom and spinach appetizer..hello garlic! We split 2 entrees..the divine risotto of the day and the grilled chop that melted like a filet. Very attentive staff...except no bday treat...but we ordered a dessert and it was great. I can't wait to take more folks here. Loved it!

We have been going to Gioco for six years now and it is as good as ever. Truly well prepared, very fresh, consistently delicious pastas, fish, veal. Fabulous burratta and ripe tomato appetizer, crusty fresh bread with delicious garlic infused olive oil. The service is second to none with professional wait staff.
And incredible warm, charming, turn of the century Chicago atmosphere.
A favorite of ours!

Great spot for a date night or a special group gathering. The ambience is warm and welcoming especially on a chilly Chicago night. Great wine and pasta and even better service. The place has a ton of history to it from prohibition era Chicago I only wish the people working there knew more about it. Definitely reccomend!

Our server was friendly and initially attentive but there were long waits between delivering drinks and returning to take our orders, and between dropping off dessert menus and returning. This waiting is typical of Gioco. Whether it's a bug or feature depends on how much you like to linger. Food was great as always.

Good food/wine but too pricey. The food was good but some things we expected were missing. For example no balsamic or any type of vinaigrette was used on the caprese salad and no dipping sauce for the calamari. Overall, the prices were too high but it's Chicago and we don't go downtown that often. Unfortunately, next time we go downtown it probably won't be there.

We went to Gioco for the second time in about 10 years. The food was very good. We had grilled squid for appetizer, I had scaloppine alla saltimbocca, my husband had orecchiette, and the kids had pizza. We also had dessert. The light was uneven on our table, a little bit too dark for me and I could not see my food too well. The kids had a good time writing on the paper table cloth. Overall it is a very nice and cozy restaurant, but I was hoping that it was more authentic Italian. Major mistakes in the menus should be fixed.

Hadn't been here in several years. The quality of the food has regressed--our entrees were properly cooked but bland. Our server neglected to review the specials before attempting to take our orders. I had to ask. For the price, food and service should have been far better than it was. There are many Italian restaurants in Chicago with similar price points. At this point, Gioco cannot compete.
