About Ginko Japanese Restaurant
Owner Shigeo Kimura founded Ginko Japanese restaurant in 1982. Over the past 25 years Ginko has evolved to bring the finest Japan has to offer the Toronto area. The name Ginko is derived from the word "Gingko" an ancient oriental tree. The tree flourishes in season to produce a yellow fruit and unique, fan-shaped leaves, which turn a beautiful golden color in the fall. Held in high esteem by the Japanese as a symbol of prosperity, the "Gingko" tree only begins to grow it"s golden seeds on it's 20th year of maturity. The journey of the "Gingko" tree and Ginko are one in the same, a continual evolution of expression of nutritious, healthy and tasty food. Located inside DoubleTree Hotel near the airport, our staff strives to bring you, our guest, a traditional and modern Japanese cuisine that is sure to enlighten all taste buds.

Ginko Japanese Restaurant Ratings and Reviews
Noted to be founded 25 years ago and with a good reputation for Japanese food within the community, this quiet restaurant sits off of the lobby in the Delta Hotel on the Toronto Airport restaurant strip. The ambiance is quiet with central tables, booths and tatami rooms available for different experiences. The menu features a five course omakase dinner as well as a set dinner for more than six people, but also notes the need for 48-hour advanced notice. The izakaya appetizer dishes feature small tapas like plates of samplers - two orders of each were required for our party of six. The cooked entrees of salmon, beef and chicken were standard fare for most Japanese restaurants and were serviceable, but not outstanding. The sushi is the highlight with a variety of options as well as fresh cuts of tuna and salmon that provided melt-in-your-mouth sensation more seen at West Coast restaurants. Dessert featured a green tea ice cream parfait that featured a Frosted Flakes base which provided a unique blend of flavours. The serving staff was efficient and extremely pleasant. Overall, it was a pleasant night out with familiar foods made in classical Japanese fashion.
It's funny how they only give you one mushroom cut into 4 on an entree, that's a big stingy!
When asked about the yelp checkin special which was a free green tea (valued at $1 according to the menu) they refused to honour it! It's green tea!
How stingy can you be?
The first impressions are very important. The host who sit us at a table was not pleasant. He was not very pleasant to a gentleman who was in front of us. When we told him that we had a reservation, without checking the name, acknowledging us or confirming the number of people, he just walked over to the table. For a minute, we were all confused if he meant for us to follow him, which he did. The server was very friendly and attentive. For a restaurant at a hotel, the food was decently priced and nicely presented. The food tasted good but I found a light brown hair in my rice bowl. I didn't want to alarm my colleagues so I took it out of my bowl quietly without making a scene. Being an authentic Japanese restaurant located at a hotel, I expected a higher standard, which was not met.
Ginko is everything we want in a restaurant. From the moment you walk in, to the moment you leave, you are treated like family. Quintin is a hard worker and makes sure the ship is sailing straight! Noma-san makes magic happen with the food! Everyone else is friendly and prompt.
This place doesn't just put other restaurants to shame, it is literally on a completely different level. I do not compare Ginko to other sushi restaurants. If they are wise, they won't try to compete with Ginko. They are not just the best in Cleveland, but the continent.
I've been going to Ginko for a very long time and the food is never disappointing. Fresh veggies, fish and perfect soup, rice and salad. It beats all other in The GTA! And for that matter better than the places I've been to while living in every corner of the US. People are beautiful and owner a big Japanese teddy bear! We love it and will go there every time back home!
I have dined there several times. The food and service has always been excellent. One of the best if not the best Japanese restaurant in Toronto. They have three private booths, two with seating for four and one larger room seats eight easily. Also they have two Teppanyaki tables.
I live an hour outside of Toronto, but make the drive several times a year to dine at Ginko's.
Found it to be a very quite restaurant with 80% of table empty although it was 7:30 pm. I soon realized that it was a fairly high priced restaurant based on quality of food served (I ordered a bento box with sushi, sashimi, and tempura) and some sake. Not sure if I will go back again.
We brought a group to Ginko's expecting Tepanyaki tables. We were rudely told "No, our reservation didn't specify that". That tone alone made me want to leave, but as we had been unsuccessful at every other local restaurant trying to secure a reservation that night and they were the only one that wasn't booked solid, what could we do? And really they cannot accommodate our group size at their 2 Tepanyaki tables. The food was okay. The sushi very fishy smelling. The waiter was rude & condescending to my boss who was explaining different types of sushi & what miso soup was to our customers, embarrassing him in front of them. I'll never go back, nor recommend.
We used to go to Ginko quite frequently and loved it, but hadn't been there for a few months. Went back last week and had a terrible experience. There seems to be a change in management. Not sure if Kimura san is still involved. The menu has become much smaller. Now, there is not too much to choose if you don't eat sushi. We love sushi, but we sometimes like to take guests who want other japanese items. Now can't really do it anymore. They also raised the price a little, but that's ok. The service was just terrible. First, 5 minutes after we chose our items for the super deluxe, the server came back to tell us that that they won't serve Botan ebi as part of the super deluxe as they paid too much for it. We said ok and chose some other (much cheaper) fish. Then, after more than half an hour, she came to tell us that they had no uni any more. We had to haggle quite a bit to get a decent replacement for that. Then, they screwed up the order slightly and took our sushi back. Moreover, we could overhear the servers speaking in Japanese and telling each other that we want something of the same price range as a replacement for our uni, and they used a pretty derogatory tone for that (probably didn't realize we could hear them). Overall, it was a disaster. At the end of the meal, one of chefs, who seems to be part of the management came out and apologized. While he said he will get back to me about the service within a week, he never did. We used to recommend this place to others. Now I'd suggest people to find a replacement. At least we have to find one. Ginko has totally gone down hill. Hopefully, they will come back. But, I doubt it.
This is an authentic Japanese restaurant that offers dishes that are fresh, artistically presented, and taste delicious. Particularly impressed by the home made soy sauce and the sushi and sashimi combinations. Flavours are not cluttered by odd pairings and ingredients you might find at other restaurants. Would come again for the same, but also for teppanyaki, which looks like a lot of fun!
Although, I haven't eaten here for 30 years. The food reflects the great quality and care in preparation and the overall taste of each dish. I started with the yakitori--scrumptious-- followed by the entreé, the tempura dinner, which was crispy and colourful--loved the purple yam. It tasted so good you didn't need the accompanying dip. The mousse was a light touch for dessert, especially the cream cheese flavour. I loved that the Owner, Mr. Kimura, walked around the dining room and talked with his patrons. Ginko is well worth a visit for any occasion and I highly recommend it.
Fast and courteous service, didn't go the extra mile to create friendly warm atmosphere. The ambiance was good. Restaurant wasn't very crowded; middle of the week.
Food was okay; not outstanding.
Was looking for a different dining experience to enjoy a birthday girlfriend lunch...this was just average.
Ginko was a very nice Japanese restaurant, divdiing it's emphasis between sushi/sashimi and a teppanaki table. That said, the service was attentive the fish was fresh and the atmosphere was relaxing. We would recommend this to our friends and would try it again oursleves when we find ourselves craving sushi on the airport strip
I took three business associates to Ginko's because they offered Shabu Shabu. It was very fresh and delicious, but we also tried their Sushi and Sashimi and they are not just bragging when they say they have the best in Toronto, it was superb! We had a booth that added a sense of privacy to our dinning and the service was always prompt and polite. Two of my guests said they will come back with bring their spouses, it was that good.
We went here for my husband's birthday and because it was a Sunday evening we happened to be the only ones in the whole restaurant !! This would have normally been a red herring however it was awesome as the service was still stellar. The waitress and the teppanyaki chef added to the authentic experience !! My children were absolutely excited and thrilled by the experience and they even surprised my husband with a slice of cheesecake.
