Gertrude's - Phoenix Ratings and Reviews
I’ve been here several times for dinner, but this is the first time for lunch. I’ve always loved the place. My opinion is the same. Great food, service and a great a patio as there is. A great place to eat, whether going to the garden or not. Highly recommended.
Gertrude’s is one of my favorite reataurants in town and I’ve been to pretty much every restaurant in the area. The outdoor patio right by the cacti garden is so peaceful and beautiful!! The only noise we had was the water fountain by us and birds on a tree. The food is excellent and yhey have a wide variety of choices. The beverages and their wine selection is also good. Our server was very diligent and very assertive with the suggestions. I recommend Gettrude’s as a good place to enjoy a meal and have a good conversation since the noise level is just perfect! It’s good for datea, business meals and friends’ get-togethers.
Such a charming restaurant!
No entrance to the garden necessary to eat here, but you can access to the gift shop.
The food is deliciously diverse with unique preparations that are sure to amuse your bouche!! (French for mouth)
I look forward to bringing out of town guests to eat here as it is always a nice atmosphere.
The garden setting was gorgeous, the server was friendly and well informed. Two out of three meals were very good, but the beet salad was a disappointment. The beets were hard and tasteless, and there was nothing else other than greens. I expected feta or Gorgonzola cheese with juicy beets.
The Botanical Gardens is a great place for this restaurant. Our server(Brad) was excellent. He was essential in helping us make the right entree decisions for each one of us. The menu is limited but extremely varied . We had Duck enchiladas(very good),gertrudes burger(excellent),an earth grain salad(very good, roasted vegetables and pea soup(very good). I would definitely recommend this restaurant to visitors and people that live locally,it is definitely a gem!!.
We were guests of a wedding party for the Luminarios, which was great, and we thought we could eat at Gertrudes for the new year's special "hoppin joh", but they did not have it on the 30th. We returned per reservation on the 31st, had that item plus other food, and were delighted with the food, the ambiance, the service. It was a nice evening for Dec. 31st, tho they do close early. Fortuntely, we had not intended to stay late. Great location. Next time, it will be nice to visit the gardens and eat outside during the daytime, but the interior is very welcoming and pleasant, and the sound level fine for conversation.
The food was very good in all respects. The service was solid. I'm glad we dined on the patio because the inside of the restaurant is much too noisy and with tables too close together or too small. Prices are too high by 10-20%. Never the less, dining at Gertrude's is always pleasant over all. Prices, though, will limit us to only special occasions when we are also visiting the Botanical Garden.
This is our 2nd visit and won’t be our last. We had plans for my birthday and we arrived late for our reservations but luckily we called ahead and let them know. Gutrueds was very understanding and accommodating. Now that is great service !! I was really excited when our server came to our table with a complementary Birthday dessert! That is a very special touch!!
To be honest, the best thing about this restaurant is it's patio. The service was also excellent but the food was horrible. The menu was small and exotic and everything we ordered was "interesting" but did not taste good at all. We tried 2 of the appetizers, the hummus and stuffed fry bread was gross. For an entree, I had the $18 hamburger. It was bad. The food here is a mishmash of weird ingredients like quark and squash. For as pricey as this restaurant was, it was very disappointing to me as I had lunch there with my mother from out of town.
Outstanding wait staff and lovely atmosphere, but the food was mediocre. They have an interesting menu and we were able to experience some new flavors, but between an appetizer and two entrees nothing wowed us. Except, actually, the compound butter that came with the bread... that was my favorite component of the entire meal. Everything else was so-so.
Overall, our experience was just OK.
We were dining with another couple and selected Gertrude's for the convenience relative to the Botanic Garden. As we opted to dine outdoors for the ambiance, of great frustration was turning on the overhead heaters (cool/cold evening). This not only interrupted our experience numerous times (three difference heaters were tried), trying to have the wait staff address this situation was a challenge.
Frankly, most restaurants in AZ have this down to a science, with the outdoor heaters working before guests are seated. The entire situation overshadowed what could have been a very positive experience. Paying attention to this detail is important, and having cold guests and food eliminates all other good work.
Our waitress was very helpful and attentive. She smartly described items on the menu. We arrived at 4 p.m. for an early dinner prior to attending the Luminaria festival at DBG. How could they have been out of the Smoked Salmon Salad so early in the evening? I had to punt. Everything else seemed to have beets or hearts of palm and I hate both of them. Our waitress suggested simply putting a chunk of salmon on a leafy salad. Good idea. The salmon was prepared just right; translucent in the middle and well grilled on the outside. Husband ordered duck enchiladas which he enjoyed and ate heartily. Prior to the meal, we enjoyed a cheese plate. Minimal chunks of cheese combined well with the sauces served alongside. Nice meal, albeit expensive, and find service.
It was totally mediocre and expensive. We had three entrees - a burger, buffalo filet and a entree salad. Only the buffalo filet was worthwhile. The burger was cold and the salad totally mediocre and average. All this for $75 before tip. We would have had a better dinner a Mimi's or Pei Wei for a fraction of the price.
I was skeptical as the food was subpar the last 2 times I ate here. I vowed never to dine here again but a friend of mine convinced me to give Gertrude's one more try. I have to say I was pleasantly surprised. While I chose the vegan options (soup, salad and roasted veggies) they were well executed. The vegan cheesecake was amazing!!!! Will definitely return next time I visit the gardens. Service was terrific.
Gertrude's was wonderful. Outside dining was great. Food was excellent, from appetizers to entrees. Filet was fantastic, and the Duck Enchiladas were outstanding. Wine selection was good too. Several local options, that were really quite good. Will definitely return.
This was our second visit to Gertrude's. The 1st visit was for dinner with friends at night and the overall experience was very good. We returned for our 2nd visit for brunch with family and it was even better. The food is great, there was a live musician, and the outdoor seating is remarkable. I would recommend sitting outside and enjoying the sites & sounds of the surrounding Botanical Garden.
