    Gertrude’s is just a beautiful venue in a delightful setting. While everything around the food was excellent I cannot say as much for the two items we ordered. The wild mushroom toast, while tasty was quite expensive ($30.00!) and the presentation rather lackluster. The hummus with vegetables was another poorly thought out dish. The hummus was very good and the chips delicious but the vegetables were huge slices of thick raw carrots and cucumbers. Not very creative or particularly appetizing. I’ve eaten here before and enjoyed my selection but these two were off the mark.

    Gertrude’s is always an enjoyable lunch. Today was especially good since we tried two of their newer dishes: roasted corn tamales and a Korean corn cheese dish. Both were outstanding and, while we have often had Gertrude’s delicious burgers, today’s lunches made us wish we’d gotten more adventurous earlier. Service and ambience were great as always.

    Candidly last time we went was much better than this. Our service was lacking on this occasion, things were forgotten and had to be re-ordered. Overall when the food arrived it was cold, but it was 730 and already late so we ate. Our last experience was quite good so perhaps this was just an off night.

    We lucked out with the weather when we visited this week. It was comfortable enough to dine outside surrounded by the light display. After starting out with the Elote fritters, I took the recommendation of the braised pork and fingerling potatoes. My friends had the salmon, mole enchiladas. We finished off with the donuts and dipping sauces. Just a wonderful evening overall! I hope to return during Zoo Lights season in late November to January so we can do some strolling around as well!

    Gertrude's is a great place for a meal while at the Desert Botanical gardens. Always get great food and great service. It is peaceful and beautiful.
