Gertrude's - Phoenix
Great salmon salad. Loved it. Great bread too. Definitely order it
We enjoyed our dinner at Gertrude’s .
Noisy. Unresponsive staff. Not very friendly either.
Steak had great flavor but had some tough spots.
The location and ambiance was lovely and the service was great. However, except for the Korean Chicken Thighs, the food was rather bland.
Great service. Usually the food has been great. The Korean BBQ Chicken Thighs were way over cooked. The server was very apologetic and it was removed from our bill. The other three meals were just okay.
We were seven women who came to see Electric Desert exhibit. We sat on the patio which we highly recommend! the cocktails were great and the food is creative and delicious.
They have a very interesting menu, every item has a little something unusual or unexpected. I really enjoyed our meal!
Always a rewarding experience. Most of the items on the menu are good, the service is always great. My favorite restaurant just for the ambience while eating outdoors.
Not sure if being Easter Sunday was the reason, but the food was not up to past experiences with this venue. I had the stir fry rice noodle and veggies with add on of shrimp. Shrimp was over cooked and the rice noodle was crunchy and one of the veggies I could not cut with a knife or bite into it. The bread serving came cold, and tasted like it was from the prior day, again not what I have had in the past times enjoying my meal at the Botanical Gardens. Was a bit of a disappointment as we were celebrating our first anniversary of being together.
We had a lovely dinner on the patio. So very glad we opted for outside as it was beautiful and we could actually talk with each other. Inside was very crowded. Our food was quite tasty. Tried a couple of the appetizers first. 2 of our party had the burgers and they looked fantastic. They both felt they had ordered well. The rest of us had the salmon salad which was yummy and very filling. A fun birthday treat was
brought out at the end as we were celebrating a special day.
It’s lovely to eat in the garden. I was disappointed in my Arugula salad. It was not very fresh. I also ordered hanger steak medium well and it came medium, partly rare. Our server was attentive and friendly.
The setting was lovely, but the service was lacking. Plus I would have appreciated the waiter informing us of the specials.
Waiter just came on shift after we had started with another waiter and was inattentive. Too noisy inside with guitar player. Medium rare hamburger was well done. Lobster Quiche was not that good. TOO NOISY INSIDE! we have been here many times for food so very disappointed!
Sunday Easter Brunch and it was fantastic! Great service, quiet in the morning when we were there, very nice service and the food was delicious. We made reservations and go seated outdoors, which is very scenic.
Great Easter morning outside at Gertrude’s!!
Food (a bit slow) and service were great - nice glass of Rioja Rose on a spring day!!
We have dined here in the past and I have really enjoyed the food, so it was extremely disappointing to be served cafeteria quality food. Fish was overcooked, chicken was dry, grains were mushy, bread service (which costs $7) was stale. I might recommend for drinks/appetizers or lunch on the patio, but don't recommend staying for dinner. Disappointing evening.
At the Desert Botanical Garden it is great for a meal then a walk and enjoy the gardens. They do a super job of catering to our Celiac+dairy allergy.
The entire experience was great - service was excellent, so were food, drink and live entertainment. Wish you had some additional menu items - chicken and fish (other than salmon).
We went for an early Easter brunch and while the setting was gorgeous as always, the food quality has really slipped. My son’s hamburger was raw in the middle. My mother’s egg dish was bland and boring. The fried rice was beyond greasy. The arugula and date salad was nice, but if all the entrees fail and only the salad succeeds, how sad is that?
As always, Gertrude's food is delicious. Our waiter was not real personable and very distracted. He didn't take time to make recommendations and seemed a little annoyed with our questions. He seemed to relax a little after a bit...but it wasn't even that busy when we were there. Normally we have EXCELLENT service! We were a little surprised.
We at at Gertrude's when going to the Electric Desert light show at the Phoenix Botanical Garden on a Friday night. The show was fantastic and not to be missed. The restaurant setting was very nice. We sat outdoors so it was much quieter than inside. The waiter was very friendly and attentive. Unfortunately, the food just wasn't very good. We shared the crab dip starter which was more like a thick soup with very little crab pieces in it. We both had the Korean BBQ chicken thighs that had been highly recommended to us by a friend. They were kind of heavy, with breading and sauce, sitting on a mush of veggies and the sauce. It may be a good recipe, but it was not executed well. Definitely go to the garden, but pass on the restaurant if you can.
Reservation was for 5:45. Checked in at 5:40. Hostess friendly. Seated at nearly 6:00. Ordered water first. It arrived right away. Took 10 minutes to get root beer and 1 AZ beer. Waitress very helpful and friendly. Food arrived nearly 20 minutes after that. Very noisy restaurant. Noises from bar (drink prep) very distracting. Difficult to carry on a conversation. with my table mate. Waitress had to shout for us to hear her. Food was good and hot once it arrived. There were empty tables near us, so why the delay?
Prices a bit high for location and menu choices, with many families in the Garden. Web site suggested only Gertrude's when I reserved the tickets for the Electric Desert Show. Had I known about the Patio Cafe I might have taken my 12 yr old granddaughter there instead. At least I would have liked to know about the option early on.
Generally a Fair experience but I would not go to Gertrude's again, nor would I suggest it to friends. Mostly for the noise level.
A beautiful evening in Phoenix unfortunately our meal was not as we would expect. Our fish was over cooked and our waiter mostly non existent. We would have said something to a manager but no one seemed to be present. Previous experiences were fantastic. This was disappointing.
I have dined there for lunch, my favorite, because I like the salads. The dinner menu is a bit limited; however, the presentation is very nice. Sitting outside was lovely....umbrellas shade the sun and the
sundown goes behind the building to lessen the temperature!
The Electric Light show after dinner this day was wonderful! Enjoy!
Great service and tasty food.
Was at the Botanical Gardens for the evening light experience. Had been there since 5p figuring that we'd catch a bite at Gertrude's. Made a reservation via OpenTable for 8p which gave us time both to walk the trails during the daylight, and begin doing the same after dark. Our table was ready at the appointed time. The restaurant was quite full even then. We were seated in a pleasant area outside and the waiter was at our table quickly for drink orders. We waited a bit for the drinks and reviewed the menu for our selections so when the drinks came we could place our orders. It only took maybe 15 minutes for our food to arrive - this gave us plenty of time to chat. Once the food arrived, there wasn't much conversation since it was well presented and quite good. While Gertrude's is a bit pricy, the ambience is wonderful, the service fine and the food well worth the experience.
You can't beat the atmosphere at this outdoor venue. We were afraid it would be too warm, but by dinner time, the sun is low enough that the patio is shaded. It was the icing on the cake of our visit to the botanical garden. If we get back to Phoenix/Scottsdale, we will definitely go back.
Arrived on time. Did not get the outside table requested. Food was marginal and the plating unremarkable. To pay 18.00 dollars for a hamburger that is served with some greasy fingerling potatoes was really too much. Had to find a waiter to request ketchup.
What should have been a lovely experience with our friends was such a disappointed.
Had dinner outside on the patio. Great Food. Waiter was great very attentive to our needs! Would recommend!
The Shrimp Risotto was horrendous! Shrimp was limp, boiled, with no spices. The risotto was not made with aborio rice and the sauce was as bland as Campell's condensed tomato soup! After half of a shrimp and a couple of bites of the rice, our server replaced my meal with the Red Snapper Daily Special, which was very good. One in our party also had the Red Snapper and enjoyed it very much. Another in our party ordered the hamburger, Medium, and it came well done. Wine was very pricey. This was not my first time at Gertrude's and I doubt I'll be going back.
Scrumptious food, and very tasty beverages. The ancient grain risotto under the grilled snapper could have used a bit more seasoning. But the fish was perfection. The Korean chicken was very tender with just the right amount of sauce. The goat cheese beet cheesecake was mind-blowing good.
Excellent food, ambience, and service as expected.
Prior to this experience, I would have recommended Gertrude's. In this case, however, despite indicating a preference for outside seating and the dinner was for a birthday, our party put into a noisy corner and no special birthday treatment was offered. The mains were good (usually great) and the starters were lackluster and not very flavorful.
Our server was very attentive. The food was great! Two of the guests had not eaten at Gertrude’s before and they both enjoyed their lunch. Thank you!
Seated inside. Atmosphere was poor. Waitress was good. Food runner not professional. Very loud and warm. Food was mediocre at best.
I would not recommend for dinner. We have always had a very good lunch experience. However the dinner entrees were almost inedible. Hard to pay $$$ for a very mediocre dining experience.
Hidden treasure for outdoor dining and environment.
The patio was lovely on a Saturday evening. We were there to see the lights for my sisters birthday. Food was delicious! It was very busy but our waitress was absolutely fantastic. I don’t remember her name but she had glasses and medium / short blonde hair. She was professional and friendly and was working hard to make sure all her tables were served in a timely manner. Bravo!!!
Patio dining at this time of year (April) was ideal. Food was good, not great, but the overall experience was very good.
