Gertrude's - Phoenix
Our waiter, though pleasant, seemed to have a lot on his mind. Preoccupied. He forgot a few things. I asked that the heat to be turned off and he went back and forth a number of times before we reminded him again. Also my friend asked for a drink refill. Took a while and he brought water instead. Finally did bring the drink refill. He was a nice person and it might have been an off time or he was very busy. Meal was delicious!
Great patio seating in a beautiful location in PHX. Stop by gift shop for unique AZ treasures.
Good food, excellent service and an amazing local wine selection - I recommend Gertrude's without hesitation.
Sunday brunch is always a delight here. Lawrence from The Pistoleros plays classic rock acoustic as you sit amongst the garden. They have a covered outdoor patio, offering 90% shaded area with a sunny side if you so desire. The food and service are excellent. This is a favorite for a date or relaxing meal.
Liked our waiter. Food was creative and superb and delectable. One of my favorite places.
What a lovely setting for a meal! Food is good, though perhaps a little pricey, but worth it.
The food was nice and they accommodated our large party. Our server was lovely enough and attentive. We found many of the other staff ride and snobbish though. My first experience was making the reservation and the woman was so beyond lovely and sweet. I had to call back and the next person I spoke with was ride, short, and almost made me want to cancel the reservation with her. Upon arrival they were also pretty ride and not personable; as someone who has worked in the industry for years it was pretty shocking.
Overall it was fine and well enough but would have been much more enjoyable if we actually felt welcomed rather than a bother. We did have a larger party but most of us have worked in the industry so are pretty good about being patient customers.
This was supposed to be a birthday celebration. I was beyond disappointed with the food and service. I ordered the polenta bowl, it was pretty tasteless, I left half of it. My son ordered the Korean chicken, it was very dry, my daughter ordered the stir fry rice noodles, she sent it back it was so bad. They never asked if we wanted dessert, but brought an iced donut and 2 tiny scoops of ice cream for the birthday. I WILL NEVER GO BACK TO GERTRUDE’s, it was such a huge disappointment. They took off 25% off the bill, I would have rather pay and be satisfied.
Had the Gertie burger. It was juicy and done to perfection. Sauce was bland.
Overall experience was excellent. The food was outstanding. They have traditional options as well as vegan and gluten free. Some great local flavor dishes which are delicious. Server knowledgeable and friendly. A must place to dine when in the Valley of the Sun.
The only thing good was the setting. The food was terrible- shrimp had no flavor, the jambalaya was especially bad- we spent over $300 on a very bad experience for our family. I never leave reviews but wish someone had stopped us from dining here
Food was good but not outstanding. Crab dip was lacking crab. Service was great. Overall good.
Wonderful waiter, delicious and creative food —the four of us shared the wonderful “morsels platter” for appetizer and 2 lamb shank specials for our main. We also had the chocolate desert and the butter tart with lime and bergamot and chopped mango!! Noise level inside makes it hard to hear but drinks are special and wines good too.
I really want to enjoy my experience here and have in the past. However every time I go the food quality continues to decrease. This along with the price will prevent me from returning.
Over all good experience.
Christmas Luminaria annual event.
Visit to the Botanical garden, dinner after the event.
Rescheduled due to cancelled event and ended up outside on patio. Even though patio wasn’t full we ended up at the outside edge of patio. The appetizer was the best part of the meal. The 3 scallops with a tablespoon of some veggies for $37 was incredibly overpriced even for a premium restaurant. The jambalaya was nothing special. The menu is rather limited but great for vegetarians. The service was quite bad. Our dinner order took more than 30 minutes to arrive after the appetizer. In all we spent over 1.5 hours on dinner missing much of our time that could have been used enjoying Luminarias. Will not go back for dinner, may try brunch sometime.
Cocktails were outstanding as well as most of the food, some of the food was meh. One of the nicest dining patios in town.
Our reservation was 3:15 and the table wasn’t ready when we arrived because they were switching from lunch to dinner. When we were seated we weren’t allowed to order for another half hour. The only appetizer for us was hummus. Not our first choice and we didn’t care for it. My salmon salad was very attractive and plentiful but did t come with bread. The boar chili was only ok. Our waiter was very gracious and the best part of the experience. The hostess was not friendly or apologetic for our delay. I won’t be recommending or going back.
Our waiter was amazing. He set the tone for a wonderful evening at the Gardens. Nice menu that complimented the desert Southwest.
We had dinner before the Luminarias. Korean chicken and pork with potatoes were delicious. Service was perfect. We always enjoy dinner and cocktails at Gertrude's.
It was really special going to Gertrudes in the botanical garden. The vegan tomato soup was outstanding. The rice noodle dish was fabulous. The smoked tofu side dish was super delicious and very different. It was our anniversary and they served us a complimentary scrumptious donut cake!
The shrimp side dish was somewhat boring. They should have been grilled or pan fried for more flavor. The brussels sprouts had a good flavor however they were way under cooked. I wish it had been warmer and then we would’ve eaten outside as it was much less noise here out there. Indoor seating was annoyingly noisy as the kitchen was right there and there was lots of banging from dishes. I think more thought could go into the design of that area to keep the noise down.
In conclusion we will definitely go back!
We were sat right on time for our reservations, the server was great, the food was tasty and the atmosphere was enjoyable.
We requested outside and they said there was no outside seating available. They put us in a corner and the back of the restaurant no view. The sever was rushing us and even the table beside us told him they felt rushed. They steak was good but the potatoes were mediocre. It definitely was not worth the price. Very disappointed
Had dinner before we attended the luminaries event and everything from drink, appetizer, entree and dessert were excellent.
Definitely recommend sitting on the patio- very quiet and warm because of the outside heaters. We had a wonderful evening!
We love it especially eating outside. The cacti surrounding the outside patio are so beautiful and we like that it is quieter than inside dining. One of our favorite places to eat.
Our waitress was distracted and inattentive. She was hurried and wouldn’t wait for us to ask questions about the menu, wouldn’t pick up our dirty plates that were in the way for the next course and at the end of the meal. The food was just ok, not worth the $200 we dropped. The table we had was almost in the gravel, yet there seemed to be many other tables where we could have sat. The receptionist was slow. It seemed like no one cared if we were there or not. Pretty disappointing and I won’t be back nor bring my out-of-towners to visit.
After enjoying the botanical garden Luminaria experience, we sat outside at Gertrude’s. The food, staff and atmosphere were a perfect to end a wonderful date night! Would highly recommend!
The lamb special was amazing. Actually I order lamb whenever I can and this was the best Ive ever had. Best lamb and possibly best comfort food Ive had. We also had Korean fried chicken which was ok but not the same caliber as the the lamb.
It was a wonderful anniversary dinner! I booked online and let them know it was our anniversary and they brought out a special dessert. I can't wait to go back!
Another great experience at Gertrudes. We eat here a few times a year, usually before a garden event - this year the Luminaries. The Scallops with red mole were terrific as was my wife’s flatiron. I have written several reviews of this place so,I’ll,be brief.. this is first rate restaurant with great food and an interesting wine menu. I highly recommend it.
Very inventive and savory menu, plus our server was both delightful and very well informed about everything offered.
Food was good but a bit pricey. Service was good.
Delightful meal in the Desert Botanical Garden. Corn fritters followed by the wild boar made a hearty meal on a chilly night night before Christmas. Well made and flavorful Arizona wines matched the entree. Service that was attentive but not intrusive made a perfect evening out.
Noisy, food was so-so at best and service was awful. Can't recommend at all.
Scallops were cold when served. Food was disappointing. We felt rushed out of there.
Great experience, especially since we had tickets to Luminarias that evening! The food was wonderful and we had great service.
I ordered the duck. The vegetables that accompanied it were absolutely delicious. The duck was flavorful but tough and dry. I would probably not order it again. Our server was Fred and he was excellent.
We were seated indoors, per my request, but near a door and it was uncomfortably cool.
Loved the ambience and food as we celebrated my hubby’s birthday. Would have preferred a more authentic and interesting dessert to tie up the evening. Great location.
