Gertrude's - Phoenix
Yes, we would recommend, with caution. Sadly, the lovely garden patio with center fountain are gone. We will stay tuned to see if the new space is as peaceful and lovely.
Wonderful location. Service was attentive. Food is excellent but portions were small for the price. I am not advocating increased portion size but rather looking at the prices charged. Perhaps due to increased costs this may not be feasible. Just be aware that it is noticeable.
The patio was under construction yet, we had a nice luncheon outside, with relatively little noise and the ambiance remained pleasant. Our server was friendly, food was good.
They are currently remodeling so we missed sitting out on the open air patio, temp outside patio is not near as good. I sure hope the remodel gives same great outdoor living experience as old patio seating. The hostess seemed a bit inexperienced, worried about guests that haven't showed up yet versus guests that were standing in front of her. Food is always excellent.
Great place to eat and relax
Great place for a celebration or just a happy evening after a visit to the Garden. Can't wait for the Patio dining to be finished & ready for use.
We were seated outside. The noise from construction was so loud and annoying. We moved inside. It was much better although service was below average. We had to ask for water and ticket.
Overall this restaurant is recommended. The food is good though not great. Tasty and plated nicely. But certainly not exceptional (the prices are a little higher than the offerings warrant). The location was having remodel work done so we sat outside on a dirt floor "patio". This was not bad and was in fact more inviting than inside which was dark from coverings on the windows. The service is only OK. Everyone serving could use a crash course in customer service at Denny's. Familiarity with the menu was just about zero. We ordered a salad which arrived with the main entree. When we registered a modest complaint that it would have been nice to have salad ahead of the main, the delivery person was astonished that we'd not want salad along with the main. Our bad! It also seemed a little understaffed since we waited around 10-15 minutes to receive our check. Overall this is an OK place for lunch when visiting the DBG.
I often have a hard time finding items on their menu that don’t include foods I don’t like. This time I was interested in the scallops but I’m not a fan of beets or cilantro. The server suggested getting the scallops a la carte with roasted vegetables as a side. I neglected to ask what the vegetables were. I got cauliflower and green beans. I like roasted cauliflower when it’s prepared correctly—crispy and carmelized on the outside and soft inside. This was pretty raw and not carmelized. I don’t ever choose to eat green beans and I didn’t enjoy these.
The scallops were good.
I doubt I will be going to Gertrudes again. It is expensive and the menu items are often too experimental or spicy for my tastes. We usually sit outside but that wasn’t available and the indoor space isn’t that attractive.
We were at Gertrude's later in the evening so it was quiet. Menu choices were quite interesting. I had the Wild Boar, which was quite good.
It was a beautiful day so we ate outside. The outdoor seating looks like it was temporary as it looked like the regular garden patio is under repair or update. It was still nice but not quite like the regular patio. At least they were able to still provide an outdoor space.
Food and service were excellent and presentation is important to them.
Thank you for a lovely lunch.
We were seated on the patio for a lovely quiet dinner! The food, service and atmosphere were excellent!
I LOVE Gertrude's! Fabulous food. My best friend, Valerie, came out, from California, whom I haven't seen in years. We had a wonderful lunch, on Sunday, on the outdoor patio area. Highly recommend!! :)
We ate on the terrace, so it was quiet and comfortable. The burger is one of the best burgers in town, outstanding! Our server was very personable and accommodating. Kudos!
The food was great! We were here for brunch. The food was tasted great, and was artfully prepared and presented. I had the Breakfast Fried Rice. The service could have been better. Accommodations for our baby were not very good, with the hostess not recognizing that we had a baby and not providing a seat until we pointed it out. The water service was very hit or miss.
Love Gertrude's! Always interesting menu & service is top notch! Go whenever I have an opportunity & delight in taking friend's there for their first time! Thank you...
The food was delicious and the ambience was good. The problem was the server. They gave me the wrong check and I was charged the wrong amount. I brought it up to the manager to pay the difference in cash because I paid less than I should have and I wanted to be very honest about the situation. The manager tried to get me to pay the bill again with my card assuring me that the charge was canceled out and when I checked my bank it wasn’t. So, I paid the difference in cash and it was just an awkward situation.
We were celebrating a birthday and the staff provided a hand written card with signatures which doubled as a free appetizer in a future visit. It was a great personal touch that separates them from any other restaurant by providing a family feel. Great food and service, I would highly recommend to anyone in the area who enjoys high end foods in a casual setting.
Outdoor patio which had been requested and was “confirmed “ was in fact closed due to renovations. Indoors is loud and congested. A totally different experience.
Gertrude’s restaurant is a welcome relief from the formulaic, fast food type places that dominate the valley. To say the menu is unusual is an understatement. The food is expertly prepared and artistically presented. Some portions tend to be small which is further aggravated by being over priced. Example: three scallops priced at $37. So, be ready to spend $$ on fancy, unusual fare.
The meal was excellent: the risotto was the best one I’ve ever had. The server was very attentive, but yet not too disruptive
We each ordered the shrimp from the "sides" menu and 2 different veggies, fingerling potatoes -which were much too good and mixed veggies- crisp and tasty..
We went there to eat in the garden. The garden was torn up and no one told us. We were seated outdoors Under some glaring lights and sitting on some gravel underfoot. Very unappealing. The server was quite good and some of the drinks were as well. But the food was mostly oversalted and the hamburger was mealy. Very disappointed.
The food was not as good as usual. Brocolli was very tough and uncooked it the stir fry. The server was not very attentive and did not bring everything asked for. Had to get another person to get dessert menu and check.
Gertrude’s features unusually fishes such as Wild Boar in Green Chile Sauce, as well as en excellent, creamy Risotto with Wild Mushrooms. All perfectly prepared and served quickly and courteously
This is my go to location to bring any visiting family or friends. It’s also my favorite spot to celebrate an occasion.
We had a excellent server. She checked with us throughout our meal. She was very friendly and offered food/drink suggestions. The food was excellent. We didn't care for the dirt floor on the outside seating. The patio wasn't open and that is much nicer for outside dining.
The outside was being remodeled and no one told us that when we requested outside. Loud and dark inside. Charged us for incorrect wine. Food was just ok. We eat here at least once per year and was disappointed this time. Menu was very hard to read
We ate the daily special, a Reuben sandwich, at the bar since the restaurant space is lessened during the patio remodel. Food was delicious and the service professional, cheerful and friendly. We had a great birthday celebration there and will be back.
My boyfriend & I went to a concert at the Gardens. We had dinner at Gertrude's before. The food was delicious. And how nice that the restaurant was quiet enough that we could have a conversation.
It was nice to be there dining at the garden. The service is great, the foods are better then expected but the garden can be clean abit. Other then that, it’s nice.
We have a very sensitive Celiac and dairy allergy. Kristen our server as well as the manager took SUPER care of us, with full dialogue with the chef and confirmation of ingredients. We have been many times and every time they have taken the same high level of care. They make it a great experience. Also the temporary patio dining is spectacular. I know they are planning to keep it as a bar area but wish they would keep it as permanent dining space. We understand the kitchen has a limit on # of meals-per-hour they can support ;-). Thank you!
One of the very best meals I’ve ever had! I ordered the Grains & Seeds Bowl (made with cracked freekah, sunflower seeds, hemp hearts, chia seeds, walnuts, radish, edamame, dragon fruit, and a balsamic reduction). YUMMO. Absolutely wonderfully light and refreshing after the 113°heat!
And they threw in dessert on the house, so I chose the Mexican Lime Butter Tart (with Toasted Marshmallow + Candied Chili) but had it packed to go. Highly recommend this place if you ever go to Phoenix and visit the Desert Botanical Garden!
We had a wonderful waiter, very attentive, and full of knowledge about the meals. We lucked out and got there on the last day the restaurant was open before renovations. Can't wait to see the "new" decor.
By the way I had the white chocolate french toast. Yum!
Lovely, fresh, locally grown food. our waiter was outstanding and a vert enchanted garden environment. Will return to Gertrudes.
Great food and drink. Service was excellent. Loved the brussel sprouts. Dessert was delicious as well.
Beautiful location in the botanical garden. Go to the garden too. Food was good. I know they are in the desert but getting wild salmon over farmed salmon would be a better food choice. They are closing for a renovation so the place should become even better. They had fun and tasty non alcoholic drinks refreshing in the heat.
It is nice to have this restaurant if you are visiting the Botanical Garden but not worth the effort if you are wanting a special place to dine out.
We have dined at Gertrude's on numerous occasions while vacationing. All past experience has been very good. This time was horrendous. It started when we ordered a crab dip appetizer with a hair on the plate. The plate was white and the hair was dark. Seems like a basic prerequisite to not serve clients a hairy plate. I then had to get up and ask for a new plate as I could not get their attention from my seat. At no time during our entire visit was there a simple apology of any kind; never mind any type of bill credit or free dessert/cocktail. Very disappointing. What I believe was the manager on duty (middle-aged woman) who was the person that served us the hairy plate, had a surly disposition. Maybe a bad day, but in the end you are in the service business.
Disappointing for sure and it will be quite some time if ever, that we return to Gertrude's
My grains and seeds bowl was delicious. The hummus was inedible. Please change your recipe.
