Gertrude's - Phoenix
Great place to start before wandering through the Botanical Gardens (particularly at Christmas time). We've been there often (be sure to have a reservation.) Food is consistently good, and reasonably priced. Service is generally good for it being so busy. Very loud (particularly inside)--patio is better. Interesting drinks--wine list pretty limited.
Seated us on time even though packed. Food was well prepared and not to much or too little. We split a salad and each had an entree. Some decent wines to choose from. Way better then I would expect from inside a botanical garden
The service and people were great. The venue is also good, but the food was average at best.
We sat outside. I would not even recommend sitting inside.
Gertrudes is always a great spot, especially when visiting the Dessert Botanical Gardens.
Great menu, great service, great atmosphere.
Our group of seven was royally treated by David. We all loved the menu and presentation.
We will definitely return.
We had to change our reservation from inside to outside at a later time. What a sweet surprise! The heat lamps provided plenty of warmth and we enjoyed wonderful food under the sky and lighted trees. It was a lovely, festive dinner.
Use to come every time we were in Phoenix with family. Always great atmosphere food drinks and service. I have no idea what happened. Food ok drinks ok and service dull. The waitress not engaging and felt she was obligated to wait on us. No attention at all. Total disappointment. Lucky they are at the botanical gardens and there’s nothing else. Tourist trap. Not coming again.
Too little for too much. Duck was chewy and dry. Farmers soup was thick and more like pasta sauce than soup. The cold green tea was the only item I would recommend.
Excellent food; excellent service, excellent ambiance!
Food is outstanding, a little pricey for just hamburger even though it was very tasty. Salad was to die for. wow. Ambience was outstanding. Hard to beat eating on the middle of desert with the sunset as a back drop. Will eat there again. The server and those around the bar could have paid a little more attention to our table needing water refills.
Wonderful atmosphere and amazing food. The staff is friendly and efficient.
Obviously my responses are affected by the construction going on. We return to Gertrude's often, but Saturday's experience was not as enjoyable as usual. Patio dining will soon return with a much better ambiance. One comment about the food. There's waaaay too much of it. Your servings are huge. I tried my best, but I could hardly put a dent on my lunch. I'd much rather enjoy a reasonable serving rather than an overwhelming one. I had the salmon salad. But, even with the negatives, we'll return often.
This was one pick for date night with my wife and it was a great selection.
Food was very good and service was also good. The only "bad" thing is that they are under construction, so seating is a bit "make-shift" and the view of the gardens is mostly obscured. I am sure it will be lovely when they are done with construction.
Thank you so much taking time to share stars. We LOVE stars. Moreover we LOVE your patronage and look forward to serving you again real soon on our renovated Patio!!! Michelle Jacob, GM
I was traveling on business and dining alone that night. My server was attentive and very friendly which I appreciated. The food was excellent and there were many gluten free choices. The gf donuts with dipping sauces were divine! Great dining experience.
Delicious food, gracious and accommodating service, wonderful setting!
Excellent service great side portions, waitress was awesome. Nice to finish up a dinner and walk around at the botanical gardens
I have to say that the quality of food is always delicious. We had the wild boar and the beef entrées both of which were outstanding!
We tasted the local Arizona wine which we weren’t crazy about so went with the California choices which were excellent.
Yes, we would recommend, with caution. Sadly, the lovely garden patio with center fountain are gone. We will stay tuned to see if the new space is as peaceful and lovely.
Thank you for taking the time to share your experience and for being patient as we complete upgrades to make your time with us even better than before. Please let me know when you are in so we can share the updated patio together! I look forward to serving you soon! Michelle Jacob, GM firstname.lastname@example.org
With this being located inside the desert botanical gardens the outside was wonderful. The service is a bit slow, but we were on vacation. We came for brunch as a party of 8 before touring the gardens and enjoyed the food. I ordered a frittata and it was a bit overcooked. My son loved his huevos rancheros. Someone else had french toast and were enthusiastic about the sauce
The prickly pear cosmos are delicious. Great place for a group.
Wonderful location. Service was attentive. Food is excellent but portions were small for the price. I am not advocating increased portion size but rather looking at the prices charged. Perhaps due to increased costs this may not be feasible. Just be aware that it is noticeable.
Thank you for taking time to share stars! We love stars, but more than stars, we love that you choose to join us. Our choice to source locally is reflected in our pricing as is our "fresh" campaign. Without a freezer or large storage area, the "fresh" quality reflects a bit on plate cost. Thank you for taking time to share your expectations as they truly matter to us. We look forward to serving you again soon! Michelle Jacob, GMemail@example.com
The patio was under construction yet, we had a nice luncheon outside, with relatively little noise and the ambiance remained pleasant. Our server was friendly, food was good.
They are currently remodeling so we missed sitting out on the open air patio, temp outside patio is not near as good. I sure hope the remodel gives same great outdoor living experience as old patio seating. The hostess seemed a bit inexperienced, worried about guests that haven't showed up yet versus guests that were standing in front of her. Food is always excellent.
Great place to eat and relax
Great place for a celebration or just a happy evening after a visit to the Garden. Can't wait for the Patio dining to be finished & ready for use.
We were seated outside. The noise from construction was so loud and annoying. We moved inside. It was much better although service was below average. We had to ask for water and ticket.
Overall this restaurant is recommended. The food is good though not great. Tasty and plated nicely. But certainly not exceptional (the prices are a little higher than the offerings warrant). The location was having remodel work done so we sat outside on a dirt floor "patio". This was not bad and was in fact more inviting than inside which was dark from coverings on the windows. The service is only OK. Everyone serving could use a crash course in customer service at Denny's. Familiarity with the menu was just about zero. We ordered a salad which arrived with the main entree. When we registered a modest complaint that it would have been nice to have salad ahead of the main, the delivery person was astonished that we'd not want salad along with the main. Our bad! It also seemed a little understaffed since we waited around 10-15 minutes to receive our check. Overall this is an OK place for lunch when visiting the DBG.
I often have a hard time finding items on their menu that don’t include foods I don’t like. This time I was interested in the scallops but I’m not a fan of beets or cilantro. The server suggested getting the scallops a la carte with roasted vegetables as a side. I neglected to ask what the vegetables were. I got cauliflower and green beans. I like roasted cauliflower when it’s prepared correctly—crispy and carmelized on the outside and soft inside. This was pretty raw and not carmelized. I don’t ever choose to eat green beans and I didn’t enjoy these.
The scallops were good.
I doubt I will be going to Gertrudes again. It is expensive and the menu items are often too experimental or spicy for my tastes. We usually sit outside but that wasn’t available and the indoor space isn’t that attractive.
We were at Gertrude's later in the evening so it was quiet. Menu choices were quite interesting. I had the Wild Boar, which was quite good.
It was a beautiful day so we ate outside. The outdoor seating looks like it was temporary as it looked like the regular garden patio is under repair or update. It was still nice but not quite like the regular patio. At least they were able to still provide an outdoor space.
Food and service were excellent and presentation is important to them.
Thank you for a lovely lunch.
We were seated on the patio for a lovely quiet dinner! The food, service and atmosphere were excellent!
I LOVE Gertrude's! Fabulous food. My best friend, Valerie, came out, from California, whom I haven't seen in years. We had a wonderful lunch, on Sunday, on the outdoor patio area. Highly recommend!! :)
We ate on the terrace, so it was quiet and comfortable. The burger is one of the best burgers in town, outstanding! Our server was very personable and accommodating. Kudos!
The food was great! We were here for brunch. The food was tasted great, and was artfully prepared and presented. I had the Breakfast Fried Rice. The service could have been better. Accommodations for our baby were not very good, with the hostess not recognizing that we had a baby and not providing a seat until we pointed it out. The water service was very hit or miss.
Love Gertrude's! Always interesting menu & service is top notch! Go whenever I have an opportunity & delight in taking friend's there for their first time! Thank you...
Thank you for taking time to share stars! We love stars, but more than stars, we love that you choose to join us. We look forward to serving you and your friends again soon! Michelle Jacob, GMfirstname.lastname@example.org
The food was delicious and the ambience was good. The problem was the server. They gave me the wrong check and I was charged the wrong amount. I brought it up to the manager to pay the difference in cash because I paid less than I should have and I wanted to be very honest about the situation. The manager tried to get me to pay the bill again with my card assuring me that the charge was canceled out and when I checked my bank it wasn’t. So, I paid the difference in cash and it was just an awkward situation.
We were celebrating a birthday and the staff provided a hand written card with signatures which doubled as a free appetizer in a future visit. It was a great personal touch that separates them from any other restaurant by providing a family feel. Great food and service, I would highly recommend to anyone in the area who enjoys high end foods in a casual setting.
Outdoor patio which had been requested and was “confirmed “ was in fact closed due to renovations. Indoors is loud and congested. A totally different experience.
Gertrude’s restaurant is a welcome relief from the formulaic, fast food type places that dominate the valley. To say the menu is unusual is an understatement. The food is expertly prepared and artistically presented. Some portions tend to be small which is further aggravated by being over priced. Example: three scallops priced at $37. So, be ready to spend $$ on fancy, unusual fare.
The meal was excellent: the risotto was the best one I’ve ever had. The server was very attentive, but yet not too disruptive
