Gertrude's - Phoenix
Sat, Sun 8:00 am–3:00 pm
Mon–Fri 10:30 am–3:00 pm
Daily 4:00 pm–8:00 pm
The beer was warm, the cocktails subpar, the layout of the venue disappointing, and the dishes, one-dimensional. Overall, poor.
Our waiter made our anniversary night even more special, offering gentle advice on food and beverage choices. After 43 years of marriage, we look for a dinner venue that will be a relaxing time for quiet conversation with interesting (and some local AZ) food and beverage choices. The Desert Botanical Garden setting is gorgeous! The restaurant fits comfortably with it's setting.
Gertrude's is always great for business, special, and casual lunches and dinners! Seasonal menu provides refreshing changes whenever I go. Can't beat the setting at Desert Botanical Gardens!
Great meal, great service! The Gertie’s Benedict and BLTE were both excellent. Josh provided fantastic service. Thanks for another wonderful meal. We will be back soon.
Wonderful meal! Made reservations for a team dinner with out of town guests and it was fantastic! Service was top notch and our meals were excellent. Enjoyed the wild boar, shrimp & “grits” and vegan risotto. We also shared the dark chocolate ancho torte. That’s a must have dessert! The chocolate and spice were perfectly combined.
Mexican dishes are not spicy enough. Service was not intrusive but needed to refill water, iced tea and sodas more.
Service was excellent. Salad was great, but I did not at all care for the cold honeydew soup or the snickerdoodle cookie with my ice cream.
My daughter and I were visiting from Florida and was at the Botanical Gardens. Stopped in for Sunday brunch and was pleasantly surprised. I had the boar-ritto which I cannot put into words how amazing it was. We finished it with donut holes. We can’t stop talking about them. It is hard to be so far away!
Everything was outstanding as in my review above, but the A/C must not have been working as we were all drenched in sweat by the end of our meal. Yes we were sitting inside as it was 108 degrees last Friday night. They have a wonderful patio but no mister system.
Family got together for Father’s Day everyone found something wonderful on the menu for Sunday Brunch service was excellent will come back soon
We were visiting Phoenix and came across Gertrudes on Open Table not knowing that it was part of the botanical gardens. Great food and service , a wonderful setting.
The menu was excellent and very creative. The use of new and local items is impressive. All our dishes came out superb and tasted awesome, well done!
We enjoy Gertrudes for its local ingredients. The three of us had a selection of salads, eggs and meats. The Frittata was delicious as was my fig salad. My daughter had the salmon salad and enjoyed every bite. Our server was prompt on filling our water and coffee cups. We like to go there when we visit my daughter as she lives close by.
This food and service far exceeded my expectations. After a stroll thru the botanical gardens on a very hot day. I sat down to the most gracious warm and attentive waiter. He was involved but not in my face at all the perfect balance of providing everything you need when you need it and giving you space. I started my kick with a chilled soup of honeydew melon, cucumber, mint and cream- it was so yummy, I just wanted to dive into this bowl and I wanted it to be an endless bowl of soup! For my main course, I had the shrimp and jiicima appetizer which was ample as a meal with watermelon, cucumber, feta cheese and pepitos. This was also delicious! I will definitely recommend and will be back! It must be nice in the evening when the garden is lit up!
I was really looking forward to having dinner here, based on the good reviews and it's association with the Desert Botanical Garden. Unfortunately, I was disappointed. I ordered the matcha bramble which tasted like a blackberry lollipop. Our waiter graciously provided me with some additional gin to dilute the sweetness, but it was still way too sweet. The Korean fried chicken thighs was blanketed with kimchee sauce - it was really too much. A light drizzle would have been sufficient. Our appetizer said it came with arugula, but there wasn't a leaf of it on the plate. For the price, I would have expected higher quality choices on the menu (no fish?) and better taste pairings. On a more positive side, the Brussels sprouts were good (although covered with too much sauce) and the room was comfortable, not freezing like many indoor restaurants in the summer.
Had brunch today. had date arugula salad- healthy and delicious, Server was attentive.
Gertrude's - right near the entrance to the Desert Botanical Gardens - is a great place for fine dining in a casual and lovely location. The view on the patio is of the Dale Chihuly glass at the Gardens' entry. Gertrude's focuses on taking classic dishes and updating them with unique, traditional and authentic ingredients of the Sonoran Desert. It's become our go-to dinner destination when we're at the Gardens for an event, in this case, the performance of Arizona Ballet's Eroica.
The menu is very interesting and everything I have ordered there is excellent. Be sure to try the bread and was he grain salad– you will be stunned. I Do not think there is a lovelier venue for outdoor dining in Phoenix, particularly when you can stroll through the garden after dinner!
Wonderful experience -- beautiful setting, good food and service.
What a spectacular evening before the ballet performance, everything was perfect.
Terrible experience...horrible service and over-priced, mediocre food. Will NEVER return!
Always bring out of town company for weekend brunch. Consistently outstanding. Professional wait staff, outstanding fare and beautiful setting
Interesting menu. Nice prelude or follow-up to a visit at the Garden.
love Gertrudes when we visit DBG. Only ever sit outside because it is SO beautiful.
Gertrude's is one of the best restaurants in the Valley. Love the food and patio.
Wow! Our first time at this gem of a restaurant and we will be back. We were celebrating a dear friend's 60th birthday and then attending the Ballet Arizona performance and it was a magical night. OUr server was exeptional and the food fantastic. Highly recommend.
Great experience from the food to service to ambience equals great value.
Overall, great dining experience. The only snag was that we had made a reservation early enough in time to make it to the ballet that was being performed at the Desert Botanical Garden that evening. However, they kept telling us our table was not yet free. When it was 20 or so minutes after our reservation time. I had to get into a discussion with the hostess about the fact that they had empty tables outside and we need to get seated to make it to the show. She kept telling me that those tables were reserved but the issue was we also had a reservation and they did not have a table available for us. We finally were seated at one of the empty outdoor tables and the waiter did his best to get us our meals quickly but it put us in a rush and we were late getting to the show.
I would not recommend inside seating as it was very loud inside but the patio was lovely.
Another great meal at Gertrudes. We eat here periodically, and have never been disappointed. The menu changes frequently enough to always be interesting. The chef is very creative, with several unique and interesting choices. Perfect for before garden events, or just a night out. This is one of the best patio dining spots in the valley. The wine list is short but interesting with many Arizona wines.I enjoyed the wild boar this time, and my wife enjoyed her meal also.
Perfect spot for a beautiful night. We were going to the ballet performance at 8, so got a reservation at 5:45. We got a nice table outside and enjoyed a glass of wine. Out waiter started out strong...very knowledgeable about wine, but quickly became visibly frustrated when we decided not to get appetizers before our meal. It was bizarre. I was happy to forgive him for forgetting to put in half my order (they took car of it quickly), but his frustration with us was so obvious and unwarranted. Other customers were complaining about the sun’s glare and and he angrily adjusted the umbrella, making everyone uncomfortable. Food was good enough considering the beautiful setting. I’ll go back but hopefully get a nicer server.
Food was very disappointing and priced MUCH too high considering the lack of quality! My girlfriends and I attend Ballet Under the Stars every year and have made reservations @ Gertrude's every year as well. Because of our last experience, we decided to dine elsewhere before the performances going forward.
We had a reservation but still had to wait about 15 minutes. The menu was different then what was online. The waiter seemed rushed and had an attitude. All the food we got was good.
Our party of 7 each ordered a different dish. All but 1 was disappointed in the food. Our server was very nice.
The most beautiful and peaceful setting for a meal. The food is always superb.
Lovely Mother’s Day brunch on patio! Wonderful service, Gertrude’s has become our family’s special occasion restaurant!
Our family loves to go to Gertrudes for special times together then on to explore the garden.
Had a Mother’s Day brunch with the family. Service was excellent, atmosphere was relaxing, food was very good.
Love this place. We were visiting the area and loved it so much we went back twice. I had a mixed green salad with a side of roasted shrimp and roasted veggies. My husband had a salad with dates and also added shrimp. Perfect for lunch or dinner.
Visiting the Desert Botanical Garden, stopped for lunch after
Wards. Food was excellent, great spot to cool down and relax.
We had a party of 8 on a Sunday evening and service could not have been better. Thoughtfully the restaurant called twice to make sure I knew that the gardens would be closing at 3 p.m. and asked if I wanted to re-book for an evening when they were open. A family event so we stayed with the booking with no regrets. Attentive service and great food. Very relaxing atmosphere. Highly recommend it.
