Eaten here before so had to go again. The food is always fresh, full of delicious flavor and always interesting. The service is perfect, friendly, warm, knowledgeable and just the right amount of attentiveness and space.
I love Gertrudes for any occasion! My sisters were here and we were celebrating two birthdays. The food was DELICIOUS and we wandered the garden following dinner through the sunset and twilight! Delightful!
Food was not a good value. Service and atmosphere great!
Great food, excellent service, beautiful setting. Will be back soon to try more of the new seasonal menu items.
A true dining discovery. Food is great and staff is very well trained! Well managed!! And an unbelievable environment.
Both husbands ordered the wild boar. Meat was not good due to griddle!
Gazpacho should have texture - this was pureed to baby food. Then, a medium quality olive oil was poured on the surface which was too much and not needed. Even when combined, the oily quality could not be dismissed.
The burger bun was so soggy that a knife and fork was needed. After the bun was discarded, the meat proved tasteless, not spiced, and there was no redeeming characteristic. It was akin to having a can of fruit cocktail over fresh assorted fruits. A drive through any fast food restaurant would have been better.
My beau and I came to Gertrude's to have an anniversary brunch after walking around the Botanical Gardens, and it was so wonderful!
Our server was attentive without being overwhelming, and the food was just delicious. I enjoyed the Breakfast "Boar"-ito, and I barely finished it. My partner had the Benedict and loved it. The chorizo wasn't oily, and had a really nice level of spice to it.
For dessert we had a gluten free cheese cake (he's celiac) and it was just so yummy and refreshing! I do wish that it had been a little bit larger of a portion compared to the portion sizes of the breakfast, but given that we were so full after breakfast it's probably best that it was a little smaller.
We also enjoyed a couple of their mimosas. He had the blood orange, and I tried the hibiscus. It was a little sweet for what I really wanted but it was so delicious! I did get a traditional mimosa afterwards though.
They really helped to make our brunch memorable and enjoyable.
We’ve been to the Desert Botanical Garden many times during our vacation visits to the Phoenix area from NJ. Each time we were there we saw Gertrude’s crowded with people. We decided to go for Sunday brunch on this visit. It was ok. The restaurant was quiet and there’s construction going on which looks like the foot print of the restaurant has gotten smaller. The food choices were diverse.
You can't beat the location and ambiance at Gertrude's, being part of the amazing Desert Botanical Garden, located right next to the main entrance, I'm not a "Garden" type but DBG is truly magical.
Upon our arrival it was uncomfortably warm (we are phoenix natives, so I'm saying it was WAY too warm) in the restaurant. Upon inquiry, we were essentially told this and that about generators and time of year (late August) that distilled down to: it's just that way, and sometimes even worse they said! I was really surprised, it was not comfortable and is costing them business.
We also had a late reservation (7:30p Satruday night, they close at 8) but that being said, the staff was slow and overall it felt like they'd mentally left for home already. I'd just expect more. I don't write many reviews, I'm not a complainer, but I am a business owner, and if that was my restaurant these things would be fixed immediately, they aren't up-to-par, considering who and where they are, I'd like to see them step up their game.
Always enjoy the meal @ Gertrude’s! What a pleasurable experience & a perfect Birthday lunch. Thanks for making it special!
Way overpriced. The food was just OK, but quite expensive for what you get. There were only a few other people in the restaurant which seemed odd for a Friday evening. Our waitress was attentive and pleasant, but when we left the restaurant even though the manager and other staff were just standing around, no one even acknowledged us. I would’ve expected that since the restaurant was basically empty, they would have thanked us for coming or at least wished us a nice evening. Overall is was disappointing.
Service was very good and attentive. The food choices were limited and not as good as past visits to this restaurant. Would not go again
Crab and shrimp dip was okay but did not seem to contain much crab or shrimp and stale chips served with it, burger was tasty, goat cheesecake was very good. Good price. Ants due to construction but did not bother us
Wonderful evening with attentive service and delicious cocktails and food. Absolutely loved the creative peach cobbler cocktail! And appreciated the chilled gazpacho soup on a hot summer day. I’m never disappointed when I visit here.
Perfect place to duck in and escape the hot afternoon sun! Botanical Garden + great meal + super helpful server = awesome day in Phoenix for tourist!
Amazing menu with high quality food and preparation. Will definitely come back to bring out of town clients and special events.
While our waiter himself was fine, we witnessed the hostes making to go drinks and storing them with her hand all over the top of a straw with now cover and did not replace them prior to giving to the customer. When the manager was later informed there was no concern from him at all. Also food is completely over priced.
The beer was warm, the cocktails subpar, the layout of the venue disappointing, and the dishes, one-dimensional. Overall, poor.
Our waiter made our anniversary night even more special, offering gentle advice on food and beverage choices. After 43 years of marriage, we look for a dinner venue that will be a relaxing time for quiet conversation with interesting (and some local AZ) food and beverage choices. The Desert Botanical Garden setting is gorgeous! The restaurant fits comfortably with it's setting.
Gertrude's is always great for business, special, and casual lunches and dinners! Seasonal menu provides refreshing changes whenever I go. Can't beat the setting at Desert Botanical Gardens!
Great meal, great service! The Gertie’s Benedict and BLTE were both excellent. Josh provided fantastic service. Thanks for another wonderful meal. We will be back soon.
Wonderful meal! Made reservations for a team dinner with out of town guests and it was fantastic! Service was top notch and our meals were excellent. Enjoyed the wild boar, shrimp & “grits” and vegan risotto. We also shared the dark chocolate ancho torte. That’s a must have dessert! The chocolate and spice were perfectly combined.
Mexican dishes are not spicy enough. Service was not intrusive but needed to refill water, iced tea and sodas more.
Service was excellent. Salad was great, but I did not at all care for the cold honeydew soup or the snickerdoodle cookie with my ice cream.
My daughter and I were visiting from Florida and was at the Botanical Gardens. Stopped in for Sunday brunch and was pleasantly surprised. I had the boar-ritto which I cannot put into words how amazing it was. We finished it with donut holes. We can’t stop talking about them. It is hard to be so far away!
Everything was outstanding as in my review above, but the A/C must not have been working as we were all drenched in sweat by the end of our meal. Yes we were sitting inside as it was 108 degrees last Friday night. They have a wonderful patio but no mister system.
Family got together for Father’s Day everyone found something wonderful on the menu for Sunday Brunch service was excellent will come back soon
We were visiting Phoenix and came across Gertrudes on Open Table not knowing that it was part of the botanical gardens. Great food and service , a wonderful setting.
The menu was excellent and very creative. The use of new and local items is impressive. All our dishes came out superb and tasted awesome, well done!
We enjoy Gertrudes for its local ingredients. The three of us had a selection of salads, eggs and meats. The Frittata was delicious as was my fig salad. My daughter had the salmon salad and enjoyed every bite. Our server was prompt on filling our water and coffee cups. We like to go there when we visit my daughter as she lives close by.
This food and service far exceeded my expectations. After a stroll thru the botanical gardens on a very hot day. I sat down to the most gracious warm and attentive waiter. He was involved but not in my face at all the perfect balance of providing everything you need when you need it and giving you space. I started my kick with a chilled soup of honeydew melon, cucumber, mint and cream- it was so yummy, I just wanted to dive into this bowl and I wanted it to be an endless bowl of soup! For my main course, I had the shrimp and jiicima appetizer which was ample as a meal with watermelon, cucumber, feta cheese and pepitos. This was also delicious! I will definitely recommend and will be back! It must be nice in the evening when the garden is lit up!
I was really looking forward to having dinner here, based on the good reviews and it's association with the Desert Botanical Garden. Unfortunately, I was disappointed. I ordered the matcha bramble which tasted like a blackberry lollipop. Our waiter graciously provided me with some additional gin to dilute the sweetness, but it was still way too sweet. The Korean fried chicken thighs was blanketed with kimchee sauce - it was really too much. A light drizzle would have been sufficient. Our appetizer said it came with arugula, but there wasn't a leaf of it on the plate. For the price, I would have expected higher quality choices on the menu (no fish?) and better taste pairings. On a more positive side, the Brussels sprouts were good (although covered with too much sauce) and the room was comfortable, not freezing like many indoor restaurants in the summer.
Had brunch today. had date arugula salad- healthy and delicious, Server was attentive.
Gertrude's - right near the entrance to the Desert Botanical Gardens - is a great place for fine dining in a casual and lovely location. The view on the patio is of the Dale Chihuly glass at the Gardens' entry. Gertrude's focuses on taking classic dishes and updating them with unique, traditional and authentic ingredients of the Sonoran Desert. It's become our go-to dinner destination when we're at the Gardens for an event, in this case, the performance of Arizona Ballet's Eroica.
The menu is very interesting and everything I have ordered there is excellent. Be sure to try the bread and was he grain salad– you will be stunned. I Do not think there is a lovelier venue for outdoor dining in Phoenix, particularly when you can stroll through the garden after dinner!
Wonderful experience -- beautiful setting, good food and service.
What a spectacular evening before the ballet performance, everything was perfect.
Terrible experience...horrible service and over-priced, mediocre food. Will NEVER return!
Always bring out of town company for weekend brunch. Consistently outstanding. Professional wait staff, outstanding fare and beautiful setting
