Gertrude's - Phoenix
We each ordered the shrimp from the "sides" menu and 2 different veggies, fingerling potatoes -which were much too good and mixed veggies- crisp and tasty..
We went there to eat in the garden. The garden was torn up and no one told us. We were seated outdoors Under some glaring lights and sitting on some gravel underfoot. Very unappealing. The server was quite good and some of the drinks were as well. But the food was mostly oversalted and the hamburger was mealy. Very disappointed.
Gertrude’s features unusually fishes such as Wild Boar in Green Chile Sauce, as well as en excellent, creamy Risotto with Wild Mushrooms. All perfectly prepared and served quickly and courteously
This is my go to location to bring any visiting family or friends. It’s also my favorite spot to celebrate an occasion.
The outside was being remodeled and no one told us that when we requested outside. Loud and dark inside. Charged us for incorrect wine. Food was just ok. We eat here at least once per year and was disappointed this time. Menu was very hard to read
We ate the daily special, a Reuben sandwich, at the bar since the restaurant space is lessened during the patio remodel. Food was delicious and the service professional, cheerful and friendly. We had a great birthday celebration there and will be back.
My boyfriend & I went to a concert at the Gardens. We had dinner at Gertrude's before. The food was delicious. And how nice that the restaurant was quiet enough that we could have a conversation.
It was nice to be there dining at the garden. The service is great, the foods are better then expected but the garden can be clean abit. Other then that, it’s nice.
We have a very sensitive Celiac and dairy allergy. Kristen our server as well as the manager took SUPER care of us, with full dialogue with the chef and confirmation of ingredients. We have been many times and every time they have taken the same high level of care. They make it a great experience. Also the temporary patio dining is spectacular. I know they are planning to keep it as a bar area but wish they would keep it as permanent dining space. We understand the kitchen has a limit on # of meals-per-hour they can support ;-). Thank you!
One of the very best meals I’ve ever had! I ordered the Grains & Seeds Bowl (made with cracked freekah, sunflower seeds, hemp hearts, chia seeds, walnuts, radish, edamame, dragon fruit, and a balsamic reduction). YUMMO. Absolutely wonderfully light and refreshing after the 113°heat!
And they threw in dessert on the house, so I chose the Mexican Lime Butter Tart (with Toasted Marshmallow + Candied Chili) but had it packed to go. Highly recommend this place if you ever go to Phoenix and visit the Desert Botanical Garden!
We had a wonderful waiter, very attentive, and full of knowledge about the meals. We lucked out and got there on the last day the restaurant was open before renovations. Can't wait to see the "new" decor.
By the way I had the white chocolate french toast. Yum!
Lovely, fresh, locally grown food. our waiter was outstanding and a vert enchanted garden environment. Will return to Gertrudes.
Great food and drink. Service was excellent. Loved the brussel sprouts. Dessert was delicious as well.
Beautiful location in the botanical garden. Go to the garden too. Food was good. I know they are in the desert but getting wild salmon over farmed salmon would be a better food choice. They are closing for a renovation so the place should become even better. They had fun and tasty non alcoholic drinks refreshing in the heat.
It is nice to have this restaurant if you are visiting the Botanical Garden but not worth the effort if you are wanting a special place to dine out.
We have dined at Gertrude's on numerous occasions while vacationing. All past experience has been very good. This time was horrendous. It started when we ordered a crab dip appetizer with a hair on the plate. The plate was white and the hair was dark. Seems like a basic prerequisite to not serve clients a hairy plate. I then had to get up and ask for a new plate as I could not get their attention from my seat. At no time during our entire visit was there a simple apology of any kind; never mind any type of bill credit or free dessert/cocktail. Very disappointing. What I believe was the manager on duty (middle-aged woman) who was the person that served us the hairy plate, had a surly disposition. Maybe a bad day, but in the end you are in the service business.
Disappointing for sure and it will be quite some time if ever, that we return to Gertrude's
My grains and seeds bowl was delicious. The hummus was inedible. Please change your recipe.
We were given the choice of indoor or outdoor seating online when making the reservation. Since this restaurant is at a botanical garden, outdoor seemed like a nice option so we could enjoy the garden views. Upon arrival, we were informed they didn't have the outdoor seating ready, they tried to make claims that it was so hot most people wouldn't want to sit outside because they don't have a misting system, but they said if we really wanted to sit out there they could make us a table. Not wanting to create more work for people we opted for the indoor seating, with disappointment. They were also hosting a party so the restaurant was terribly loud, I could barely converse with my husband over the din, yet another reason it would've been nicer for us to be outdoors (we're used to the heat, we are locals). The waiter seemed distracted by the party, he brought my husband two flat sodas, made up odd stories about why the soda was flat (involving "cans" when it was obviously soda from a dispenser lacking enough carbonation), & he never received a drinkable beverage, yet we paid for it. The tofu appetizer was bland and boring, needed a dipping sauce at the least. I was excited that they had a couple of vegan and gluten free options, but the entire experience was a let down. Especially for the prices, it was an utter disappointment.
The food was really good and I got a huge portion for the price, which was nice. However, the service was extremely slow, considering the restaurant was not very busy.
Good food. Unique dishes that tasted well.. definitely going back
Outstanding customer experience! Service level was perfect. Food was of the highest quality, delicious and more than adequate in portion size quantity. Great evening out. Highly recommend.
Great ambiance and service. Loved the Prickly Pear Mimosa!
This place is awesome!! The botanical gardens are great too! Our waiter was just attentive enough. The menu is small but has something for everyone. The smoked tofu was great, so was the risotto and grain salad. We will be back.
Food was terrible, forget the price.. Would not return or recommend.
I would have preferred outside seating but it was to hot to sit outside. Noise level was very high inside but better than being outside in the heat. Food was good, service was great. I would come back in the fall so I could enjoy the outdoor setting and less noise.
The menu is a bit all over the place. I really wish this restaurant would focus on the Southwest, given their location at the DBG. Would love to see some creative use of cactus and other native plants. That said, the ahi tuna was wonderful. The thai pasta was just OK. The setting is beautiful and it was very nice out on the patio.
Very limited menu and service that needs much improvement
Staff was more than accommodating. Intending to pick up tickets for Ballet in the Garden I found the box office closed but my dinner reservation conflicted with the time to pick up the tickets when box office was to open. The staff arranged to hold my dinner so that I could slip out to pick up tickets. Although my reservation was made late and patio was full, the staff arranged my table so I could have full view of the patio with all the vegetation and the beautiful glass artist work of Dale Chihuly. I warned the waiter that I drink lots of water hoping he would see to keeping my glass refilled. He brought me my own carafe of water. I felt like a princess. I had not had prickly pear cactus pads since living in Texas. The grilled Grilled Nopales was treat. The prickly pear here in my AZ yard have so many spines/prickles I cannot scrape them all off to cook.
The ambiance was incredible
Service was adequate
Food was delicious
Price of food was way to expensive for quantity of serving
Was once one of my favorites, now moved down the list
Gertrude's is one of my favorite restaurants in Phoenix. It is situated in my favorite place to visit- the Desert Botanical Gardens, so that is a win/win for me.
Just a great atmosphere, great food and everyone was so friendly. I will come back with my girlfriend for sure in the future.
Took cousin and her husband to celebrate her 68th birthday. We are all vegan. We all had different dishes and they were very tasty. We especially liked the beet cheesecake, but didn't like the long wait to get it.
This used to be a favorite place to eat and unwind... such beautiful surroundings. BUT WOW... the food has really terrible lately. The last two times I have dined it has been awful. I had the scallops this time, and they were so over cooked it had the texture of rubber and the mole was smothering and overpowering. Our server was kind but never came over once we received our food (from another server) to see if everything was ok... I ate what I could as we had another engagement to get to. We actually waited quite awhile to get our check.
Too bad... we used to dine here regularly... maybe we’ll try breakfast again... it’s hard to mess up breakfast food right?
Only small complaint, I wish you guys did brunch on days outside of the weekend. Otherwise fantastic.
Breakfast bowl with Clianto fried rice was excellent. Rose sangria was light and refreshing
The food was delicious, and our server John was wonderful. The menu is very different, and we took great delight in choosing. I also appreciated their list of Arizona wines. Definitely going back!
For the cost, there are better restaurants in Phoenix. We were disappointed.
A nice new (for us) spot. A wonderful evening enjoying dinner in the garden. A really good menu with several farm to table items. The scallops were the best my wife has ever had (she says). Good local wines.
Everything was just perfect! The service was good and the food was delicious. It was not too busy on the patio and the surroundings were so peaceful. It made for a very relaxing meal. It’s a little pricey, but we all enjoyed the meal and location so much and considered it worth the price. I would not eat inside the restaurant as it seemed very noisy compared to the patio.
