Great food and value! This was a nice night out for me and my visiting Aunt, who loves Italian. We ordered cocktails and appetizers first - drinks were strong and the bisque was delicious. For our mains, I ordered the smoked chicken fettuccine and she ordered the mushroom risotto - both were amazingly flavorful! I couldn't stop eating and had to have them take it away so I could fit in dessert. We ordered the homemade tiramisu and creme brulee - both tasted of quality ingredients and were nice and light to end our dinner. Their wine selection is great and they have a nice selection of affordable bottles.
The service was the only part lacking. It took more than a few minutes for our waiter to even stop by our table. In fact it was a bit of an awkward wait as he kept passing us by and didn't even acknowledge us. Finally we were able to order, but we kept having to flag him down for everything, ordering more wine, ordering dessert and getting the check. The service waiters did a great job of keeping our water glasses filled and clearing our plates, but the main waiter was not great.
Overall, pretty much right on par with other reviews - poor service but great food. So while I recommend checking it out, come in with a mindset that service will probably be sub-par. Also sign up for the emails, as you will get a 20% off coupon for dinner. Definitely good value!
We did not know it was the last night the restaurant would be open. The food and service were horrendous. Very disappointing. We had been there many times before and brought a couple to celebrate our anniversary. Felt like we were taken advantage of.
We love the attention of the staff and the delicious food especially the seafood and lobster risottos and the osso bucco. The fire on a chilly evening was a nice touch.
Sadly, although we have had good dining experience in years past, our party of seven was disappointed overall, especially because of a number of issues:
(1) We were not given any explanation as to why we weren't seated upstairs as we specifically had requested. We had guests who had concerns about climbing the stairs as well as hearing conversation, which is why I requested upstairs.
(2) When my husband inquired and asked why we were not upstairs when he arrived, he was ignored, which was rude. That night, there was an unoccupied table available upstairs during the entire time we were dining.
(3) As anticipated, the noise level downstairs was generally too high for our party. My husband has hearing problems, and he was not comfortable.
(4) My husband had problems with his order that were ignored by our waiter. Only after several complaints about the dish not meeting his expectations did a different waiter address the issue and removed the item from our bill.
(5) One of our friends lost personal items when leaving the restaurant. She had to return to the restaurant the next day and go through the soiled linens in order to find her lost items.
So, although we have been dining here since Geranio's first opened, I don't think we'll be returning. Very sad indeed.
Everything was very good
Fabulous food, fabulous restaurant! Owner/chef actually waited on us and was incredibly attentive and gracious! Highly recommend this restaurant!
it started very well, made reservations for 8:30pm got there and was seated quickly., order food a bottle of wine, the wine and bread came., at 10:00pm the waiter ask was I ready for my tiramisu., i'm like i've never received my meal, the manager was nice, gave the bottle on the house with an extra glass of some port at the end of the night after we got are food, my dae (wife) still payed without her get the service right attitude, a wonderful night for me, date night aka date school she was showing me how to treat her, i love my dae
Overall a wonderful experience especially for my first restaurant week. However, it seemed they wete under staffed. Our waiter only came to our table three times. We luckily received excellent service from other waiters. Would highly recommend for a date night. We will be back.
I have been coming to this restaurant on a regular basis. this is the first time we were seated upstairs. we are seniors and it is a steep flight. we saw another couple with a boot and cane being seated upstairs also. one of my party got up to go to the rest room and missed the step. the light is not bright and the floors are old dark wood. no staff person came over to see how she was and was not interested in her well being. there was absolutely no concern and was not happy to bring her some ice to put on her knee. unfortunately it dampens one's desire to go to such an establishment. I can no longer recommend this restaurant to my friends nor will I go there.
A delicious meal during Alexandria Restaurant Week and great value. We will certainly be returning even when it's not Restaurant Week with the lower prices. Service was excellent.
We had a lovely time. Pork, swordfish, risotto, lobster bisque - all top notch.
Geranio’s is always a treat. My friends and I ordered 3 different entree salads and each was delicious. The chicken, salmon and shrimp were perfectly prepared. The crusty homemade bread, served warm, completed a great lunch.
Average experience at an above average price.
Went for restaurant week with a group of 4 and had reservations. The table we sat at was so small that we couldn't all fit our legs under it without stepping on each other's feet. Pretty uncomfortable. It took almost 30 min to order and another 30 min to get our first course. I was never offered a refill on wine and had to flag the waiter down to get another glass which came 15 min later. The food was OK. Lobster bisque was fine, mushroom risotto was cooked well, they specifically tout that their salmon is served medium rare unless otherwise noted, I ordered the medium rare salmon, you know...the house specialty, and was served the driest most well done salmon I think I've ever had, after that the house made tiramisu was fine. There are way better Italian restaurants to go to in Old Town.
The Restaurant Week Menu was great as was the service . Always a desirable restaurant for us.
Went with a group of 5 for restaurant week. The service and food were both great. I would definitely recommend and I would also go back.
This was my first visit. The food was great! LOVED IT!
We had an excellent meal on 1/20. I had the lamb shank, my friend had a shrimp and linguini dish. Both were excellent. I thought the entrée prices very reasonable. We started with tomato soup which was delicious! Excellent service. We said we have to go here more often.
The food was excellent. It was a comfortable and beautiful atmosphere. The service was great. I definitely was impressed.
A cold night and a wonderful meal in front of the fire place. Always a great way to spend the evening.
Geranios never disappoints. Go in the evening when they light the candles and ask to sit near the fireplace. It's very romantic and cozy. The wine list is small but there are solid choices and I've found my favorite wine thanks to Geranios (Pedroncelli Sauvignon blanc). The pasta is always cooked perfectly. The complimentary warm bread and butter sends me to a happy place. The service is kind, attentive, and quick. Feels a bit like you're in someone's family kitchen. Thanks for helping build some special memories Geranios!
Love Geronio's! Great ambiance, excellent food and drink, excellent service!
Dined with friends on New Years Eve. Ambience was excellent as well as the food and service. It was a five course fixed meal. Were pleased with every course. Would definitely dine here again.
I usually give 5 star ratings. This last visit was scored lower because the potatoes and asparagus was too cool for my tastes. The place was packed with a party of 45 in the main dining room so I cut them some slack this time. The veal chop was very well cooked and served at the right temperature. This visit was an exception to the excellence this restaurant usually merits.
The food was delicious. Service was a bit slow, but we were seated upstairs and the poor waiters must climb a steep staircase with loaded trays, so that would slow things down.
Authentic Northern Italian cuisine. Good wine list and seasonal menu with tempting specials. Their risotto is among the best I’ve had outside of Italy.
We enjoyed a lovely dinner and attentive service that was accommodating to our finicky son and a take home order for another family member who could not join us. The timing of the drinks to the serving of our entrees was perfect.
Geranio’s is a real gem. The butternut squash soup is the best I’ve ever tasted. Authentic Italian cuisine is carefully prepared and always delicious. The cozy old world ambience is complemented by gracious and unhurried service.
The food here is really good and in this area one might expect to pay more for food this good. The wine was also outstanding. My wife and I both ordered lamb shank with the $9 glass of chianti. We were at this restaurant on a Friday night and the restaurant was quite full. This is a good sign and an indicator that others like this restaurant, too. However, it was really noisy and I don't think the noise level had much to do with where we were sitting. It was very difficult to have a conversation. I think that in the future we will go to Geronio on a different night.
Unfortunately, the night we were there an office party was going on in the next room which created more noise than usual. But, overall, the food was very good, staff attentive (even in spite of large group in next room), and comfortable surroundings. I would definitely go again.
The service was very slow and food wasn't delicious as before
We hadn't been to Geranio's in a few years, and remembered it as an OK restaurant; reliable but not fantastic. We were pleasantly surprised with both the quality of the food and the service. Very friendly/welcoming wait staff and food better than we'd remembered. We will definitely go back more regularly.
Geronio’s never disappoints. Elegantly prepared northern Italian classics (risotto, cream sauces, fish, veal) beautifully presented. We had delectable fried (lightly and crisply) calamari for appetizer and the heavenly 1/2 lobster in pink seafood sauce (w giant shrimp and scallops therein). Multi Bene!
The seafood pasta special (featuring a whole lobster, scallops, mussels, and shrimp) was fantastic and HUGE! We are both big eaters and we still opted to share it, and they very generously plated it individually for us (including a split-down-the-middle lobster), which was a really nice touch in the service. The only thing I'd critique is - bring back the gnocchi in lemon cream sauce for the regular menu! We had it as the appetizer special and were reminded of what we were missing.
Found this restaurant online. Lovely atmosphere, great food, nice Birthday environment. Would definitely recommend to others. No problem with seating mid week, plenty of attention from wait staff. We ordered lobster risotto, lamb special and mussels for an appetizer. Wine was very reasonable. Would recommend to others.
Very friendly reception. Homey. Food was mainstream higher end Italian (not red sauce on pasta) and done well
Excellent menu with something for everyone. Both of us enjoyed our choices. The pasta with tuna is a very tasty dish as is the seafood risotto.
Their wine list is noteworthy with a range of prices.
We are regulars here at the Geranio because of their Osso Bucco. It's so good and orders placed before 7pm get 10% discount!
I would just like to thank Mr. Rodger, he was outstanding and very friendly. He make the night more than wonder. The food was great and would love to go back. I can honestly say him alone really put the cherry on top! Thank-you again!
We dined at Geranio with friends and family. It was a purely social occasion to get together with my nephew and a French exchange student he and his wife were hosting for a few weeks. The service was good and attentive. The food was good but the menu a bit outdated and tired. A refreshed menu would go a long way to make us want to return soon.
