We had a problem that prevented us from going to our usual Christmas celebration near Boston, so we made reservations at this lovely little restaurant near where we live. It was a romantic dininer for two, the service was impeccable with a measure of charm besides. We really enjoyed the atmosphere. The restaurant is small, but the food was delicious, every single dish was prepared perfectly. The bubbly was a lovely way to start the meal before we had even ordered. We had a wonderful afternoon at Gentleman Farmer! We both have already recommended it to friends, all of whom are downtown foodies. Kudos, Gentleman Farmer!
This place is really amazing! Only 10 feet wide and seats only 20 people. 3 cooks in a miniscule kitchen and one person handling the front of the house. The food was incredibly fresh and delicious with an artisinal flair. The wine list was surprisingly good and rounded out the meal very well.
We went to Gentleman Farmer for Christmas Eve dinner. There were five of us and they welcomed us warmly and had the table ready. Service was prompt but not intrusive. The waiter was friendly and helpful. The space is small and intimate with a row of tables along one wall. The banquettes were elegant black velvet and the decor is simple but elegant and candlelit/romantic lighting. We all did the tasting menu and the onion soup was one of the most delicious I’ve had. The country pate was amazing, the octopus perfectly cooked and the roasted cauliflower out of this world. We all loved our mains. The food is farm to table and featured duck, bison, rabbit and salmon among other things. My son had the smoked duck breast that was heavenly. The bison steak was superb and the venison my husband said was also very tender and delicious. Great curated wine list. I’ll definitely go back. Well worth the tab!!
All of the food was delicious, we had the octopus appetizer to start, which was cooked perfectly. For our entrees, I had the smoked duck and my boyfriend had the bison steak and both were prepared well and tasted delicious. It is a small place and very intimate. I highly recommend.
This was our 2nd time at Gentleman Farmer. We were once again impressed by their food and ambience. The lighting at the venue was set low with candle lights, and the mood is SUPER romantic. It is absolutely a place that you would want to come with special someone. We had bison steak and boar chop. Both plates were solid from the taste perspective. The boar meat practically fell off from the bone as soon as I cut into with a knife. Very tender. The accompanying verde sauce added freshness to the meal. Their chocolate soufflé is not overly sweet because the chocolate is high quality. They probably wanted the cacao taste to come forward before sugar. Sooooo thoughtful and sooooo French. The vanilla ice cream took the sweet role on the nice closing wrap of the dinner. The wine that we chose were comforting, and did not compete with the food, which we very much appreciated. I was practically melting by the deliciousness of the dining experience when exiting out the door. What else can I say about this beautiful and charming place in LES other than that we will absolutely keep coming back.
Took my 16 year old nephew for his first “game” dining experience. He enjoyed the venison and I had the bison - both delicious. The curried escargot starter was unique and enjoyable. Not many places in NYC with venison, bison and rabbit on the regular menu. A tiny place with 22 seats, largely a row of tables along a wall. Very pleasant experience and a lovely meal.

I came here for the Thanksgiving Day lunch. Since the restaurant seats only 20 people, be sure to reserve in advance. The prix fixe menu had more than usual number of options and included a glass of hard cider. I had the seared scallop, followed by the bison steak with vegetables, and ended the meal with the crème brulee. The service was professional and courteous. Due to the small size of the place, when it gets crowded, I think it can get very noisy.
It’s been awhile since I’ve been wow’d by a dining experience and I must say that Gentleman Farmer exceeded all of my expectations. I came across this place as a recommendation from FB when I asked friends for a nice restaurant to take my boyfriend on his birthday. I wanted a charming, date like atmosphere where we could hear each other speak, and a place where the menu and food presentation felt thought out.
As we approached the Lower East Side location, it was so unassuming on the outside that we actually ended up going into a different establishment next door to ask where it was. Just a few doors down from where we were, we entered Gentleman Farmer and were greeted by Charlotte, a very sweet young woman who would also be our waitress. The space is dimly lit and very small, stretching out like a railroad style apartment. The tables are close enough so that if the party next to you happens to be loud, conversations will overlap. Everyone who was there while we dined spoke softly however, so that wasn’t a problem.
From the menu we ended up ordering the roasted cauliflower appetizer, tournedos rossini (beef filet mignon), seared codfish, and for dessert, the creme brule and pear tart respectively. EVERYTHING that came to our table looked like a work of art. But more importantly, each dish offered a range of delicious flavors that had both of us feeling like we got more than we asked for. Of all the items we ordered, the filet mignon was hands down the best. The meat was so soft and succulent that it cut like a hot knife through butter, and the foie gras was better than any that I tasted when I actually went to Paris. Also, the way in which they are stacked together allows you to eat both in the same bite, which combine some really amazing flavors.
1 appetizer, 2 entrees, 2 desserts, and 2 drinks came to around $120. Very well worth it for the food and the entire experience!
This was my second time at this restaurant. The first time was nothing short of amazing, especially the food, which is why I was eager to bring my foodie friends to try it. Unfortunately, the restaurant didn't live up to what it had been once before. The food was just okay; it all felt like it was "assembled" as opposed to "crafted" like my first time. Service was good, and ambiance was great, but the food really drove the overall experience way down.
It is with a heavy heart that I say that I will never go back to eat there.
The restaurant was tiny and we were sat at a table that should not even exist. It was behind seats and between them and our table was about 6 “, so all the staff and customers would bump us. I said l did not want to sit there but we were told that was only 2 top available when there were others . After saying I was leaving they moved us to another table, that is just poor. There are only 16 seats here and you would think service would be quick, wrong 30 minutes and over hour for main course.
Food was average and service same. Don’t understand the reviews here on open table.
An amazing meal! We went for my wife's birthday (she wanted farm-table food). The location is small, like really small. Make a reservation! I am so glad I did.
We got there, and every table was full. We had to wait outside for about 5 minutes, there is no indoor waiting area. We were promptly seated, and like any small restaurant you are almost sharing a table with the people next to you.
They serve you bread, butter and a pepper medley after you order, and if you like hard bread, it is great. Very fresh.
We followed that up with the Scallops and Foie Gras. The absolute best scallops I have ever had. The person right next to us said the same thing. My wife and I couldn't believe it.
She ordered the beef tenderloin, which was great! Cooked rare, as per the chef's recommendation. I had a few bites and really enjoyed it. I ordered the rabbit (I have always wanted to try it.) I was impressed. Definitely will order rabbit again if it tastes like that everywhere. The pesto mash potatoes were incredible, I could have passed on the beans, a little to crisp as were my wife's asparagus.
Overall, incredible food that should be tried by everyone at least once.
Fabulous experience! Young professional couple; Friday night date. Rarely do I write reviews but this experience was a must to comment. Cute and cozy restaurant with a mix of romance and fun vibe all in one. Food is different, French rustic, but not too far left field for the average Joe.
For appetizers we had the scallops and tartar both delicious. Scallops perfectly done and I'm not a tartar fan but ordered from a recommendation and glad we did.
Boar and Rabbit for main course. My date promised to share the rabbit with me but wouldn't after her first bite.. ha ha. Both perfectly done. Amazing doesn't do the rabbit justice and the sides for both as well.
Wine went very well with dinner! Already trying to find it in local stores.

Tiny place on the LES, maybe 10 tables tops. Food is innovative and very well prepped. French influenced cuisine. Both bison and tuna tatars are outstanding. Braised rabbit and mushroom ravioli are very good. Wine list is small but quite varied (FR, IT, US, SP) with both hi and avg priced bottles. Ambiance is LES...fits the area. Few patrons on this late August Friday making the experience pretty pleasant. Could potentially get irritatingly loud and tight when full. Service is adequate. Worth the trip.
I don't know exactly what I was expecting, but Gentleman Farmer went above and beyond anything I thought I wanted. The braised rabbit was absolute perfection; the flavor, consistency, fall-off-the-bone-ness of the meal was immaculate. The bison tartare had "the perfect caper ratio," according to my discerning boyfriend. The creme brûlée topped everything off with a sweet and lingering taste. I can't stop raving about this meal.
