Food was excellent : innovative and tasty. Portion size are more than adequate. Wine list is extensive and wine by the glass was excellent. Restaurant is very small but cozy. Definitely recommended for the unusual dishes and great execution
We went there on a Thursday because it was a byob restaurant and found out that their corking fee was only free on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays and they charge $25 on other days. That absurd price soured our evening.
Took a chance based on the Open Table recommendation and was pleasantly surprised. The menu was great but going to have to return since we couldn’t very well order one of everything. What we did have was amazing. Perfectly done scallops, curried snails and the short ribs just melted in the mouth.
I am almost reluctant to write this, since this is a very intimate venue, and I'd hate to see it become impossible to get a table, but, in all honesty, this was one of the best meals we've had in NYC and my wife and I visit at least 3 times per month. Excellent off the beaten track dishes (the Boar chop was great) and great service. This place has my highest recommendation.
Fantastic start to a wonderful evening. Charming staff and cozy dining. Food was delicious.
Yes with a few "flags" ie if its crowded it might not be so great; it needs a really good cleaning job and something done with dreary décor. One thing to be dark and cozy, another to be dreary. Appearance from street awful - even scary. Saw 3 couples come up during time there, studious look on faces then iphones up and they were off to somewhere else. Can't even read the sign, the #40 is on a door next to restaurant...confusing. Doorway is derelict looking. Unclean odor sitting in window. Didn't want to touch anything and glad I didn't need restroom! Surprised French restaurant doesn't offer Pastis nor cheese plate. Winter menu online still, indicated cheese plate. Yes, food was very good - but not over top and I'm not sure $200 worth (includes one cocktail, one beer, one wine, and tip). Are we spoiled or too fussy? No, I think we are not so Bohemian!!
Small place, great food and service!
Intimate setting with limited seating - perfect for a special date night. If you enjoy conversations with fellow diners, this is one for you - it's almost impossible to not speak to those seated next to you due to the nature of the setup.
Food was great, excellent service, we'll be back!
Excellent food and very friendly service - thanks!
Great date spot
Great intimate restaurant
Delicious meat cuts
Don’t think it’s for vegans
Ce restaurant est un restaurant gastronomique tout ce que nous avons goûté était excellent entrées plats et desserts. Le patron et les cuisiniers sont très sympathique. La salle est simple agréable et très intime. Excellent souvenir
I would have given a higher rating for the food, but the boar was so awesome that the other dishes, which were also very very good, were slightly diminished by comparison.
Gentlemen Farmer is a tiny little restaurant with a great menu featuring delicious spins on classic French dishes. Everything we had was phenomenal, but make sure you try the Bison Tartare, which was a total standout. My tournedos of filet with foie gras was also a delight.
Our server, Oscar, was very attentive and personable. He knew the menu inside and out, and made us feel very welcome and looked after. He also did a wonderful job of diplomatically handling the very high maintenance group of three guests seated near us. A real pro.
If I have any complaint, it’s that the tabletops are finished with a slick, high-gloss and they are slightly convex (or at least ours was). This led to water and wine glasses going for a slide several times, and at one point my water glass took an unassisted nose dive off the table and onto the floor where it shattered. Not a deal breaker by any means, but a different finish or at least a coaster would be nice.
Overall, I highly recommend this place for the great food, great service, and lovely wine list. Will be back.
Don’t let the extremely small restaurant deter you from booking a reservation and squeezing your way through other dinner guests for a seat. The Gentleman Farmer has an incredible menu of in-season options and incredible service. We couldn’t stop raving about how amazing the food was, and can’t wait to go back.
Great small and quiet place to grab a dinner. Food was delicious.
The neighborhood is a little sketchy but once you walk in and start eating, you forget where you are.
I'd definitely eat here again.
Food was fantastic!
Rude and unfriendly from the the moment of arriving till the end. Really surprised
My husband and I had quality meal. We will be back soon.
Nice spot to have a nice quiet dinner. It can get a little cramped but it’s NYC.
Good appetizers, great wine, nice service. Our main was awful. We ordered the boar chop and it was extremely dry and flavorless. This was a huge miss that was very disappointing. Other than that the food and experience were fine.
Was excited to try out this cozy little spot. Waiter was friendly but then was a mess otherwise. He forgot our drinks, then our appetizer and placed an order in for the wrong item and then blamed it on my friend. The steak I ordered medium rare was blue. At that point I didn’t feel like saying something yet again. I hate even having to complain at all at a restaurant. So disappointed.
Very intimate, interesting menu, all dishes had plenty of flavor and great service.
Gentleman Farmer is the coziest and most romantic restaurant on the Lower East Side. I really enjoyed the ambiance and the delicious food. The service was very welcoming and friendly. Such a perfect date night spot.
Didn’t realize the space was so small till I got there but made the atmosphere cozy. The staff was amazing and the food was amazing.
The food is exceptional and the service was amazing! This is the second time I’ve been there and I’ll be back soon!
FABULOUS. We are thrilled to have found this Farm to Table with an exceptional chef and staff. Truly a memorable meal and we will be back many times. The way it should be.
So much charm in this gem of a restaurant with an inspired group in the kitchen making creative and comforting French inspired global food.
Everything very rich and over cooked :(
Love the menu and overall ambience but the LES location is a little tight (the one on Myrtle Ave is so much more spacious and relaxed). Am big game fan so having venison, rabbit, boar was a big draw for my husband and me.
The Gentleman Farmer is very small but very cozy. The food was amazing the waitress was lovely and patient with great suggestions. I highly recommend the Gentleman Farmer!
Great food in a relaxed cozy environment
What a gastronomic experience. This has got to be one of the top 5 meals I've had in NYC since I've been living here for 3 years. Everything was delicious - I wouldn't change a thing. The restaurant is about the side of a NYC studio apartment - tiny, and seats probably 20 people max at any given time, which adds to the intimacy of the restaurant. If you are a larger than average human, sitting here for a multi course meal might be uncomfortable. I'm used to be in close quarters with people because NYC, but this was like, really close. Still, enjoyable, intimate, food was great, and so was the service. I'd definitely come back here again. It's more a romantic spot though, with the closeness and dim lights. Great for a date.
Came here after reading about it in the TimeOutNY Undateables section. Food was great but we were a party of three and they squished us at a 2-top right by the door in order to save tables for other reservations. Made for a very tight eating situation but the food was great.
I love this small cozy restaurant we’ve been regular guests and view their intimate and close space as a perk. The tourists who were sitting next to us and couldn’t manage the close quarters unfortunately sucked up the servers attention for the first half hour of our meal.
We had the excellent beet salad with burrata, the mushroom fondue and the mushroom ravioli all were excellent and the chocolate soufflé was the perfect ending.
Great menu and delicious. Really chill vibe. I've been there a couple times, both times with a party of 6 or more. Both times was great service. The food is very good and diverse. Strong recc for a date night as well.
Very small and tight. Good service and food.
Everything we ordered was fantastic! Mostly from the server’s recommendations. Our guests were blown away. It was that delicious.
Had an amazing experience. Food was excellent and the staffs attention to our needs. Our first time visiting Gentleman Farmer and exceeded our expectations. Staff did not rush us out after we finished dinner. Staff could not have been nicer. Very intimate setting.
Beautiful place for a birthday dinner. ✨
