Gennaro's 5 North Square - Permanently Closed Ratings and Reviews
The ambiance is great, and the menu and service are good, but my girlfriend ran into a strange problem with her food: her pasta dish was full of shell fragments. She ordered the pasta dish off of the specials menu, knowing that it came with shellfish (mussels, I believe). When the server brought our meals, my girlfriend was surprised to see that the shellfish were still in their shells, and the shells had been handled roughly and bits and pieces had broken off into the surrounding pasta. The result was that she was pulling little shell pieces out of her pasta and her mouth with every bite. We told the waitress, who told the chef, but that was the last we heard of it. We didn't press the issue, but a visit from the chef or manager would have been a good gesture. They have a vegan menu, which is great if you or a dining companion is vegetarian/vegan.
I always like to try a new restaurant in the North End when I come to Boston once a year. Gennaro's 5 North Square was very good, but I can't say it was outstanding. The ravioli was delicious and so was the recommended bread pudding for dessert, but I think they may have been a little short handed this Saturday night. There was a large party that was seated nearby which was a little unexpected for a cozy, romantic restaurant. My husband and I sat upstairs in a lovely appointed room near a window (although we had to move the table a little bit since my husband's chair was very close to the stairwell). Service was a little slow, waiter forgot about my martini, another server brought the wrong salad...but , they were very apologetic. Gennaro's is situated in a quaint little area near Paul Revere's home. The North End is a great place to walk around after a nice dinner. I would give Gennaro's another try on another night that wasn't so busy.
Sweet gentleman host seated us in the bar until our table for two by the window was ready. He kept checking in with us. Bartender made us his own version of an espresso martini...it was delicious! Our meals (butternut squash ravioli and gluten-free pasta with white wine clam sauce) were excellent. Service is rated a three because our server was flaky and forgot to come back after HE asked if we wanted Parmesan cheese, and it took a while to get his attention for the check...and we were the last guests in the room. I would still go here again.
We had an early 6:30 reservation to celebrate two family birthdays here and had a really nice time. Our cozy table in the window was wonderful for a rainy fall night. The meals were well portioned, not overwhelming. The butternut squash ravioli was the best I have ever had. The wait staff were very attentive and extremely accommodating of one family member's physical disability . I would recommend Gennaro's and look forward to coming back.
We thoroughly enjoyed the setting, the service and the atmosphere and the food was absolutely outstanding. Our Server was knowledgeable about the menu and prompt. I would highly recommend Gennaro's 5 North as an outstanding venue for the location in the North End and for the food and atmosphere.
This was our go to place in the North End. We hadn't been here though for at least a year. Very disappointing. I had read a recent review on another site that was negative and dismissed it because we had some excellent meals there in the past, well that negative review was spot on. i became suspicious when i asked for anchovies on the cesear salad and the server looked at me like i had asked the strangest thing. I order linguini with clams. the first time it came to the table it was cold with no broth. The rest of our party had also been served they finally brought my dish back 10 minutes later- this time it was hot and had a nice broth but was salty as all get out. My husband got the Sunday Gravy which was good. Our friend order a ravioli special the serving looked like it should have been an app and not a main course. The server had mentioned the owner chef was away in Italy. i don't k ow who is running the kitchen but i won't be coming back anytime soon. Big disappointment.
Absolutely wonderful...my special lady and I were enjoying a weekend getaway and this was the perfect start to the evening. My request for a quiet table was honored with a cozy location set apart from everyone and by the window overlooking the square. The food was excellent as was our waiter who was very accommodating and brought us a complimentary limoncello at the end of the night. It was simply magical..
We were looking forward to dining at Gennaro's based on the research I had done in finding the right combination of location, quality and service in Boston's North End.
We arrived fairly early and were seated upstairs. Beautiful decor; very intimate. The waiter was at our table promptly and soon after took our orders. Two of us were served our wine and we waited for the martini. After two requests into the 40 min wait, it finally arrived with no apology. The calamari took about 20 mins to hit our table and dinner just over an hour after ordering and asking for a status. Of our meals. Again, no apologies for the delay. Mind you when we arrived there were only two other tables occupied.
The food was very good, especially the pasta. Some of the best I have had.
Pros: Location, atmosphere and the food quality of our our dinners
Cons: Service was some of the worst I have experienced in many years, the focaccia bread was a bit on the stale side
Would I return? Unlikely.
Our third time there. The first time my wife and I went, we knew we'd be back and we'd be bringing company. Plus, we're vegan, which is admittedly difficult to accommodate with things like fresh pasta. The following two visits had our guests equally as impressed. We also like it because it's off the main drag in the North End, so it's quieter than most of the other restaurants around there.
Food was excellent and the vegan options were very good. They should definitely advertise their vegan menu much more as the options for vegans and vegetarians in the north end is limited. Service was a little slow, but very friendly. The AC on the second floor was lacking a bit. Would definitely return again.
Managed to snag a table at this North End gem the day before heading up to Boston. Which was fortunate, because it is extremely popular and the North End in Boston, in general, on a Saturday night in the Summer is jam-packed with people going to the restaurants that dominate the scene there.
Gennaro's is my favorite type of place. Really a solid restaurant without being too pretentious or trendy, etc.
The emphasis is on the food. I had a prosciutto and fig with shaved Parmesan cheese on it for an appetizer. Black ink risotto with shrimp, calamari and baby clams for an entree. Both were specials. Both were about two of the best and most interesting dishes I have had in a long while.
Would highly recommend this place.
Food was great, consistent with what we had heard. Service was oddly off the mark: Upon arrival staff unaware of OpenTable made request for upstairs seating, initial contact with waitstaff at table delayed, wrong wine presented at table, wrong wine included on bill. Just an odd sequence of errors, all that happen from time to time but usually not all at the same meal. So recommend with concerns for whether this is now normal Gennaro normal.
