Shrimp Fried Rice
The chef was not entertaining and communicating well.
The meat was not cooked to the level that was requested, also there was no difference between the meat NY Strip/T Bone or Halal vs non Halal.
Our sushi took over an hour and was less than appetizing when we received it. It was soaked in spicy mayo and the tuna looked like it was ground tuna. We had another person join on us who got a non-sushi meal and was done eating before ours even arrived at the table. Poor service as well.
I was impressed by their Covid safety measures- temps and contact tracing numbers taken upon entry, but overall I was disappointed. The chef did very little beyond cooking in front of us. The main reason I chose this experience was to have a bit more than a meal. This paled in comparison to other such hibachi dining experiences at other Japanese steakhouses. Go elsewhere.
The overall experience was great! It was our anniversary so we got extra yummy food!
our overall experience was good. however, we were sat by another family (we were sharing around the grill) which was very unpleasant experience. It was my birthday celebration and this other family ruined for me.
The chef was just okay (I wish he had been delivered more), the food excellent, the environment great.
Our server was incredibly rude and when we inquired about things, she made us feel that we were troubling her. My mom asked for a frozen drink, which our server stated they do not make. She then asked for a glass of sweet red wine and was told they do not have that, and there really are very few sweet reds. At no time did she offer another suggestion. My mom ended up getting water (and she asked 2x for lemons, which she never received.) When we received our bill, we asked about our dessert. We were told that the dessert was popcorn and that it is not made on the grill in front of us on the weekend. We asked what we would get for dessert, since it is included with dinner, and she stated that she could bring us some popcorn from the back if we really wanted it. We did. Also our soup was served mid way through the meal, which we thought was odd.
The food was serious but the service awful. Even knowing that the manager did not stop by. Our cook helped more the the waitress. We never got popcorn, we never got the sushi we ordered. We got 1 water refill even though it was a bus boy . we asked 6 times for water. Nothing was done to fix how bad the service was.
First time here and it was much better than I expected. Very nice decor and also very clean which is not always the case at hibachi places. Our service was top notch even with the fact the restaurant was very busy. Food was good my only complaint is the Fried Rice. Very bland and boring not much seasoning. I feel like if they had better garlic butter the food would be phenomenal. Fortunately the yum yum sauce fixed the rice issue. That being said our steaks were cooked well and the sushi was outstanding. A manager even checked in on us throughout our meal which was a nice touch. Well done we will be returning soon.
We were celebrating my moms bday which was in January but since it was not today they didn’t do anything special.... kinda disappointed.
One in our party was allergic to shellfish. Cook didn’t know what to do. Overcooked scallops. Seemed very confused. We felt rushed.
Food was over cooked and suffered from too much salt. chefs need to be more aware of proper seasoning.
Waitress was very nice but inattentive- never asked for second drink - but there were many employees in restaurant - could not get their attention because they were all chatting rather than working -literally 5-6 of them with 4-5 patrons at about 5 pm
Fixtures need dusting
Onion soup good
Steak and chicken pretty good
Too bad. Great location and concept
Won’t be back
The restaurant was very busy on Sunday and we did have to wait a while for our waitress and hibachi chef but the manager working that night was constantly checking on us to make sure things are running smoothly which we very much appreciated. Wonderful staff, amazing food, I would recommend anybody to visit Genji at least once!
Waited 4 hrs for mediocre food
Great food and great hibachi chef. He was funny and creative.
It was very smelly my clothes stunk when leaving. They do not offer the popcorn on Friday or Saturday. And my filet was fatty. I was not impressed and will not be returning
everything was good from the food to the service, it was no one there so it was fast service! it was a good and a bad thing especially if your a social person! my only issues was the my rice was not good and that was I big part of the experience, my popcorn had a over taking burnt taste! but honestly the two thing are minor my steak was perfect! Soulemate drink was great too!!!!!
Everything was very good. The scallops could of been cooked more. The service was excellent. I wish they had better ventilation because when you get to your car, all you smell is the restaurant.
The food was pretty good. The service was awful. We had a patty of 8 and the server never checked on us, refilled our waters, gave us takeout boxes....disappointing!
Our server was great. They were definitely understaffed. He was running around doing his best. Sushi was good, we got a side of scallops and I was not impressed with the presentation at all.
Food was great and our teppanyaki chef was awesome!
Please turn up the heat a bit before you open so its warm when we sit down. We kept our winter coats on the entire time during lunch. . We always go at noon on Sundays and its freezing (we never took our coats off). Next time, we will come later in the afternoon.
Food is always good. I feel like too much butter though. Could def use less garlic butter.
I would recommend Genji because the food is descent and reasonably priced for a Japanese steakhouse. However they close early and if you are not there over and hour before they close they won’t sit you at the habachi grill and you sit in a booth, the booths are so so and remind you of a Denny’s. If you are use to a Benihana meal this will be comparable but not as good, also the drinks are pretty weak.
Went for my birthday..service was excellent, food was delicious and abundant! My new favorite restaurant!!
Dinner took a lot longer than usual & food was a bit overcooked. Our previous experiences at Genji have been great though.
Poor service. Good food. Had better experience here before.
We celebrated a birthday and really appreciated the 50% off the birthday dinner. The food was delicious and very generous portions. The areas of improvement included 1) It took a very long time before someone greeted us at the table and bring our drinks. 2) The menu didn't explain the difference between the two types of entree categories. 3) The Hibachi Vegetables include Tofu but, the menu didn't list Tofu. That was very important and big bonus for a vegetarian. I would recommend updating the menu. 4) Our clothes and coats reeked of food and oil smell. We had to air out our coats and eventually dry clean/wash the smell out. They need way better ventilation.
Food was very bland and not even cooked.. peas in the “fried rice” were still frozen.. horrible chewy chicken and the worst smelling shrimp and lobster ever.. this place sucks at best - best thing was the ginger dressing on the salad .. 100 bucks down the drain - go to Benihana- even though it’s commercial, it’s much better ..
Unfortunately I would NOT recommend this to a friend or client. I have been going to Genji in Novi for a couple of years now and this experience was incredibly disappointing and frankly upsetting.!
The service of the meal that was very disconnected (Soup and Salad arrived while the Chef was at the table starting to serve us the main course). The Chef did NOT season anything. There were no sauces provided until we asked for them (yum-yum and ginger sauce). After a second request we were given the WHOLE dispenser to serve ourselves. For the cost there is NO WAY this should be Self Serve. Toward the end of the meal the other family at our table asked about dishes to put the sauces in; the Chef Stormed Off - with meat on the grill - to get some. When he returned we all had to fill our own dishes!
In addition to not being able to cook... the Chef (Riley) was unable to provide any entertainment. He LOVED to "drop a beat" but that was it. No flaming volcano, no Saki, no effort, no personality. He barely even talked to us! No Interaction at all! At the very end he tried to toss some wrapped pieces of wood but wasn't even able to do that!
Upon leaving the Restaurant, we talked to the Manager that offered the following explanation, "he shouldn't have done that - we'll have to train him more. Sorry". That was it! No compensation for the Self Serve nature of our dinner. Normally, after one bad experience I wouldn't complain but this was complete departure of what Genji used to be with no real concern from Management. Won't be back for a long time, if ever.
The food was terrible and our waitress never came back after she gave us our salads and soup. Won’t be going back again...
Our service was extremely poor, we had to wait 45 minutes for a cook to come and when he finally did come, he was very slow. I won’t be back.
Birthday but didn’t get ice cream cuz it was the weekend or something i don’t know
We went for the sushi lunch bar..it 2as really good!!
Disappointed. We love this place. Came for a family bday just to find out that they won't take discount on a Fri or Sat evening. We were out of town on the actual day. Very very disappointed.
Terrible from beginning to end. Asked for a quiet table, got sat at a very high hibachi table with the wrong type of chairs, table top was about 4 inches under my chin! Asked to move to a new spot, and hostess lost all interest in helping, had to move the menus myself. Tables were not set with normal items like soy sauce, had to ask for that. Waiter was terrible, literally could not have cared less about our party. And it was a party, the Finance Team Holiday party. Food took extremely like, like an hour for fried rice, not kidding. And wasn't served all at the same time, so some people were done eating before other people even got their food! Horrible experience from start to finish, will NEVER go there again.
We had the hibachi table with just the 2 of us !
So we essentially had a private chef for my birthday dinner. Loved the chilled metal martini glass.
The onion soup was outstanding.
Our server was very pleasant & efficient she made a great team with the chef.
Komasi (not his real name I'm sure but that was the name on his Toque), was very pleasant and did an awesome job.
Our chef was very nice but appeared that he hadn’t washed his hands. Nails were dirty and just that he was disheveled.
The food is always great at Genji and the Hibachi style eating is fun. The only problem was the service. Our waitress seemed to disappear periodically and we didn't get water refills or checked on for a while. Not sure what was going on.
Sashimi Dinner was fantastic - truth be told, the fish here is always top-shelf. We also ordered Hibachi, one Filet, one scallops, one salmon. The soup, salad and vegetables were all good. The fried rice was also very tasty. The filet and salmon were met with diners' satisfaction. The scallops were a bit fishy-tasting and almost every bite had a grain of sand; the scallops were removed from the bill without incident. I'm sure we will return for another meal. Note: birthday dinners (50% off) is not good on Friday or Saturday, unless it's the actual birthday-date.
