My wife and I chose the Generals Restaurant to celebrate our 7th wedding anniversary, because of the buildings history and what we have heard and read about it. What we got was so much more. the people, the food, the ambiance the decor, it gave us so much more that we could imagine. we enjoyed it so much that we plan to come back later this summer and stay at the Desoto House and partake in the whole experience. The food was absolutely delicious, the service was 5 star, the ambiance was perfect. everyone we met, went beyond to help us. Thank You and we will see you later this summer.
Walleye wasn't anything special, husband really enjoyed his pasta. Sat next to small birthday gathering so was a bit louder than I hoped but not unbearable. Cheesecake was excellent!
The steak I have to say was not a great cut very fatty for a sirloin and the taste was not out of this world very bland . But we had an autistic child and the service to make his dinner perfect was outstanding.
The food was just not as upscale as we usually look for in a restaurant.
The place was lovely and the staff was friendly and accommodating and although the food was good, we just cant rave about it.
I loved the set up of this restaurant. The hotel is gorgeous and the food was great for the price. The staff was very friendly.
Ann the hostess was delightful! Jeff our waiter was great and very professional while being fun! Food was fabulous!
Food was fantastic. Staff was very knowledgeable and friendly. I will definitely be a repeat customer!
Food was very good
Service was a little slow to start but improved
Nice wines on the special for wine lovers weekend
Consistant . Great staff. Steaks and seafood dishes excellent. Have tried them all. Must try the blue cheese soup.
I made this reservation a month in advance and confirmed my request for a specific server directly with the restaurant. We arrived after driving through a blizzard on bad roads because we had such a great time last time and didn't want to cancel. Checked in, the hostess didn't ask our name after we said we had a reservation. Okay.... we get seated. The place is empty. There were 3 other tables there. We were given our server, Lindsey, who was NOT the server we requested and confirmed with the restaurant before hand. I didn't even see our server there. Fine, maybe he didn't come in. Lindsey came over, suggested a wine and said she'd be right back to take our drink order. After 22 minutes and no sign of Lindsey in the empty restaurant, only 2 other tables at that point, we left. Horrible experience because of a horrible server. We left and went to the Goldmoor. Food was great, as was the service. We will NOT be back to The General's on our next visit.
We love Generals. The filet is amazing.
First, I have been here before and really liked it, not as much this time, after waiting 15 minutes to get a drink after being seated, we then ordered. It took another half hour to get our appetizers once we talked to the matre d. The whole dinning experience took almost 2 hours. They did however comp our drinks
The hostess was sweet and funny! Our waiter Jeff was fantastic. Food was great, and reasonably priced! Will definitely return! We came for our anniversary and we were given a complimentary glass of champagne and we were able to keep the glasses!
I would not go here again, service was VERY slow, the food was not good at all and I did not get my full order.
Even getting check to leave was a long drawn out process.
One of my favorite restaurant in Galena. Service was great and the food was very good.
This was a night to remember! From a quiet drink at the bar, to the tour of the haunted storage area by Eric, to our totally amazing server (so sorry I forgot your name!) Everyone took such good care of us. You must have the pretzel encrusted walleye, best fish I've ever had!!!!! Thank you for a very special night!!!!
We were there for the Night of the Luminaria. We had reservations for the General restaurant, but first they tried to seat us in the Courtyard. Then they told us we had to wait, even though we had a reservation and there were only about four tables occupied in that area in the restaurant. Then when we were finally sat we had to wait about 15 minutes before anyone came over, that was only because I walked to the hostess stand to inquire about a server, or we may have had to wait longer. Also when we were finished with dinner, we ordered a dessert, then the waitress brought the check over before the dessert. Come to find out the dessert was out and the waitress had to adjust the bill, not the most professional for anyone who has worked in the business. The food was good, but the service was severely lacking that night. We come to Galena every year for the Night of the Luminaria, and with many other food options to choose from, we will probably avoid going back here.
Great place to eat! Everyone was so nice. The food was great. Ambiance of the Christmas tree in the courtyard!
We enjoyed two meals at Generals during our short stay in Galena, and plan to return again soon!
Thanksgiving meal was a bust. Very crowded. Long lines to check in and confusion about which host to check-in with. Upstairs or downstairs? Then the meal felt very rushed. To top it off, they ran out of mashed potatoes, salmon, pumpkin pie and coffee! All that for $80! Thanks General 🤢
terrific decor. our server was outstanding. the food was enjoyable and everyone was pleased. WE will be back. Thanks
The waitress was rushed & then was rude because of it. We felt like we were a bother. My husband was ordering, she interrupted and barked an order to another waitstaff person. Food was delicious.
Great food romantic awesome service loved the dessert cart
excellent food; service a bit slow; waiter very attentive and helpful
Short staffed that evening made for lengthy wait for drink refills and table busing.
Great food, great service and great location! Can’t wait to go back!
We really enjoyed our meal. The food, service and atmosphere were excellent and the price was reasonable. As hotel guests we received complementary cocktails and appetizer, which was a very nice perk. Thank you!
We had a large group and they were able to accommodate us on short notice. Food was decent.
Met with two girlfriends for dinner. Casual fine dining. Nice atmosphere. The filet was superb. Cooked exactly to order. The Cabernet demi-glaze was excellent. I had some sautéed mushrooms added as well. Yum. Fresh steamed vegetables were great. You get two sides with your main entree, and a fabulous loaf of warm bread served with herbed butter. There are plenty of menu options. Steak, chops, fish, and pasta dishes. Also some vegetarian and gluten free options. Service was great. Kim was very knowledgeable about the menu, and checked on us periodically, without being intrusive. This is a hidden gem worth seeking out. I felt it was a good value for the high quality.
Had a great 40th anniversary celebration dinner with another couple (who were also celebrating their 40th). Food was wonderful and the service outstanding. Our waitress was Kim and she did a fantastic job.
The General is a wonderful experience. Everything was perfect. The food unbelievable along with
the service. From the moment you arrive, you feel very welcomed. We enjoyed it so much, we
returned the next evening. And, it was just as wonderful as the evening before.
Eric, Jeff (Roberto), Liz, the whole Team at the General's (and the DeSoto) are incredibly friendly, talented, and a true joy to spend time with...a MUST stop on your visit to Galena!
Best restaurant we tried on this three night trip. More elegant than casual, but anyone would be welcomed. Only downside was they seemed a bit understaffed and at times had to wait for our wait-person. Missed deliverying soup but comped desert instead -- marvelous chocolate cake. Would definately return
We were in Galena over the weekend and decided to make reservations. We went on a Friday night and it was not busy. Really didn’t need any reservations. Server was a nice lady who gave us good service. (Again probably because they weren’t busy). My wife had the walleye and I had the stuffed chicken breast. Both were very good. I like that they serve you warm fresh bread. We also had carrot cake for dessert was was excellent. I think prices are OK but a little on the expensive side. We did not get any appetizers as we wanted to put more money into the meals. You really don’t need an appetizer. It’s in the basement of the DeSoto Hotel. No windows to look out which can give you a claustrophobic feel. If you want to get a great view go to Woodstone at Eagle Ridge. Fantastic there. Overall solid 4 stars.
Excellent dining experience. Family gathering, good food and conversation.
Great atmosphere. Pianist good but a little too loud. Could have been lower volume. Great prime rib. Very generous sizes. Good hot and visually appealing
The service was absolutely the worst. The waitress wouldn't come by for drink refills and was very inattentive. It wasn't even busy when we were there. She had 3-4 tables tops. The poor tip was reflective of her service!
We had dinner at the General. Our waitress could not describe any of the wine to me as “she didn’t drink wine”. When we asked her about the kind of cheese in the potato, she told us “the chef doesn’t tell us the recipe”. Our waitress was subpar and the other staff was shutting off the lights in other rooms and talking to the bartender from the furthest point away from him in the restaurant. I guess that was our hint to leave, even though they were not closed. Found the waitstaff to be severely lacking in professionalism and knowledge.
Excerpt from my trip journal: I think this may have been my favorite restaurant of the trip. The restaurant was set in a nineteenth century building downtown. There were several dining rooms. Only a few people were dining in mine. I could hear 1940’s jazz coming from somewhere. My martini would have been great if they hadn’t been out of Beefeater. It was still pretty good. Again, I decided to just order a couple of appetizers. I had the Wisconsin sausage and cheese and duck drumsticks. Both were great, and either could have made a full meal: there were five drumsticks and the cheese and sausage plate was huge. Again, I couldn’t finish my dinner. I also had a flight: three small glasses of selected red wines – all were really good.
Potatoes were served cold, steak was flavorless and very fatty. The waitress raved about the special that night, which we ordered, then returned to tell us it was actually not available. Asked a woman clearing the table a question and she looked at us and walked away. Not worth the money.
