Generals Ratings and Reviews
WE had a party of 8 and had great service and very good food. The atmosphere was very nice, quiet but we didn't feel like we could not enjoy each other. There was another big party and we hardly heard them. Loved the "old" brick and feeling of the DeSoto House. Would recommend to anyone.
Pricey ! Great service and ambience! Highly recommend Jeff to be your waiter ! Order the pretzel crusted walleye with baked potato and seasonal veggies ! Walleye is enough for 2 people to split the entree! Order a house salad to start your meal with French dressing ! The French is amazing !
My boyfriend and I visited Galena for a weekend, and this was our favorite meal of the trip. He had a ribeye with scallops, and said the starter bread was wonderful. I had a filet with scallops and scalloped potatoes. Our server Cory was wonderful about making sure everything I ordered was gluten free. We will definitely be back!
We had previously only had lunch here, which was very nice, so decided to try their dinner menu. We both opted for the pretzel crusted walleye which was excellent as well as the crab bisque. Service was excellent also. A lovely place to dine and we will definately return!
We visited Generals. Made a reservation but wouldn't have needed it at 6:45p. The restaurant is quiet. In the basement of the De Soto Hotel which is an old quaint place. My husband had Salmon with Raspberry sauce and I had Waleye. Both were great. They have a great desert cart but we were too full.
Took the family here for a special weekend, never again. The food here is extremely expensive for the quality. I had chicken parmesan and the chicken was tough and chewy. Others had steaks that were average. Infantry on horseback appetizer was overcooked and the "snappy" sauce tasted like bottled bbq sauce. The service was even worse than the food. The waitress disappeared frequently and rarely checked on us. I ordered crab bisque and never received it. My husband had to go to the bar to order our bottles of wine for the table. The wine was brought to our table already uncorked...no presentation or tasting. The average food and poor service came with a price tag that exceeded $300. This is not the place to go for fine dining in Galena.
The DeSoto House, where the restaurant is located as a great history and is a great example of mid-19th century architecture. Both Lincoln and Douglas gave speeches from it's balconies. The restaurant itself is cozy and looks promising, but the food wasn't as good as I'd like it to be. The steaks were OK but not great, appetizers the same. They don't allow corking your own bottles of wine and their own selection is small and poor. The wait staff was enthusiastic but seemed new and inexperienced (at least our waiter was). Despite all of that, I'd still recommend it for the ambiance and the price point wasn't too high.
My wife and I went for a special dinner offered between 5 PM and 8 PM. The special choices were a lobster and crab fettuccini entre with salad or filet mignon with two sides. You could also order off the dinner menu. They also had a singer who sounded like Frank Sinatra and sang all ofvhis hits. It was a Valentines Day offering two days early.
The General Restaurant is located in the DeSoto Hotel, an historic hotel in Galena where Lincoln and U. S. Grant stayed and gave speeches. It is steeped in history. It always amazes me how easy it is to make a reservation and secure a good table in the town is not full of weekend tourists. Our food was great, the singer too loud for me but my wife thoughtvhe was just right and thecservice a little slow simply because they did notchavecenough servers. Our server, Terrie, was running full bore all the time trying to meet everyone's needs. She did a good job all things considered. As we live locally, we eat here maybe four times a year, typically on holidays. We usually have a very enjoyable time.
Special night out with my wife. Great service, great ambiance, and enjoyed the music being played, not too loud. Very accommodating for people with food allergies.
Steak was undercooked, but were very quick to address this concern and corrected without hesitation. My pork chop was over cooked and dry and bland.
Food was ok for the price. Would be worth checking out a second time.
The General is located in the DeSoto Hotel in Galena, Il, in 1855. Both U.S. Grant and Abraham Lincoln stayed there.
Some of the original structure, including the staircase in the lobby still survives. The General is a multi room restaurant on the first floor with a quiet ambience, excellent food and great service. For Thanksgiving, they offer an outstanding buffet with seafood, turkey, fried chicken, roast beef, smoked salmon, shrimp, crab legs
Stuffing, vegetables, and a zillion different desserts as well as a chocolate fountain. We go every year ti this buffet. Reservations are needed.
Awesome food! We both had the ribeye steak. I had mine with blue cheese crumble on top and two scallops. So yummy!! We had the best server, David. He was so sincere and took very good care of us. My husband had the chocolate cheesecake for dessert and loved it !
The food--from appetizer to main dish--was excellent. It's just that we arrived early (20 minutes before reservation time). Our server was pleasant about seating us; however, my spouse overheard a fellow server complain. When our server returned to the table, we told her we would be glad to wait, that we didn't mean to cause some kind of inconvenience. (Keep in mind we were the only ones in the restaurant at the time.) She remained very pleasant. It was the other individual's attitude who put a damper on the evening.
Had a very enjoyable dinner at the Generals. My husband ordered the rack of ribs (which was huge) and I ordered the scallops which were cooked perfectly. The service was very good and the atmosphere was very charming. Our server told us the history of the De Soto House and he was very knowledgeable about the property. We are locals for over 15 years and have never been there for dinner and wish we hadn't waited so long to go there! One of the nicest restaurants in Galena. Don't pass it up!!!
There is nothing particularly bad about this place other than I just found it dull and a little under par overall. The food was acceptable but nothing stupendous. The service was acceptable but not attentive. The ambiance was old and out of date. However, the good news is that the price is also low - only about $60 for two (no alcohol).
As I have written more than a few reviews for this restaurant, it is difficult to come up with new comments. We came for the Mothers Day Brunch and knew we would not be disappointed. There were so many menu items we could not even sample some of them. There were no lines at the stations, ample seafood options including cold king crab legs large shrimp, smoked salmon. Carved beef and turkey, the usual breakfast selections, and the champaign. Order the Orange juice and you could make your own mimosas at your table. We never tire of coming here for special occasions.
The halibut that had ordered was thi, dried out and and small.
It had no flavor at all so I sent it back for the walleye. The walleye was much better but still lacked flavor. The waiter seem to lack trading and confidence but was extremely helpful. I don't blame him at all. I do however blame management. After all our issues not one did the manager stop by to apologize or see if we needed anything else.
We were very disappointed and will not return to this place.
The Generals Restaurant is located in the DeSoto Hotel in Galena ,IL. It is steeped in history as Abraham Lincoln not only stayed here but gave at least one speech from its balcony. We always go for their Thanksgiving Buffet dinner. Reservations are needed so make them weeks ahead of time. The food choices are so numerous, one needs to take small portions to get even close to sampling everything. We have also gone to the Christmas buffet. Smoked Salmon, crab legs, shrimp, roast turkey, many vegetable and salad selections are offered. There are many dessert selections and a chocolate fountain as well as unlimited champagne. The selections do not change much from year to ear which in my opinion is good. You al;ways know what will be waiting for you. We have recommended it to many of our friends.
