Food was wonderful along with the service, my wife and I will recommend to anyone!
The restaurant was closed!!! We did not have Christmas dinner. Very upset! Will never use open table again
Food was ok
Great place to eat! Had a wonderful time... Maddie was a great waitress.
Food and service was outstanding!
Maddie our server was absolutely wonderful!
The drinks were very good. My husband got the new york strip with mashed potatoes and green beans that were really good. I got the salmon with seasonal vegetables and jasmine rice. Salmon was dry but sides were really good. Our waitress Maddie was very kind and attentive.
Do to restrictions we sat at a table on the street under a tent. it was a nice night and turned out really good. My wife and I both enjoyed the bacon wrapped shrimp appetizer. Caesar salad was good too. We both had the filet which came out warm and not hot but I am sure they are trying their best to get the food up and out to the street. Our server Carrol was really nice. We would return again when going back to Galena.
Forgot to mention the bread service was really good.
Our waiter made the evening perfect. He knew the right drinks, the food and wine. Pleasant to talk to and attentive. A great meal.
Jason was our waiter. Pretzel crusted walleye was fabulous, cooked to perfection (as we're sides of fingerling potatoes and asparagus). The cheese tortellini with peas and prosciutto in garlic cream sauce was also quite delicious. Salad with raspberry vinaigrette was fresh. The creamy blue cheese soup was good, however had cut onions and celery which weren't quite tender yet from cooking. Would have preferred if that was blended with immersion blender, but that's just me. I used it to dip the fresh bread in (win-win). Split a dessert of pineapple upside down cake. Service was prompt and good. Left happy and satisfied.
In these uncertain times one never knows what a dining experience might be — especially as folks are tending to wanting to be indoors...
That said they pulled it all off. Food/atmosphere/social distancing -- all of it.
My standard always has been --- will I go back?
And the answer is yes!
The food and service was excellent! Appetizers of bacon wrapped shrimp and beef crostini were amazing. Entrees were also delicious! Chocolate cake dessert was incredible. Jeffrey W provided amazing service and was very helpful and informative on selections. A great experience!!
Scallops were over cooked and chicken with tomato pasta was bland to the taste. Great atmosphere but wish the food was better that night.
Shelby was a super friendly and professional server. The General is quaint with great food and drink selections. The blue cheese soup is a must! Absolutely delicious and they also provided the recipe. We will return and highly recommend The General when looking for dinner in downtown Galena.
We went here for a girls night out. The pasta waa good, but my friend had the scallops with rice and the rice wasn't cooked. She left hungry. It ws a lot of money for a disappointing meal. I would skip this one!
Great service, delicious food, attractive setting.
My friend and I were on a Girlfriend’s Weekend in Galen’s. We arrived late on a Rainy Friday afternoon. We quickly found out the the pandemic and rain caused restaurants to fill quickly, and although The General wasn’t our first choice we were able to get in at a reasonable time. When we arrived the hostess, Monika, apologized and said it would be a few minutes and asked us to have a seat at the bar, AND THEN TOLD THE BARTENDER THE DRINK WAS ON THE HOUSE! We honestly waited less than 10 minutes and took our drinks with us to the table. The food was fantastic! EVERYTHING was done perfectly (steaks and scallops) and the au gratin potatoes were out of this world. Our server was attentive, polite, and friendly. It was just a perfect evening! We WILL be back!
It was a birthday for my wife we had Dinner reservations and we were early. The hostess seated us immediately,we had a quaint little table. They didn’t have to put chairs together we were a party of eight .The ambience was excellent, the noise level was moderate only because of our noise. My only regret is that I am three hours away from this place,I highly recommend this Restaurant.
Our arrival in the early evening provided a very quiet and private dining experience. Saturday evening's prime rib special was wonderful and was complimented by well prepared roasted vegetables and delicious parmesan encrusted fresh bread. Service was super friendly and attentive. As for ambiance, the loved piano player seemed to be playing just for us. Actually since we were the only guests in that section of the restaurant, he was playing to an audience of two. I highly recommend Generals.
Amazing service!
We enjoyed an evening out what the an incredible dinner of prime rib, cooked & seasoned to perfection.
Our waiter's wine suggestion was perfect.
Would definitely be back if in the area.
The hostess was extremely complimentary and offered us a cocktail on the house upon arrival. We were seated at the exact time of our reservation. We both had filets. I always order mine blue which throws a lot of wait staff off. It was cooked perfectly, nicely seared on the outside and a cold center. The atmosphere was peaceful and we really enjoyed our dinner and the service.
Perfect date night. Food was amazing. Could have done without the loud Bachelorette group that was seated right next to us when we were the only people there.
We had an outstanding servier - Shelby! Everything was great!
My husband and I went to dinner for our anniversary. They had hearts and chocolates on our table and the server wished us a happy anniversary. Very thoughtful. Good menu options and good food. Great service.
Scallops were delicious. Beef bruschetta delicious.
The service, food, drinks were outstanding. Can’t wait to go back! Truly an enjoyable evening and great time
Delightful! Excellent food, good service and great atmosphere. Loved it.
We were visiting Galena for the Special Olympics Winter Games and had a delicious meal with friends at the Generals. The food was outstanding and the service and peaceful atmosphere of the restaurant made it a very pleasant experience. It’s the perfect place for a special occasion dinner or for spending time with friends. The soft music and low noise level made it easy to have a conversation. We’ll definitely be going back.
Nice place. Good food, excellent service. We will go back.
Our meal at General’s was overall excellent. We loved the walk to the basement and the ambiance, the piano player further helped. A separation between the bar area and dining room would have helped the loud patron noise from interrupting the mood. The cheese platter and bread were excellent as well as the soup/salad. The only complaint would be that our steaks were under cooked. Medium should be a pink center, not red and bloody. But, flavor was certainly there so hard to complain. Would definitely recommend and return.
We were celebrating my wife’s birthday. Mentioned this when making the reservation and to the waiter when we were seated. Food was good and served promptly. My issue was absolutely no recognition of my wife’s birthday by the hostess or waiter. I cannot recommend a restaurant that does not go a little above and beyond for a special occasion.
New Years cekebration
Family outing.
Outstanding service on a very busy weekend. All of our orders came out piping hot, and cooked to order. A festive atmosphere encouraged us to linger. One of our favorite places in Galena. It’s a hidden gem. Tucked away in the Desoto House Hotel, it is worth searching out.
Waiter forewarned us of slow service, citing the Luminaria Festival as the cause, yet we were surrounded by empty tables. We had 8 in our party and our dinner was to be a holiday gift to our Mom. One of the glasses of wine never arrived, so it was cancelled and a bottle of beer was ordered instead. We were charged for both. Mom's "medium rare" steak arrived raw inside, so we asked it to be returned to the kitchen and cooked a little longer. 20 minutes later, while we uncomfortably ate in front of my Mom so OUR food didn't get cold, the waiter brought out her now charred/burnt over-cooked, dry piece of meat. I don't know if the chef did this out of spite, but . . . The waiter seemed surprised when we complained about it. He grudgingly offered to remove that from our bill, but the mood at the table was already ruined. Merry Christmas, Mom! Very disappointed and will not return.
The Generals was a very nice, quiet place to eat. The food was wonderful, the ambiance was soothing and relaxing. The only complaint I had was that it seemed that the waitstaff was not consistent. Meaning that, my son asked our waitress if he could substitute a side/house salad in place of one side. He was told no by our waitress that they could not do that. So, he placed his order choosing something he did not care for as a side and we waited for our meals to arrive. Meanwhile, about 20 minutes later at the table directly next to us, a different waiter took that tables order and they asked him if they could substitute a side/house salad instead and his reply was "Oh yes, of course". That inconsistency really left us with a dissatisfied feeling.
We had a date night. There was no rush or extreme expectation. We arrived 30 minutes early for our reservation and was seated immediately. No problems, food was very good, service was very good, the piano player was very good. Excellent no stress night out. Will go back!
Took my parents here for their 54th Anniversary due to the wide variety of choices available. Everyone enjoyed their food and the service was good. We really appreciated that the dining room we were seated in was not loud and we were able to hear our own conversations. My only one complaint was the amount of walking needed to get to the restaurant even with the elevator but we made due.
WONDERFUL AMBIANCE. Great food. The soups are perfect, meal cooked perfectly. Delicious. Wonderful deserts.
