Delightful! Excellent food, good service and great atmosphere. Loved it.
We were visiting Galena for the Special Olympics Winter Games and had a delicious meal with friends at the Generals. The food was outstanding and the service and peaceful atmosphere of the restaurant made it a very pleasant experience. It’s the perfect place for a special occasion dinner or for spending time with friends. The soft music and low noise level made it easy to have a conversation. We’ll definitely be going back.
Nice place. Good food, excellent service. We will go back.
Our meal at General’s was overall excellent. We loved the walk to the basement and the ambiance, the piano player further helped. A separation between the bar area and dining room would have helped the loud patron noise from interrupting the mood. The cheese platter and bread were excellent as well as the soup/salad. The only complaint would be that our steaks were under cooked. Medium should be a pink center, not red and bloody. But, flavor was certainly there so hard to complain. Would definitely recommend and return.
We were celebrating my wife’s birthday. Mentioned this when making the reservation and to the waiter when we were seated. Food was good and served promptly. My issue was absolutely no recognition of my wife’s birthday by the hostess or waiter. I cannot recommend a restaurant that does not go a little above and beyond for a special occasion.
New Years cekebration
Outstanding service on a very busy weekend. All of our orders came out piping hot, and cooked to order. A festive atmosphere encouraged us to linger. One of our favorite places in Galena. It’s a hidden gem. Tucked away in the Desoto House Hotel, it is worth searching out.
Waiter forewarned us of slow service, citing the Luminaria Festival as the cause, yet we were surrounded by empty tables. We had 8 in our party and our dinner was to be a holiday gift to our Mom. One of the glasses of wine never arrived, so it was cancelled and a bottle of beer was ordered instead. We were charged for both. Mom's "medium rare" steak arrived raw inside, so we asked it to be returned to the kitchen and cooked a little longer. 20 minutes later, while we uncomfortably ate in front of my Mom so OUR food didn't get cold, the waiter brought out her now charred/burnt over-cooked, dry piece of meat. I don't know if the chef did this out of spite, but . . . The waiter seemed surprised when we complained about it. He grudgingly offered to remove that from our bill, but the mood at the table was already ruined. Merry Christmas, Mom! Very disappointed and will not return.
The Generals was a very nice, quiet place to eat. The food was wonderful, the ambiance was soothing and relaxing. The only complaint I had was that it seemed that the waitstaff was not consistent. Meaning that, my son asked our waitress if he could substitute a side/house salad in place of one side. He was told no by our waitress that they could not do that. So, he placed his order choosing something he did not care for as a side and we waited for our meals to arrive. Meanwhile, about 20 minutes later at the table directly next to us, a different waiter took that tables order and they asked him if they could substitute a side/house salad instead and his reply was "Oh yes, of course". That inconsistency really left us with a dissatisfied feeling.
We had a date night. There was no rush or extreme expectation. We arrived 30 minutes early for our reservation and was seated immediately. No problems, food was very good, service was very good, the piano player was very good. Excellent no stress night out. Will go back!
Took my parents here for their 54th Anniversary due to the wide variety of choices available. Everyone enjoyed their food and the service was good. We really appreciated that the dining room we were seated in was not loud and we were able to hear our own conversations. My only one complaint was the amount of walking needed to get to the restaurant even with the elevator but we made due.
WONDERFUL AMBIANCE. Great food. The soups are perfect, meal cooked perfectly. Delicious. Wonderful deserts.
Pretzel crusted walleye signature dish was outstanding. My friend had a filet which was cooked exactly as ordered. You get a choice of two sides and a mini loaf of warm bread with herb butter. Yum. Erik the bartender made a great old fashioned, and our server Vicky was very attentive, without being intrusive. A great date night out.
Great service along with perfectly prepared food was great.
Delicious meal and good service.
Only our second time there but a defining place for us. Low key atmosphere, history laden with delicious food. My wife and I have made this an anniversary staple.
An excellent meal in a nice hotel dining room. Food was all well prepared, and menu offered some unique menu items such as their Blue Cheese Soup! Slightly understaffed for a busy evening, but that's to be expected in a seasonal town. We'll be back!
The filet was excellent. Perfectly done, as requested. The service by Jeff, and his assisting server in training Ava, was top notch. Attentive without being smothering. We will be back.
Nice Steakhouse located in the historical Galena first hotel.
Staff was very nice and and food was great and very well served. Great wine list.
We sat at the bar and our bartender was Eric. He was outstanding. Great sense of humor and very engaging. Actually, we got the sense that all of the servers were wonder because we saw how they engaged with our bartender. The food was great as well. Crab bisque, shrimp wrapped in bacon, crab legs and prime rib are top notch. This is a must go when in Galena.
While the quality of the steak cuts was average, there was little to know seasoning to do anything to them. Hardly even salt and pepper. MY NY Strip was undersized and thin and as a result was medium well when ordered medium. My wife's filet was under cooked when ordered medium.
The service was slow for being a Monday night and only half full.
This restaurant far exceeded our expectations. I would highly recommend it.
The Hostess was amazing!
Pork chop was terrible. Tasted off. Salmon was delicious. Bread and herb butter was tasty. A salad included in the price would’ve been nice! Atmosphere great, especially if you’re a history buff.
We had a great time. The service was excellent. The food was delicious. We have no concerns or complaints at all. We will come back again!
We had a nice quiet dinner at the General. The food was delicious and the service was great.
On vacation. Food was good but the experience was just so-so. The hostess was kind of rude when we asked about the restaurant’s famed ghost. I realize she’s probably sick of the question but I’m sure many people eat there because of the stories so if you want more business play it up. Just meh.
Service is great, and the dining room is very nice.
Food was vastly underseasoned.
The server was terrible. We really love this restaurant. But to be treated like we were, it will be hard for us to go back.
We arrived just before opening and had a couple drinks in the lounge area. The hostess was very friendly. We were seated right away, our server was attentive, food was good, and we had a real nice experience.
My husband and I wanted a quiet romantic evening. Ann our hostess was so welcoming. Gail our server and Amalia were so attentive. We were there on a Tuesday so not so busy, which was great. I had the best Manhattan I think I’ve ever had. We split the crab bisque soup with their piping hot fresh bread. My husband had the blackberry ribs and I had the French salad. Generous portions and so delicious. Can’t wait to go back.
The food was good but nothing spectacular. The building is really nice and the history is really awesome. If you don’t eat there, at least go see it.
We had a wonderful server. She was patient and helpful. I had the flat iron steak Oscar Style. And it was excellent and my wife had the salmon which she enjoyed also. Be aware that they advertise casual fine dining and the prices are definitely fine dining but you may have to sit next to a guy in a faded Cubs t-shirt and ball cap like we did.
It was our anniversary. They had the table decorated with hearts and kisses. Nice touch! The walleye dinner was outstanding. Overall, a great choice.
Staff are very attentive, friendly, & accommodating. I would recommend all to enjoy the experience.
My wife and I chose the Generals Restaurant to celebrate our 7th wedding anniversary, because of the buildings history and what we have heard and read about it. What we got was so much more. the people, the food, the ambiance the decor, it gave us so much more that we could imagine. we enjoyed it so much that we plan to come back later this summer and stay at the Desoto House and partake in the whole experience. The food was absolutely delicious, the service was 5 star, the ambiance was perfect. everyone we met, went beyond to help us. Thank You and we will see you later this summer.
Walleye wasn't anything special, husband really enjoyed his pasta. Sat next to small birthday gathering so was a bit louder than I hoped but not unbearable. Cheesecake was excellent!
The steak I have to say was not a great cut very fatty for a sirloin and the taste was not out of this world very bland . But we had an autistic child and the service to make his dinner perfect was outstanding.
The food was just not as upscale as we usually look for in a restaurant.
The place was lovely and the staff was friendly and accommodating and although the food was good, we just cant rave about it.
