GATO is owned by Bobby Flay and Laurence Kretchmer who previously owned the Spanish restaurant, BOLO, together for 15 years. BOLO met an unfortunate demise when its building was torn down to make way for a new development. The partners vowed to revive the spirit of BOLO. They are thrilled to launch GATO as its next renewal.
What Insiders Are Saying
Gato will remind you why Bobby Flay became famous in the first place - because he can cook.
I’ve been a customer in the past, and this was my first time back after a two year gap. The food was mediocre, but was most upsetting was where the hostess chose to seat us.
The restaurant was nearly empty when we sat, and remained nearly empty throughout the duration of our meal. For some reason unknown to me, we were seated at the back, right against a service area ordering kiosk. Between being slammed against that and the kitchen, the ambiance was pretty terrible. Uncomfortable to have a conversation with servers standing over us to place their orders. Why we couldn’t have been seated at any one of the other hundreds of vacant seats is beyond me.
Frankly, they might as well have sat us in the restroom.
Poor judgement, and that coupled with mediocre food leads me to think that this place is over.
Food was extraordinary
Casual setting but noise level felt like a Rock concert
First, let me say that the service is top notch. The cadence of delivery was perfect, our waiter was extremely knowledgeable, and the supporting wait staff kept the table clear and water filled without being obtrusive. Now the food. Wow. We tried a ridiculous anount of food and everything was outstanding. I could not tell you what we liked best because it was all excellent. When you go, and you should go, try as much as you can and don't be afraid to be adventurous.
When the roasted corn side dish stands out, you know the rest is not up to Bobby Flay standards. Stick with Mesa. Sea bass was a big dissapointment.
We had dinner at GATO on Fathers Day . It was our first time going to this restaurant.
The food was amazing and good size portions. The lamb sausage pizza was remarkable and the cheesecake was the best cheese cake we've ever had. The service was excellent. I highly recommend GATO if your looking for great food quality and excellent service.
The hostess told me they did not have available high chairs for my baby and they couldn’t accommodate the stroller either, she literally told me to put my baby on a regular chair (she is 9months old) when I told her She will fall if she sits on the chair so she answered me to put her on my lap!!!! She was so nasty! I talked to somebody else and they allowed me to put the stroller next to my table. When I got to my table I saw two more tables with strollers next to their tables! My salmon salad wasn’t good at all!
The restaurant was just ok for a Sunday lunch the other day. Very salty chicken salad. It is pretty close to the Angelika.
Gato is my new favorite NY restaurant...!
Not a single bad bite... everything was exceptional...!
Amazing. Great service all around from hostess to wait staff! Food was delicious. Definitely get the octopus and lamb pizza!
Absolutely loved Gato! The restaurant itself was beautiful, and the staff was beyond amazing. Our waiter heard it was my birthday, and he went above and beyond for us! I will 100% come back. The food was to die for!! So delicious!
My wife had the fried chicken and it was excellent. I had the porterhouse pork chop ordered medium. Pork chop was over cooked and dry. I mentioned to the waiter (who gave excellent service). While I didn’t want to receive anything for this feedback, no manager or anyone else responded to this feedback. Overall very disappointing for a Bobby Flay restaurant.
Unbelievably delicious dinner! Loved every bite! I ordered the halibut and it was extraordinary. Would love to go back again soon!
So many flavors and not a bad dish! Artisan cocktails are also a nice feature. Easy task get to as nearby many subway lines.
The octopus appetizer was tender and delicious...reminded us of the same in Portugal recently.
Emma our server (a fellow Canadian) was amazing. It was our anniversary and she helped make it very special. The mussels and pork chop were the best we have ever had. The French Martinis were also better than any we ever had.
We highly recommend Gato especially for special occasions.
Food is just incredible! Reasonable prices for an Iron Chef (The GOAT).
Thank you so much to all the staff for making our dinner so amazing. We had a horrible experience on our first night in New York when the restaurant we had reserved cancelled our reservation for a private event and did not bother to contact us to let us know. When you found this out everyone went above and beyond to make us feel welcomed and took excellent care of us. The burrata was exceptional!
Really, really awful service. Had to ask random servers walking by repeatedly where our server was to even get our order placed. After we got our drinks and FINISHED them...took over 20 minutes after they were finished for our server to even swing by and see if we wanted to order another glass of wine. Almost went to the bar to start ordering additional drinks. Food was also far from exceptional. Pizza was ok. The rest was not up to my expectations.
Beautiful food, really great service and a great nyc space. The smart casual dress requirements are not needed as there was a chap there in shorts . But if that's the worse that I can think of, shows you how good it was
Probably my favorite restaurant
The receptionist area could use some improvement. Saying goodbye to patrons post dinner would be important in my view.
A little bumpy at arrival, but table service made up for it. Wonderful experience for a family get together - food was splendid, staff were attentive, non intrusive, friendly. The room design feels warm timeless and people seemed to respond well to it. We all said we could easily come back...
Terrible service and mediocre food.
I went two years ago and had a fantastic experience this time was awful.
The waiter was unprofessional and downright rude.
The food was OK at best.
Don’t recommend and won’t be back.
Amazing meal- bobby flay knows exactly what he’s doing. So many different flavors and plates.
Incredible food and drinks, gorgeous space, friendly service
Overpriced, very noisy. Aside from the scrambled egg dish (which was outstanding), the other dishes (scallop, shrimp and chorizo appetizers) were OK. The portions were very small. Our main course (the kale mushroom risotto), was rather mediocre in flavour. It has a rushed vibe. The food comes very fast. You’re in and out and may feel hungry afterwards.
Very expensive hour!
Visited to celebrate my boyfriend’s birthday while in NYC for the weekend. He is a huge fan of Bobby Flay and we were certainly not disappointed! Everything was excellent- the food, the staff, & the ambiance. We will be there every time we are in NYC!!
My third time at Gato, always a very nice meal but never left feeling like it was an amazing experience, especially for the money. Food is always tasty but there seems to always be something that is not perfect. For spending over $500 for 4 people, I expect to be overwhelmed.
This was a celebratory dinner, so we went all in and ordered a lot of options. Everything was excellent. The fried chicken and the pork chop seem like pretty basic entrees, but they were prepared with true expertise. The "bar" section at the top of the menu is basically an extended appetizer option list, so there's just a lot of selection.
Bobby Flay's best restaurant yet, and I think one of the best options in NYC.
The restaurant is in a large, open brick building. Decor is casual and tasteful. The chairs were very uncomfortable. The food was delicious although tiny portions. Booths can accommodate 5-6 small people with additional chairs. Larger groups will feel cramped.
Our Waiter Derrick was amazing! Thank You Gato!
Still miss the variety of the Mesa Grill but no less Bobby Flay Signature taste!
Excellent food, service and ambiance. Could not have been happier.
Had gone when “Gato” first opened as we were enormous fans of “Bolo”. Very disappointed at that time.
Years later, we have tried again ...we’re THRILLED!
Food and ambience was very good but server was extremly rude. We were asked to choose our food and wine immediately upon being given the menus. She was agreesive and condescending. We were told the kitchen was closing and we needed to hurry.
The reataurant shouldn’t accept late reservations if they are going to rush the people. The biggest issue is that the server was not speaking to us in a polite way. It was as though she was doing us a favor letting us eat there.
It started from the moment we got there until we left. I love Bobby flay reataurants but will never eat here or recommend it to anyone again.
Great spot with phenomenal food by Bobby Flay.
We came to Gato in the hopes of giving the date of June 1 a special new meaning (last year we were dealing with a major health crisis). The food from the start to finish was absolutely delicious. Everything was beyond amazing. Becky was the kindest sweetest soul who went above and beyond making sure we enjoyed the evening. We were also very lucky because Bobby Flay was in that night and we got a chance to meet him. Can’t wait to go back soon!
Best brunch experience & food EVER!!! French Toast & pomegranate bacon is to die for...as is the GATO Burger...corn muffin...chorizo ❤️
Wanted to come here for a long time. Did not disappoint. Charred Beef was incredible. Mixed drinks were very good.
Great experience! Very nice ambiance, good service, good food and good price. We tried the scrambled eggs, and the octopus for appetizers. The creamy corn was excellent as a company to main entrees. The dark chocolate dessert was spectacular! Good job!!
Food was AMAZING!!! Service was very attentive and prompt.
I thought it was a little loud and it isn't inexpensive but I'd go back in a heartbeat to experience the food!!!
