GATO is Chef Bobby Flay's expression of Mediterranean food, drink, and design. The NoHo location is a 100-year-old building, and GATO is the first restaurant to reside there. GATO combines its NYC roots with a European sensibility and has a casual approach, a bustling environment, and a dedicated passion to its cuisine. The name GATO was inspired by a mysterious orange cat that walked through Mr. Flay's feet on Lafayette Street while he was waiting for a real estate broker to show him the space for the first time. The cat has not been seen since, but his initial appearance has made a permanent impression.
GATO is owned by Bobby Flay and Laurence Kretchmer who previously owned the Spanish restaurant, BOLO, together for 15 years. BOLO met an unfortunate demise when its building was torn down to make way for a new development. The partners vowed to revive the spirit of BOLO. They are thrilled to launch GATO as its next renewal.

Gato Ratings and Reviews
The burrata, octopus and kale/mushroom paella are MUSTS!
Our waitress was very knowledgeable about the entire menu and made great suggestions.
The hostess sat us near a table full of noisy kids and was happy to move us to a quieter area of the restaurant. We were seated near the bar and it got very "spirited". Just as we were about to pay our bill, the manager came up with a revised bill, apologized for the noise and comped our drinks.
Really great service! And very friendly staff that even included some complimentary biscotti and cream sherry for my birthday! Loved the kale and mushroom paella — very crispy! We thought the octopus app was good, but the sauce was a little over powering. Overall delicious and great service!
The food was outstanding. However, the service was so fast, it was unreal how rushed we felt. We asked our server 3 times to slow the service down, but it kept going, super fast pace. We always had staff at our table, cleaning up our plates, bringing water, literally standing there waiting for us to finish our last bite to take the plate away. The over-service just killed our mood. We were there to celebrate a special event but the entire time we had staff at our table rushing us. It was very unpleasant.
I found Gato to be very welcoming and energetic. We really wanted to like it. Unfortunately two of our dishes, the cauliflower and the octopus were so over seasoned that they were inedible. If our waiter had checked on us promptly we would have returned the dishes. We reported our dissatisfaction to a manager and he did adjust the bill.
My second visit to Gato. The reception was welcoming and the service attentive. We were seated at a corner table in the very back of the restaurant, which was perfect. Most of the dishes were very good; the Gato salad is delicious, although the portion quite small. The pork chop is tender, sitting on a bed of delicious polenta, but slightly flat in flavor. The pumpkin filled pasta was tasty but a bit heavy handed. All in all, a very good meal and we will be back.
Great food and service! We came here as a group of four for a special occasion and it did not disappoint. I was a bit early and got a glass of wine from the bar that the bartender recommended (it was great). We sat down promptly when the group arrived. We split two bar "tapas" for four of us (this is a really fun option on the menu - basically, a set of three tapas plates, so we had six total - it was a great way to try more of the food) then each got an entree. One of our members is hardly an adventurous eater but he ordered the rabbit and loved it. My dish, the saffron linguine, was delicious and the perfect size. If you have a big appetite, you may need to order an appetizer as well. The only potential downsides - the restaurant is one large room so I could see it getting noisy. It's not too loud to have a casual conversation, though. Also the bathroom sinks are shallow and it's hard to wash your hands. Those are the only two very minor downsides - overall the restaurant is fantastic!
This is a good fairly priced place for some creative, well-cooked and presented dishes with a Spanish influence. The octopus is well worth mentioning and i have no idea how it gets so tender and tasty. The meat dishes are also well worth trying. It is not a cheap place but the food is worth the extra costs. the wine list is good and reasonably priced. It is quite a large space and can get a bit noisy when busy.
We went to Gato so we could mark off a “Bucket List” item for my hubby-eat at a Bobby Flay restaurant. We met friends there and one of them has a dietary restriction. The entire staff that waited on us was sure to address that restriction with every item we ordered!
Food is excellently prepared and served! Staff is knowledgeable about the menu.
Will go back if we travel to NYC again.
gato was great when Bobby Flay was in the open kitchen every night and several years later it is equally wonderful. It takes the place of mesa and Bolo in every way although i wish those places were still open. The food is fantastic and frankly better that most top restaurants. The ambiance is fabulous New York downtown scene. I have only one complaint-some of the banquets are too low or the tables too high and some have slits that are hard to sit in. This affects mostly the tables for two on left side as you walk in. Strange as David Rockwell did such a wonderful design for the place. Exciting vibrant food and truly a new york gem.
In NYC for the holidays and wanted to head into the NYU area and experience different bold flavors. Love the trio of appetizers. -Lamb was delicious service was fantastic and loved the ambience. It was warm modern and buzzing with excitement. Great night out in the city. Good vegetarian dishes for both of my daughters !
