GATO is Chef Bobby Flay's expression of Mediterranean food, drink, and design. The NoHo location is a 100-year-old building, and GATO is the first restaurant to reside there. GATO combines its NYC roots with a European sensibility and has a casual approach, a bustling environment, and a dedicated passion to its cuisine. The name GATO was inspired by a mysterious orange cat that walked through Mr. Flay's feet on Lafayette Street while he was waiting for a real estate broker to show him the space for the first time. The cat has not been seen since, but his initial appearance has made a permanent impression.

GATO is owned by Bobby Flay and Laurence Kretchmer who previously owned the Spanish restaurant, BOLO, together for 15 years. BOLO met an unfortunate demise when its building was torn down to make way for a new development. The partners vowed to revive the spirit of BOLO. They are thrilled to launch GATO as its next renewal.

Exceptional dining experience for my wife's birthday. Everything that we had was delicious and expertly served. Terrific wines selected by our daughter, noted wine and booze writer Amanda Schuster, with the assistance of the sommelier. Perfect meal!

Overall, a good place, most of the flavors were quite good. One of our dishes was quite bland. The appetizers were quite small, almost bite size. Was expecting a little more for a Bobby Flay resto.

Very good food but the portions are as small as the prices are large. Got three items "for the table" boy what a misnomer. Hardly enough for even one person.

We chose to come here for my daughter’s 13th and bc we love Bobby Flay...it did not disappoint!!! Very cool architecture and ambiance, service was fantastic, attentive, informative and friendly, and the food was to die for...my brother and daughter even tried the octopus! The desserts alone are worth coming back for and I will be dreaming of the blueberry pannecota for months! Thank you for an amazing experience!!! Sincerely from NH

Outstanding food - a little loud for my taste, but worth it for the menu! I would highly recommend this as it is an experience if you are a foodie! The only disappointment for us was the glassware they use for martini's (remind me of the old fashion champagne glasses, and that we could not get blue cheese stuffed olives in our dirty martini's. For a restaurant of this quality we were surprised, however they did bring us some blue cheese on the side so we could make our own. I would go back again in a heart beat and try everything on the menu!!

Everything had SO much flavor, we enjoyed the shrimp and the scrambled eggs appetizer. Then the steak, black ink squid pasta and cauliflower. The mixed drinks and wine also hit the spot! We only wish Bobby was there! Cool space as well.

Dinner at Gato was first rate from start to finish. The mix of tapas and conventional meal options was great. Every dish was executed perfectly. The octopus was the best I've had on any continent in my life, grilled lightly but sooo tender and served with an agrodolce that did not obscure its fresh-from-the-sea flavor. The rabbit also was outstanding, succulent and framed well with a not-too-in-your-face barbecue sauce. The wine list is small but has many interesting Spanish and French choices, and you can't go wrong no matter what your price point. And the dessert menu is very creative. Save some room and order a few to share. The only misfire was the piquillo pepper stuffed with raw tuna and scallions. The scallions were so numerous and pungent that we couldn't taste the tuna, although its texture was silky. Gato is pricey, but it's a great choice for a special occasion. And the management has learned since the Mesa Grill days that diners need enough room between the tables to keep one patron's posterior off of another's plate. We did not experience the delays reported by other reviewers, even on an early September Saturday night. We will go here again, eagerly. Next time we'll request a table right next to the kitchen so we can watch the magic happen.

Food and service were outstanding, as was decor! Bathroom lights are very dim! Otherwise a wonderful experience. Try the roasted cauliflower... seriously.

We had a great dinner thanks to our waiter Augustine's great recommendations. Great decoration with high ceiling. Paella is a vegetarian dish but one of the best paellas I have ever had. The custard desert was excellent too. It was pricey (about $100/person) but excellent.

Gato offered great service and a varied menu. It's a bit loud and hard to hear the other person on the other side so you have to speak up a little, but that was perhaps the case since we sat near the bar. I didn't see too many Mediterranean dishes considering it's listed on restaurant lists as serving Mediterranean/Spanish cuisine. The scallops were really great, a tad bit salty but went well with the corn. The bread pudding was delicious, well balanced flavors and didn't feel too carb heavy like most other bread pudding desserts. The potatoes as a side dish was crispy on the outside and tender on the inside and well garnished...delicious.

Spot on food. Bar plates are awesome. Shrimp was great. Steak was perfect and great size after the stuff at the start. Drinks were right on point. Can’t go wrong here: big fan.

Gato was a great overall experience, until we got the check. As a regular restaurant-goer in NYC, I am accustomed to pricey small plates, but Gato pushes it when it comes to the cost of its dishes. While the bar snack menu is appropriately priced (3 single-serve tapas for $21) given the high quality of the ingredients (the tuna-stuffed piquillo pepper and beef crudo were excellent), the starters and entrees were just too expensive for the portion size. A $32 scallop entree came plated on a tiny pile of farro and corn, with only two scallops atop the dish. Perfectly seared and dressed, it was not acceptable in terms of portion size. Similarly, the $24 octopus starter had a tangy orange glaze and was impeccably cooked, but one tentacle does not merit that price tag. The service, ambience, and variety are all great, but the value isn't there.

Food was very good. Would definitely eat here again. Tables are close together so had to listen to an obnoxious guy with vulgar language have a loud conversation at the table next to us.

The octopus appetizer is by far the best I’ve ever had.
The steak was very good but not great and the portion was small.
The vegetarian pasta was excellent.

Amazing. Must haves are the scrambled eggs, squash blossom, and paella. Not vegetarians, but those all blew us away. Excellent cocktails and good wine list. This is definitely a place for foodies. I had the halibut, it was awesome as well. Cool place, it’s all great.

We were having a family weekend in the city and my daughter wanted to eat at Gato. The eight of us had a wonderful dinner, enjoyed the restaurant and the food was amazing. Definitely will go back to Gato!

Inside the decor is nice and the lighting was on the darker side but good enough at the bar to see the menu. We order the bar bites to start, they’re literally bite size. The Burrata was absolutely delicious. The eggplant was very good too. The pork belly well done and tough but had amazing sauces that tasted very good. The octopus appetizer was very good as well but also a little over cooked and tougher than usual.

Service was good. Nice decor. A little loud. Food was good but not great. Would have liked to give 3.5 stars. Best was the octopus appetizer and the charred carrots.
Scallops were good but portion small. Saffron pasta was just ok.
