GATO is Chef Bobby Flay's expression of Mediterranean food, drink, and design. The NoHo location is a 100-year-old building, and GATO is the first restaurant to reside there. GATO combines its NYC roots with a European sensibility and has a casual approach, a bustling environment, and a dedicated passion to its cuisine. The name GATO was inspired by a mysterious orange cat that walked through Mr. Flay's feet on Lafayette Street while he was waiting for a real estate broker to show him the space for the first time. The cat has not been seen since, but his initial appearance has made a permanent impression.
GATO is owned by Bobby Flay and Laurence Kretchmer who previously owned the Spanish restaurant, BOLO, together for 15 years. BOLO met an unfortunate demise when its building was torn down to make way for a new development. The partners vowed to revive the spirit of BOLO. They are thrilled to launch GATO as its next renewal.

Gato Ratings and Reviews
Drinks arrived after starter. No bread until we asked. Bench chairs are significantly lower than opposing chairs making it seem like I was so much lower than my husband who was opposite. Restaurant was cool and had to put a jacket on. Apparently creme brûlée Catalonian style is a burnt sugar top but perhaps this should be mentioned in the dessert description as to us it just tasted burnt.
This was my first time going to Gato. I was eager to go for a while now and boy the wait was sooo worth it. Absolutely love the food, the service and the ambiance. Overall it was a great experience and definitely will recommend this restaurant to everyone I know. Keep up with the great service and delicious intriquite food. Great job by management and the rest of the staff...Bravo!!!
We had a great dinner at Gato last Saturday. The service was excellent, very interesting dishes on the menu and terrific taste. Besides the ambiance of the restaurant is very good. It was definitely one of the best meals I have had in a long time. Strongly recommend for a good dinner with friends or to bring your date!
Visited Gato for the second time in one month and it did not disappoint! Brought friends visiting from out of town & immediately felt the NYC energy upon walking in. They loved the interiors and feel of the restaurant. Bar tender was quick to serve us and roll drinks into dinner tab. And the food was delicious - the octopus and paella were standouts as were the cauliflower and acorn squash -but really it was ALL delicious!!! One little issue - it can be pretty loud (conversation from a packed place) at the height of evening dinner service. We had a 9:30 Sat night rez & it was def noticeable. Hate to even complain as it was such a yummy and great night but just want other guests to know :-)
The food was the best.....most AMAZING dinner ever!
The Pasta dish I had was Absolutely insane!
The small plate idea is Genius......not to mention the ambiance, service, quality, staff and variety of choices that will leave you coming back for more.
Already planning my next visit with friends!
Wonderful experience! We've lived in NYC for 5 years, finally made it here on a night away from the kiddo. Lives up to the hype, and well worth booking ahead. The scrambled eggs are life changing, a must-have. The shrimp, gato spreads, and eggplant shared plates are all incredible. You won't be disappointed, basically no matter what you get.
The best part about the meal is the small plates you order first and share. They are like little tiny entrees. So creative and delicious it’s almost like Christmas when they arrive at your table. A lovely glowing space where everyone looks good! The service is first class and the staff is knowledgeable and, most importantly, kind. One of my favorite places to dine.
As someone who spontaneously binges on the Food Network every now and then, my go-to shows are Chopped and... Beat Bobby Flay. You get the sense that while not many people are really fans of the guy's personality, there's no denying he can actually cook. So I figured... why not try one of his restaurants in NYC?
Reserving on Opentable was easy and the staff called a day before to confirm. The space is quite nice, not too ornate to the point of feeling stuffy, but still possessing a pleasant ambiance.
The food definitely did not disappoint. The roasted octopus appetizer had an amazing consistency which I have never experienced before. From the get-go one can tell that the dishes are meant to be enjoyed as a "holistic" experience - in the sense that the tastiest bite is one which comprises everything on the plate. The appetizer sizing was more on the small side but quality over quantity suited us just fine.
This carried over to the entree - the porterhouse pork chop was cooked to perfection - again, combining it with the accompanying polenta and tomato sauce really took it over the top. Our waiter recommended the squash as an accompanying vegetable, I'm not sure if he predicted how well it would pair but the result was really fantastic. The portion was also very well sized for an entree.
Even after consuming that much food, it was not up for debate whether we'd try dessert. I have to say that the apple tart (maybe they called it a crostada) with allspice ice cream was just PHENOMENAL. Even my girlfriend who usually will not touch apples had to admit as such. All in all, a wonderful meal - would definitely recommend Gato to anyone in NYC.
Final note: the wait staff were excellent. Case in point, we had to wait a bit for a cocktail, and they took the charge off the bill to compensate, which was completely unexpected but still a much appreciated gesture.
We dined at Gato with a dear friend visiting from Italy--where the food isn't too shabby (lol) but we and he wanted to experience something amazing. Based on what we'd heard about Gato, we snagged the very non-hip early dinner reservation and were nothing but thrilled with everything that followed. Food -- amazing with flavors and freshness that satisfied and tantalized. Service -- lovely, professional and welcoming from the moment we arrived through dinner. This staff is wonderful in every way! My only regret is that we were too delighted with each dish to take time to photo and Instagram. Next time! We want to make Gato our regular place.
