Came to visit my daughter who just moved to Boston. Saw the reviews and photos looked like it would be a great place for dinner. Underwhelmed with the dishes. Over-rich entrees, flavor just okay. Garnish on plate was wilted, marrow was almost nonexistent under heavily oiled scraps of rib meat, but the richly buttered toast that came with it wouldn’t have made a happy pairing anyway...marrow should have been the sole unctuous part playing to a foil of great toasted bread. Everything was too rich... trout almondine was not great.. expected the light broiled dish from Europe- everything was heavy...puréed parsnips were too rich and did not pair well with the meunière sauce (also very rich) Didn’t live up to its promise. The gratin racklette was a pan of potatoes with melted cheese on top...no skill involved here... the presentation was not nice, as the dish looked like it had been sitting for awhile, the cheese had hardened again, before it came to our table.
Deserts were also not great. Server was pleasant at first and then did not see him for awhile. Very little interaction.
The decor is really attractive, it’s just the fare feels like heavy American food playing French dress up.
We had a terrific time - food, atmosphere.
But most of all, our server, EJ, was just fabulous - helpful, friendly, accommodating, responsive - but not overbearing. He is really the best waiter we have had at Gaslight, and certainly one of the top waiters we have experienced.
Excellent food, very attentive service. It was fairly busy for a Sunday night. We couldn't resist sampling their excellent escargot on top of our DineOut Boston dinners. Both the tomato veloute and the frisee/endive salad were quite tasty and the roasted hake portions were very generous. Midway through our meal, a server rushing through the tight seating accidently knocked over our wine bottle. The wait staff and restaurant manager lept to re-seat us and replace both our wine and appetizers. An excellent, over the top recovery - the sign of a restaurant that truly appreciates their customers.
Our waiter was "Alex" and he was engaging, attentive and just awesome.
Service at this gaslight is always outstanding ! Solidly great birthday dinner
Came here for brunch and the food was fantastic. Very satisfying and well thought out meals and presentations. Brunch cocktails and truffle fries were standouts from the meal.
Incredible as always
Outstanding service in a very hip place. Excellent food taste and quality.
Again and again, Gaslight proves its reputation as a premier dining destination. Last night, we had Spaetzel Forestiere with wild mushrooms and a truffled sauce - divine; Roasted Cod Poêlée - outstanding, "about the best fish dish I have had in a very long time;" and Salmon with tiny French blue lentils (rare), absolutely scrumptious, clean plates all. The finale was graced by the Mousse au Chocolat, a delectable richly smooth gob of mousse topped with faintly sweet whipped cream. An unbelievable meal. This is what they do every day, folks. And, the coupe de grâce - validated parking! Go and be dazzled!
As always, the cocktails, wine and food was top notch. The music was too loud, with the speakers located near our table, it made conversation nearly impossible. Our waiter and the manager were very reluctant to turn it down a bit.
We would have stayed longer for dessert and after-dinner drinks, but it was too loud for comfort.
Choose your table accordingly!
(And enjoy the delicious food).
I've only been here for brunch on weekends and will probably keep doing that! The place has great lighting so I recommend going during the day and then taking a stroll around the South End.
I have been having brunch at gaslight 1-2 times a month for years. Im seriously considering never going again after this experience. The bartender that served us was inhospitable and rude - staring blankly at us as we ordered, then forgetting our orders and having to ask again, acting generally unconvinced by our presence.
We were not assigned a server and had to ask for one in order to even get water. He then did not take our order for another 20 minutes. Our brunch appetizers came out at the same time as the food. Poor service, good food. Not our usual experience there.
We got in at 10 am for Sunday brunch. The restaurant was quiet when we sat and quickly filled up. Our server was very nice and attentive. He was aware of our order and went above and beyond to get us what we wanted. The food was ok, as I felt the brunch offerings were a bit limited, but our server made our overall experience a lot better.
My go-to place to take out-of-towners. Always a treat; always consistently excellent.
Great French food and ambiance. The eggs were very good, and the muscles were tasty-but a little to lemony for my liking. Would recommend the chocolate mousse for dessert, but the lava cake missed the mark-it looks more like a glorified muffin. Overall a really good birthday or brunch spot.
We seem to visit here once a year and have never been disappointed! We had an early reservation on Saturday due to plans later on so the restaurant and bar were fairly quiet when we arrived. Service was excellent, our waiter was super friendly and didn't disappear for long periods. Food was amazing! We had the forraged mushrooms to start (I know, sounds simple but if you like mushrooms was so so good) and I ended up with the scallops over a parsnip puree special and my husband the steak frites. Both were really good and would definitely get again. I know there are some negative reviews out there but we have never have anything but a good experience each time we come here. Worth a visit!
Very nice meal on a Thursday evening with friends- so it wasn’t too crowded. Excellent service. The scallop special was outstanding.
My parents are regulars here, they love the parking lot. This place is a stand by and I still think it’s great French food for a reasonable price.
Really unremarkable. Noisy (loud, couldn't hear or have a conversation -- music too loud, acoustics terrible). Tables were too close together and waiter's butt was in our face as he took order from table next to us. Food was just ok, if that.
Used to be very good- not anymore. Poorly trained staff, very average food. Nothing special at all.
They were mobbed so have to cut them slack on many levels. Reservation was 20 mins late, didn’t order drinks or food for 20 mins after that, bar was backed up so drinks took 10 minutes to come, food was good, waiter was beyond stressed. All in all it was good just seems they aren’t able to handle these high volume moments perfectly.
Waiter forgot our order, so we had to order twice. Girlfriend got sick from the tuna. We both ordered the specials and were much higher priced than any entrees on the menu - deceiving.
Fantastic food as always ! my girl friend who had never been loved it !! only thing was it was a bit warm but I believe this was due to the unseasonable warm weather that night. Still one of my favorite places to eat !!
Our waitstaff were friendly, dynamic, and efficient — and the food even better!
I went with a group and everyone enjoyed the food and the atmosphere.
Love the Gaslight! This is the perfect restaurant for a special occasion meal. I recommend ordering any duck dish on the menu. The service is excellent!
I have heard great things about Gaslight and it did not disappoint! I went with a friend for dinner and we both loved our meals. They are currently offering a special 'Apres Ski' menu that includes fondue and raclette. We got the raclette with roasted potatoes and they were the best potatoes I have ever had (and I eat a lot of potatoes); melt in your mouth good. I got the steak frites and my friend got the trout and both were delicious. The ambiance is great as well. I can't wait to share this gem with other friends.
Great service! Excellent food, however the chocolate cake for dessert was a little over cooked. Great place overall!
Although it has been a while since we went to Gaslight, we used to visit frequently. For our first trip back after a year or two away, we decided to go for our 20th anniversary and were disappointed with the experience.
We made a 7:45 PM reservation on a Sunday evening. We arrived on time and were told they were "very backed up" and asked to sit in the bar, with our two teenage daughters. We kept asking for and not getting updates from our server in the bar. After 40 minutes of this, went to the host myself to complain and a table magically turned up.
Once we were seated, the meal started off well, with a good appetizer. However, our main courses then took close to 40 minutes to come out. While our server was apologetic, that didn't help that we were now 1.5 hours + into the evening with no real dinner yet on the table. Once the main courses did arrive our server vanished. So, when we wanted to order the dessert she said she would comp for us, she was nowhere to be found. So, another long wait for dessert and then another long wait for the check.
In addition to the wait, the music selection for the evening was loud and probably better suited for a club than a restaurant. Over all we were very disappointed with the experience, which was very different from the past.
One thing that hasn't changed was the quality of the food, which was very good. Unfortunately, that wouldn't be enough for me to want to go back, which is a shame.
The food was great, the staff wasn’t knowledgeable about the food or wine menu
very convenient free validated parking adjacent to the restaurant!
Went for Sunday brunch. Food and cocktails were AMAZING. Music was a little loud but still a great experience.
We come here all the time, its one of our favorite places in Boston. Love the ambiance, the French feeling and the great food, of course.
Went for a friends birthday brunch excellent food excellent service pastry basket is a family favorite!
Yummy. Expensive. Beautiful.
Always a fun venue with delicious food and friendly waiters . A real bistro feel .
The restaurant was full so understandable service is slower but waiting 40 minutes for an appetizer to come out and then another 30 minutes for your entree is unacceptable. The waiter didn’t once check-in to give us updates or offer bread while we waited 40 minutes for our appetizer to come. I also thought it was strange we were given empty bowls for our shells when ordering seafood dishes.
Very good food and charming atmosphere. The fact that they have a parking lot and validate parking is a major plus!
Tight quarters for valentine's day. They put multiple people at one table in order to fit every one.
