From the owners of Woodward's Garden, we welcome you to Gardenias - a new neighborhood spot in the best sense of the word. Locally sourced and seasonally influenced, our menu pays respect to the unique bounty of Northern California.
We offer both small and large plates and a thoughtful beverage list that includes wine and beer on tap and in bottles.
Guests are welcome to drop in for a drink and a quick bite — there is bar seating, a patio, and sidewalk seating that we do not reserve and encourage last minute, walk-ins! 1 block from the Kabucki Sundance Cinemas.
They are understaffed in kitchen tonight. Long long wait for hot food. Dessert came quickly.
Our waitress was very friendly and attentive, and she gave us very thoughtful responses to questions. I felt like she genuinely wanted us to enjoy ourselves. In fact, everyone was very welcoming. Makes me want to make Gardenias a regular hangout.
Food and Service was good. We did feel a little rushed, but it was Valentines day
Best meal in SF.
Food was pretty good but wildly overpriced. $5 for bread and butter? $26 for THREE raviolis? Our server was very nice, but I probably won't return.
Food was great! Ambiance great! Will definitely be back.
I had a lovely dinner
Gardenias is a lovely spot. The ambiance is magical, service good, and the food delicious.
A great neighborhood pick. Delicious food in a relaxed but distinguished environment.
Loved it! Great service, fabulous fresh food and a delightful ambience. Will definitely be back.
Nice ambience for a special occasion such as I was celebrating. Simple, chic, atmosphere. Wait staff was attentive. Food was pricey but very good quality.
my husband and i walked by this place so often so finally last night i decided to take my hubbie there for his birthday. it turned out the food was so horrible. we ordered scallops for appetizer and scallops were so thin and overcooked. the quality of scallops were cheap, not the best quality. when our enteees arrived. my fish was so dry and overcooked. my hubbie ordered short ribs and the meat was mostly fat. there wasn't much of meat there. and the bowl was filled with lard. i did ask for a replacement of my dish to ricotta ravioli. it was a big mistake. the ravioli was under cooked. pasta was raw and chewy. i was very disappointed with the quality of food. i wouldn't recommend this place and for the price. it was expensive for poor quality of food. we appreciate hood food. we are foodies but this restaurant is a big no-no.
i decided to book at l'ardoise this coming saturday to make up for the bad experience we had at this restaurant. i look forward to dining at l'ardoise with my hubbie.
Fantastic spot with amazing food. The menu changes regularly, but I've never had anything here that I didn't love.
Every dish my friend and I shared was cooked to perfection with wonderful flavors. Definitely going back.
Probably best ricotta ravioli I've had. More like pillows, with grilled squash pieces rolled in parmesan, and crunchy breadcrumbs.
Great food, romantic ambiance, great and helpful staff!
We loved Dana and Margie's previous restaurant Woodward's Garden and were so happy when they opened Gardenias. The same amazing dedication to a wonderful dining experience can be found here. This is our go-to special event restaurant and are never disappointed.
This place is so romantic! Me and my homegirl came here for NYE dinner. They had same day reservations and once we showed up I was shocked. It was so cute to be open on NYE. I believe we split the filet and the a bottle of rosé and it was so nice. Very pretty, not too busy perfect vibe of what we see look for on NYE.
A creative flair with vegetables in every dish, great service, and smiles all around. Thanks for a consistently wonderful dining experience.
It was a cold dark night and this was a nice warm friendly place. It was perfect for a delicious meal with generous pours before a show at the Fillmore.
This place was great. The sauces for the brown butter gnocci, short rib and fish were perfect.
Always wonderful food and interesting choices, since we started eating at their original, location Woodward’s Gardens many years ago. It is perfect for a premovie dinner or after or for any reason.
Salad needed more acid. Too heavy with Honey. Service nice but a bit slow at first and it was not crowded. Food good but nothing special.
I took my granddaughter out to dinner before she went back to college. We had a seat by the window and were able to hear and talk easily. We split a butter lettuce salad with walnuts and gorgonzola. The salad was almost too salty to eat, I'm not sure what happened, seemed as though no one tasted the salad dressing.. We each had a pasta dish that was delicious. We split a dessert of a lemon meringue tart. The lemon was tasty, but the meringue had the taste of a blow torch, slightly browned, but not fresh tasting. Our waiter was very attentive and made the ok meal truly nice, although he couldn't make up for the salad and dessert.
Wonderful dinner before a night at the Fillmore. Everything we enjoyed was prepared perfectly. We would return in a heartbeat.
Lovely neighborhood restaurant. Great service and nice wine list. It's a charming spot. Two of us ordered the steak medium rare-it was very overcooked. The squid appetizer was good. The socca appetizer was extremely dry. Basically the food was kind of so-so...but the ambiance and our waiter were great. Want to support neighborhood restaurants but not sure we would go again to Gardenias.
Santiago, my waiter was almost better than the food. The wine suggestion paired with the meal perfectly! I cannot wait to go back and try other dishes!
Always delicious combinations. Perfect for sharing and potion size good for having a lot of tastes. It’d be a shame to be unable to try several of each course. Always enjoyable
Gardenias is a beautiful neighborhood spot. Unassuming, but the food is on par with the best SF has to offer. This is one of my go-to spots to take friends who are visiting from out of town.
I had high hopes for Gardenias after reading the reviews. However, our party of five was disappointed. The one real positive was extremely good service. No complaints in that regard at all. The food was OK - nothing really excellent and nothing really bad. There is certainly much better food to eat at Gardenias' prices elsewhere in the city.
The primary problem for us was the noise level. As the restaurant filled up, the noise level became unbearable. That was not something I expected. So it was virtually impossible to carry on a reasonable conversation. Anyone expecting to have a nice quiet meal can forget about it at Gardenias, if the restaurant is over half full. That one point would kill going back, even if the food had been superlative for the price.
I hate to be negative, because the personnel were all really very nice.
45 minutes waiting to get our table... (booked in advance)
But very good food and nice place !
Was in SF and looking for a place for dinner with a colleague and came across Gardenias. It is a lovely place and also has what looks like a wonderful outdoor dining area though on the night we were there a bit too cool to take advantage. The place was not very crowded on a Wednesday night in November and we had a table in the window and conversation was very easy. I suspect if full the noise level would be higher. We shared the squid appetizer which was excellent. I had the duck and my colleague had the short ribs. Both were very good though there could have been a little more "duck" on the dish. We shared a cheese platter to round out the evening. Would definitely be back again.
I have seen this place popup on my open table a number of times and finally decided to give it a try. We booked our table (bar seating only) and were on our way. Our server, I think he was the only one in the entire place, didn't find our reservation and sat us by the window. Service was slow and took a while to get our main entrees. We ordered the fennel and hummus app which didn't come with bread, we had to pay $5 additional to our app for bread and butter!? An app that was already $15 turned into $20. Either way I'm glad we tried it out but once was enough for us.
Love this place: the look, the food, the service!
All around great - except for the price point which precludes it from being a routine place & forces it into competition with many of my favorites which are more conveniently located.
Always creative combinations that are very delucious
All around superb!! Friendly service. Unique food combinations. creative. Just a real delight.
Gardenias never disappoints. The food is top quality, delicious and beautiful. Service is friendly, efficient and never annoying. Everyone there is working to give the best experience possible. And did I say it was delicious?
Food very creative. we dont eat meat but very good non meat options. we live in the neighborhood and it is an upscale addition to the other eateries in there.
one of the owners, Margie is usually available for any questions you may have. A lovely woman.
From my first step inside, I was smitten. Gardenias had such a warm, cozy ambiance. Great wine, kind staff. Our avo toast was superb. I ordered risotto, it had too much oil and made my stomach hurt; ate half, took the rest home. So many fantastic menu options, it was hard to choose so I plan to return soon.
