Gar Woods Grill and Pier Restaurant Ratings and Reviews
I usually try and eat at Gar Woods at least once when I'm at Lake Tahoe. The service is excellent and so is the food. We had crab cakes that were some of the best I've eaten; lobster and crab bisque, that had plenty of chunks of both and was deliciously creamy and tasty; and I had white fish stuffed with crab and lobster that was delicious. We shared a generous hot fudge sundae, before waddling out of the restaurant.
Besides the extended wait for the table (and being told it was being set up until 15 minutes later being told the guests were still at the table) everything was wonderful. We would have appreciated some acknowledgment for the error and long wait (were seated at 7:50 for a 7:15 reservation). Thanks for a nice meal.
Having experienced several very good meals in the past, I was really surprised by the poor quality of our meals last Friday. We were there for my wife’s birthday and looking forward to a great meal. We were promptly seated to a great lake view table (it was early, and the dining room was nearly empty) and at the waiter’s recommendation I had the daily seafood special. It was awful! It was supposed to be a crusted sea bass with a spicy, pineapple based salsa on top. The food came pretty quickly, yet my dinner had tell-tale signs of too much time under a heat lamp. The “crust” had absorbed too much juice from the salsa and then had been baked by the heat lamp into an awful mess. The salsa, on the other hand had been cooked and dried out. It was almost as if I received an extra serving from the night before and they simply reheated it for me. Definitely not up to Gar Woods usual standard. If this had been my first time there, I wouldn’t come back to the restaurant and just limit future visits to the bar for the spectacular views of the lake. Not sure why the quality was so poor last Friday, but I hope it was an aberration.
Beautiful lakefront location for lunch. Quick & attentive service, even though crowded. Ahi poke was delicious, although expensive. Filet mignon was very tasty. A little annoying that they charge $5 for a split plate on the filet after our lunch bill totaled $133.
We go to North Lake Tahoe about once every 2 to 3 months and include Gar Woods as our first and last meal venue every time. We enjoy the ambiance, cocktail menu, overall service and definitely the view! The crafted cocktails are quite good, and we really appreciate the bar menu of food offerings. The wait staff tends to be seasonal, but never lacks in quality or friendliness (proprs to management.) Overall, our favorite restaurant in North Lake Tahoe.
Three of us went for dinner and, along with the food, you can't beat the gorgeous view of Lake Tahoe. We had a picture perfect table at a window. We had a terrific, friendly, warm, knowledgable server who took great care of us, anticipating our every need throughout the evening. We had steak and shrimp, and two filet mignons and they were done exactly as we wanted. We had a drink prior to dinner and wine with dinner, skipped the dessert even though we were tempted.
It's a great place to eat, located between Tahoe City and King's Beach. Pricey and well worth it! We've been there many times and will go many more.
Food was good. The quality was consistent. The service was spotty. I dine at Gar Woods at least once a year. In past dining, our waiter/waitress was attentive. Last Saturday, Gar Woods was so busy that their waiter and waitress was so busy they didn’t notice their diners’ wine glass was running low wine. I have to refill my wine glass and my wife wine glass. I notice other diners from other table were doing the same.
Came out Gar Woods for a late Saturday lunch with family. Quality of the food is always great, including the presentation of the meals; and yes you must try a wet woody if you come out here (you won’t be disappointed). Highly recommended...just make sure to make reservations ahead of time.
Me, my fiancée and future mother in law came up for the weekend and I picked Gar Woods knowing that if we got a seat by the water, it’d justify the very expensive prices. I appreciate that the server paid attention to the note I put on OpenTable and seated us at an outside table along the water. We had the crab cake tasty but for the price I expected at least three! I had the ribeye and shrimp (shrimp cooked too well) and they both had a the salmon salad. And we split a mud pie!
Enjoyable evening - now Ramen noodles for a while... ;)
Lobster bisque to die for. Restaurant noisy. Waitstaff unhelpful. Asked for medium well on steak and thoroughly coooked (golden on both sides) scallops. The steaks was not even 'very rare'. It was bloody and barely warm. The scallops barely kissed the grille. It was like eating wet fishy marshmallows. Gag.
My family and I decided to take a trip up to the lake to see about getting some Garwood's gift certificates for Christmas gifts and having a nice lunch. We always look forward to going. Not so much anymore. The service was bad the food was mediocre. How does this go unnoticed? In the past the service was always wonderful and the food is been exceptional. I'll certainly miss going there. Needless to say I left without give certificates I can't possibly have someone else go there when I won't go back. It's a shame but it's gone downhill .
