Gar Woods Grill and Pier Restaurant Ratings and Reviews
The food and ambiance was good as always. Our waiter was wonderful. However I was very disappointed with the management who refused to seat us at window table because we were a party of 7 and they have a policy against pushing tables together. What?! The restaurant was empty and it was a Monday night and we were forced to sit at subpar location towards back of restaurant while an entire line of window seats sat empty . This made no sense and represented extremely poor service in my opinion.
Everything about our evening was excellent! The picturesque setting on the lake, set the evening off well along with our attentive waiter. Most of us had the swordfish special which we would all highly recommend along with their tasty house salad. Good wine selection too.
This place pretends to be a "higher" value restaurant by having pretty steep prices, but it definitely fails to deliver.
Wine get's served in very thick glasses which ruins the experience, there's no decent alternative to alcoholic beverages; a page of cocktails, a page of wines, but only non alcoholic beverages are water or sodas.
My wife's fish was totally overcooked ruining the taste, my very expensive lamb rack was tasteless.
Very disappointed by this experience
Let me first say that this place is vey pretensions. Came here on New Year's Eve. And it was so loud I think there was a live dj. All we heard all night was bass and people screaming. We couldn't even hear each other talk. Ok now I know some people might like that because it's New Years and there drinking so I sorta understand, but that is not what was terrible about this place. I just wanted to get that out there if you are looking for a nice romantic intimate dinner with your significant other. GO FAR AWAY FROM HERE.
The door staff here is TERRIBLE. rude as can be. Just a bunch of uptight trust fund girls in there 20s. Our waitress luckily was nice. Don't remember her name but she had curly blonde hair and had personality.
The 2 person table we sat at was the worst. The base was large so yay couldn't push your chair in close to the table you had to lean the whole night in either eating or practically scream to talk to your partner over the music. The chairs, omg the chairs were so rickity we both thought at any movement they would break. They moved so far back and fourth. So dinner was very uncomfortable.
So we get the food and I had the lobster and fillet I asked for medium with a light pink in the middle of my steak. It was rare and it was wrapped in bacon which the bacon was very stringy and chewy. The steak was bland. The mashed potatoes were suppose to be garlic but were also bland. The lobster had no flavor and dipping it in butter if that's what they call it. The butter just tasted like oil it real butter. I think they used margarine. I know most of your clientele is rich white people but season something for gods sake. The shrimp in her dish was over cooked. the food sucked. The best part of the meal was the snickers cheesecake. That actually was very good. The crust was incredible and cheese cake was creamy and delicious.
I seriously wish I would have went to Denny's Hahaha I would have gotten better food and staff honestly.
Came here for a New Year's Eve dinner. The hostess took our name and then proceeded to ignore us. She did this for several other parties who had arrived. It was only until we complained another hostess arrived and brought order to the hostess desk.
Our waitress was fantastic. Was quick and efficient despite the numerous other tables she had to deal with that. She was clearly stressed but maintained a smile and exuded a warm personality.
Toward the end of the evening as it got closer to midnight, the hostess came around and threw hats onto our table without any warning. Didn't even acknowledge that we were eating and throwing items on a table abruptly was rude. She came around a second time and this time handed out New Year's favors to other tables, but for some reason ignored ours. Another hostess came around a little later and did the exact same. Not sure if done absentmindedly or if they were purposely ignoring us. At that point, we chose to abandon our meal and spend our evening elsewhere. Definitely not a place I would recommend due to poor treatment.
Very disappointing on New Year's Eve. We've had many enjoyable lunches on their deck in the summer. If this was typical, the dining room should be avoided.
The good. My wife's Wet Woody and the by the glass viognier were both very nice.
The rest. Upon arrival rather than a friendly "Happy New Year, do you have a reservation" we got a barely audible "hi". The lobster bisque and onion soup were both unremarkable, at best. The kitchen failed to pace the order - our entrees arrived before we'd finished our soup. And at a table of two, the servers weren't sure which entree went to which diner. Our server checked in once during dinner - immediately after the entrees were served, while we each continued working on the soup. My filet, ordered medium, was served medium-rare. My wife found the risotto not really worth the effort after a few bites. Our water glasses were not refilled.
Gar Woods has a great location for a summer lunch on their deck. The summer staff is friendlier and more competent. Don't bother with the dining room.
We often visit Gar Woods when in Tahoe. We love the variety of Wet Woodys and their great bar food. The ambiance is super fun. In this occasion it was Christmas Eve and the first time I had a bad experience which was immediately solved. Maybe because it was late and they were very busy, but I had to send my steak back. It was just not worth the $50 it cost. They immediately got me another one and it was fine. I’m definitely going back again. The service was excellent.
Had a family Dinner for 8, including two small children. We were able to get reservations with fairly short notice, location was fantastic for first time Tahoe visitors in our group. Got great Pre- Dinner sunset photos on their pier! Fantastic food, very large portions- split one plate and was glad we did. Pricey kids menu, ($12 PBJ?!?) but other than that it was all delicious food, fantastic fish and seafood options, with good service. Highly recommend this spot!!! We have had casual summer lunches and drinks on the deck and that was just as awesome. More formal and upgraded menu inside.
Service was unprofessional and food was very overpriced. One of the dishes; roasted chicken, was not as described on the menu and the steak was undercooked and not very tender. One of the glasses of wine was served in a dirty glass and when we told the waiter, he just poured it into another glass
My wife and I chose to enjoy Thanksgiving Dinner at Gar Woods. We elected to sit outside and enjoy the most spectacular view of Lake Tahoe. Service was very attentive and punctual. Little or no wait to be seated. We enjoyed a very deliciouis price fix turkey dinner, compete with all the fixings. Good value for price. I highly recommend have a dinner there and enjoying the atmosphere.
I usually try and eat at Gar Woods at least once when I'm at Lake Tahoe. The service is excellent and so is the food. We had crab cakes that were some of the best I've eaten; lobster and crab bisque, that had plenty of chunks of both and was deliciously creamy and tasty; and I had white fish stuffed with crab and lobster that was delicious. We shared a generous hot fudge sundae, before waddling out of the restaurant.
