Great Italian food. The chef is from Tuscany.
Loved the mozzarella and eggplant salad. Servers were friendly and super helpful. The drink menu is fantastic.
My husband loved his gnocchis. Can’t wait to return.
Gallo Nero is my new favorite find. Fresh and unusual pastas. Great bean dishes. And the wine!
Food was great. It would have been great if portion sizes were a little bigger but overall very good. We will be back.
Love the food here and the staff are great. Too noisy of a corner to sit outside, will choose inside table in the future...hard choice because the location is great otherwise.
The portions are too small, the corkage is ridiculous for a restaurant like this, the ambiance does not do anything to encourage a return visit...candles would be nice. They are trying to be something they are not! The waitstaff tries too hard and come off as fake. They need a redo! The food is good which is why they should up their game with a better scene all around. It just doesn't feel like what they are attempting to be!! Corkage would be a good start! $25.00??? Way too much!! Pompous waiter! No candles on bare tables! Flowers would have been nice somewhere in the restaurant and the bar is a joke!! They definitely need a redo!!
Warm and friendly, cozy sized neighborhood gem of a space. Food is excellent and original. I was ver impressed with the bean dishes. Not something I would normally order in an Italian restaurant. The chef is from Tuscany and I guess the bean dishes are comfort food there. Can’t wait to go back and try more!
The server was awesome. He had a great sense of humor without being annoying. The food was very tasty. They have a great Italian wine list.
As always, we had a spectacular meal at Gallo Nero. Each course/bite was perfection. The only desire was that it would be easier to talk without so much noise from the other diners.
Always the best! Delicious food, great service and pleasant atmosphere.
Excellent Florentine dinner, served at the right pace. Waiters attentive, but not overly so. Diverse wine list includes some outstanding values. Warm and welcoming ambience. Has quickly become one of our favorites
One of our favorite authentic Italian Restaurants in Portland. Intimate with fresh made pasta and local ingredients. It is our “go to restaurant” before attending the theater.
My food was good, but the portion sizes were small. We needed to order more food than we had planned to get enough to eat, and I am a very small portion eater. That made this meal more expensive than the $$ rating indicates. The wines were excellent.
Always a good experience and authentic Italian food.
We had not been to Gallo Nero in some time and were pleased it was as good as we had remembered. The food, wine, and service were excellent, and the only problem we had were noisy “neighbors”. A man on the table next to us was speaking in a volume that probably could be heard two blocks away, and a larger group were very noisy while having drinks, but quietened down once they started eating. However, the quality we were receiving more than compensated for these distractions. The wait staff were efficient and knowledgeable, and our guy (the receipt said RCS) was quick to point out that the superb Verdure Forno were more than adequate for two people – and we do not know how anyone could not like vegetables after tasting these. He also said the wine I had chosen (it had to be a Chianti Classico in a restaurant called Gallo Nero!) was a one-year newer vintage than shown on the list before showing or opening the bottle – too many restaurants, even in such a wine-loving city, ignore such things. As we are not big eaters, we had just one course and my wife loved her Gnocchi with lox and peas and I loved my Filetta alla Chiantigiana – go with the chef’s recommended medium-rare. Finishing the meal with an espresso and an excellent Grappa rounded things off beautifully. Overall, the quality was very high, portions more than adequate, and pricing moderate by Portland standards. Even if the food was not as good as it was, I’d be back because of the excellent selection of Italian wines available by the glass and bottle.
Great food. Knowledgable waiter. Great experience. Already recommended it to others. Nice find.
The daily special (for Mother's Day) was awesome! The seafood-stuffed ravioli was WAY beyond delicious and the Dungeness crab appetizer was a great way to start our meal!
Excellent Italian food. If you like to eat true Italian food this is an one place that you need to go.
Great meal and attentive staff. Would recommend the extensive wine list!
We love your restaurant, esp outside on a warm day.
Fabulous from start to finish! The food was outstanding and the server was not only attentive to our every need, he was knowledgeable about wines and the dishes!
This restaurant came highly recommended and it surpassed our expectations!
First class authentic Italian food based upon Tuscan rustic dishes . Excellent but slightly expensive wine list of really good quality Italian wines. Friendly efficient service. Nightly recommend you visit
Nice! Great food and friendly service.
The service, food, and vibe here is always wonderful, warm, and welcoming.
A local favorite.
Quality of the pasta was mediocre. The dough was too thick. The fettuccine in the sampler were broken and short. The octopus pasta was quite bland. Strozzapreti were good.
Food quality not up to par with competition. Polenta was pasty and certainly not crisp. Bruschetta Gorgonzola was fine. Caprese salad fresh. Lasagna had way too much béchamel sauce and very little meat. Sauce on the Pollo Limone broken and chicken very tough. No follow-up service asking why chicken dish barely touched.
The staff was very friendly and attentive. We were on a bit of a time schedule to make it to a play at the Armory, but the food came out quickly and we ended up having plenty of time. We split the warm kale salad, and my lasagna was awesome, and my wife loved her risotto. We shared a beautiful Nebbiolo and split a gelato for dessert. Dinner for two with a bottle of wine came to $110 with tip.
We had a lovely Easter lunch with the family. It was great, but the. It’s great always ‼️
Wonderful food, wine and ambiance. Very friendly and accommodating staff. We also appreciated it was not noisy even though the place was quite full. That was a plus for four friends catching up on our lives.
Will definitely go back to try more of the menu. The Tonno Insalata....molto buono!!!
Food was outstanding, with vegetarian as well as dairy-free and gluten-free diners. Try the mixed bruschetta plate as a group appetizer. The pasta was fresh and everything tasted delicious. Great presentation. The waiter was a bit of a showboat but he was attentive and friendly.
Always one of our favorite places in Portland. Highly recommended.
We enjoyed a delightful meal and exceptional service before the theatre. Bravo! We'll be back!
Service was excellent and food was good. Would recommend. However the dining area is small.
The food was good but nothing amazing. Something was missing, the meat sauce was adequate and pasta seemed fresh but overall not that flavorful. The eggplant dish was similar, good but not outstanding. The porcini bruschetta had lots of porcini mushrooms but needed something else to accompany them, also there was some grit in one. Our party of four was hoping for a home run and got a double instead.
Beautiful food, wonderful service, always a pleasure to go to this restaurant! They are definitely one of our Portland favorites!
Sometimes you discover a restaurant that you gladly visit every day of your journey. Not just to try everything on the menu, but because you legitimately love the people, service and atmosphere. Our waiter was incredible, as was the food! This unassuming spot was the highlight of our culinary journey in Portland.
great service, great food. my daughter had the lamb skewers and I had Gnocchi. Both were top notch.
Daniele cooked another great meal. My friends had the lamb and I had halibut. All excellent. I ordered the citrus and fennel salad, as I often do, and was pleasantly surprised to find that Daniele has improved the recipe, making a really good dish even better.
Best of all there are new Italian wines. Out of curiosity, we ordered a pinot noir from Northern Italy. It was superb! Who knew the Alto Adige can give Burgundy and Dundee a run for the money?
I visited Portland for a conference and stayed at a hotel nearby. I had the four-course prix fixe menu with wine pairings. The food was terrific - fresh, simple, elegant cuisine. The wine pairings were exceptional. I would give a five-star rating if I hadn't been so frustrated with the service by the end of the meal. My waiter seemed to be serving the majority of tables. The first three courses and service were flawless, but my entree was late coming out. The other wait staff noticed and alerted my waiter who was working the tables adjacent to mine as well as several larger parties around the corner of the dining area. I suspect he may have forgotten to put in my order because after he brought my aperitif, he asked me to remind him which main course I'd chosen. The halibut was so delicious and perfectly cooked, however, I resumed writing a glowing review in my head and decided to cap the evening off with a slice of lemon tart and an espresso, but I couldn't get the waiter's attention to even ask for the dessert menu, even as he continued to serve adjacent tables. It was as if I were invisible! When I was finally able ask, ten minutes went by and still no menu. I complained to the bus person when she asked if I needed more water. She alerted my waiter again, but after several more minutes with no response, I gave up and asked for my check from the other waiter. I left angry, $91 poorer and wondering if this is what happens to solo diners all the time.
Gallo Nero is our favorite Italian place in Portland! We like it because it is very authentic, simple dishes with very high quality ingredients. The bottom line is that it is delicious! Don;t miss the pear ravioli, Gnocchi, or pasta with prosciutto
Enjoyed this lovely trattoria that is so convenient for dinner before a show at the Armory. The ravioli was sublime, roasted vegetables just ok. Found the lemon dessert lacking, bland. The waiter was great, friendly and on point. All in all, a very nice, pleasant experience. Great place for conversation over a leisurely meal.
