About Gallaghers Steakhouse - Manhattan
Founded by former Ziegfield girl Helen Gallagher and the colorful gambler and sports enthusiast Jack Solomon, Gallaghers opened as a speakeasy and steakhouse in 1927. At that time, the height of Prohibition, a good stiff drink and a great steak were hard to find in New York – except, of course, at Gallaghers.
New Yorkers come for the world-class cocktails and incredible steak – prime beef dry-aged for 21 days in Gallaghers’ legendary windowed meat locker. The combination of all-natural dry aging and cooking it to perfection over hickory coals makes for a steak unlike any other found in New York.

Gallaghers Steakhouse - Manhattan Ratings and Reviews
My Fiance and I went for a special occasion and expected a super high end top notch steak and red wine experience. Unfortunately it wasn't to be. The tables are so close together it was completely impersonal, the waiter didn't know the wine list and I wasn't able to try a drop before I bought a bottle and the steak wasn't anything to write home about. Overall we were pretty disappointed - Wolfgangs, Keens or Benjamin's are far better experience in our opinion.
The Resturantt was in a good location. However the steak was very disappointing. I think for the price it should have been much bigger. Although it came out medium the way I ordered it. I was still hungry when I left. That's with desert to. So for 51bucks for a steak I would prefer the The Old HomeStead on 14St
old school steakhouse- professional waiters and bartenders that put those in my home town of Wash DC to shame. Filet mignon cooked to perfection medium rare as ordered- had filet with bone marrow crust added to flavor. Lobster cocktail for appetizer only so so. Cocktails at bar before dinner outstanding. Don was our barman- a true pro and good conversationalist, bartending for 45 years who takes real pride in his profession. Great music in bar area- a classy yet comfortable place with great steaks and hash brownse- will definitely return.
On arriving we were left to stand in the foyer for 15 minutes after our reservation time. Place was extremely busy. Shown to our table and felt far to crammed in, probs 4" between tables. Steak was good. Asked for rare and that's what we got. Would probably ask for medium rare if we went again. Service was ok considering how busy it was. For the price I would expect a more personal approach tbh. Just thought it was way too crowded.
Fabulous steaks at Gallagher’s! We stopped by before a Broadway show and enjoyed two delicious steaks: the NY strip and the Filet, both cooked to perfection! Enjoyed dinner and made the show with plenty of time to spare. Service was exceptional and appreciated the teamwork between servers. All in all a great dining experience in midtown!
From start to finish, dining at Gallagher's was a great experience. We were graciously greeted at the door and shown right to our table. Our waiter (sorry I don't recall his name) was very helpful and his service to us was impeccable. My friend and I both ordered the steak salad, which was excellent. We split a dessert, and were each given our own small piece instead of one plate. Overall, a special day for us was made even more special by our lovely experience at Gallagher's. We'll be back.
We arrived and our table was like 10 min late. finally, we were seated and it took a while for the waiter to come to the table. We finally ordered and the food was excellent but the waiter forgot my husband's wive( we had to remind him), and he never came to check how the food was. The assistant waiter was very nice.
An all time favorite.
If you want to experience New York you cannot do better than this restaurant.
It has been a family favorite for 50 years and it never disappoints.
Great food, great bar, and excellent beef. Pricey, yes, but it is well worth it.
Always make a reservation.
Year after year consistently the best restaurant in Manhattan . Our family has dined here many times for a decade or so and has enjoyed the steaks cooked to perfection and other choice menu options. We always order the seafood tower for 6 or so people and it is the best seafood dish in the whole world.
The service is impeccable, the staff attentive and food is always served hot, not easy when we're a table of eight. And we spend big bucks because our experience is always great.
One caveat though and I hope that I'm not noticing a trend here, we were not seated at our confirmed reserved time and had to stand around for 45 minutes without an explanation from they man who was at his little welcoming front door stand.
Is Gallagher's suffering from being too successful and so it is able to take advantage of its customers? Our family has stopped going to other trendy NY restaurants for this reason.
Perhaps it would be better to make reservations directly with the restaurant rather than through Open Table
