About Gallaghers Steakhouse - Manhattan
Founded by former Ziegfield girl Helen Gallagher and the colorful gambler and sports enthusiast Jack Solomon, Gallaghers opened as a speakeasy and steakhouse in 1927. At that time, the height of Prohibition, a good stiff drink and a great steak were hard to find in New York – except, of course, at Gallaghers.
New Yorkers come for the world-class cocktails and incredible steak – prime beef dry-aged for 21 days in Gallaghers’ legendary windowed meat locker. The combination of all-natural dry aging and cooking it to perfection over hickory coals makes for a steak unlike any other found in New York.

Gallaghers Steakhouse - Manhattan Ratings and Reviews
My husband and I went last night for our anniversary and had an amazing time. We got there 20 minutes early so went to the bar to get a drink and were seating exactly at the time of our reservations. Our steaks were both delicious and the waiters were great. They even sang us Happy Anniversary and brought us out a small cake! One note, the sides are huge. My husband and I got 2 to share and could not even come close to finishing half of each. Also their old fashion coctail is on point! Loved it all!!!
First visit last night on the 12/11. We sat in the corner right near the kitchen window where you can see the steaks being cooked. The 2 people who served us where brilliant (can't remember their names) but worked great as a team. The food was amazing! We ordered 2 sides but only needed the one as they as very big! Go for the Mac and cheese!! The steak were cooked to our request and were so tasty. We was so full up, so skipped desert but wish I could of squeezed in one. Definetly be returning on our next visit to nyc!
Prompt greeting, table was ready, kind and pleasant folks during the entire evening. Outstanding food and service, this was an early Holiday Trip, they made the evening. The staff explained the menu items and the outstanding specialty drinks and the extensive wine list. We will make the effort to spend another evening with them.
i was borderline angry when my expensive $104 steak arrived at my table cut up into pieces like mommy did when i was four.. in tiny pieces.
The waiters give you a song and dance of how they want to cut it from the bone for you back in the kitchen .. blah blah.. They never told us that when we ordered and it wasn't on the menu either. i don't know the real reason they do it.. but it was a real let down. The juice is totally out of the steak.
What is the point of ordering a big pricy steak unless it arrives in all its whole glory FRESH UNTOUCHED on a plate for you to do with what you wish since YOU are paying the bill.
I don't want some stranger hovering over my big paid for steak cutting it to oblivion and letting it sit there until someone can wheel it out on a cart.
I have been going there for thirty years. I had dinner there in May 2017. My experience this week was less than satisfactory. We ordered broccoli and got asparagus. We ordered a 2011 wine and got a 2012 with no price adjustment. All great things must pass. I won't be back.
I would say first and foremost is the service was excellent. For the food rating I thought the ribeye was smaller than expected and the seasoning was not up to snuff. In fact I had to use the salt shaker which for me is a no no at any good steakhouse. The crab cakes are up there as one of the best I've had and the fried calamari is not to be missed. Additionally the creamed spinach was excellent as were the german potatoes. Dessert is nothing to write home about so save the calories. Overall good meal had by all.
My wife’s first time to time sqr and broadway show. I wanted her to get the whole experience we dressed up went out for a nice dinner b4 the show. We had great service and a melt in ur mouth meal it was a little pricey but it wasn’t outrageous or unexpected. Great place to go for special occasions.
The restaurant is a steak house that has been around for 90 years and both me and my girlfriend ordered steak with a temp of rare plus and medium plus. They were both incorrect . My whole steak was finished by the time that she got hers and she then had to send it back again. Also when they served us they didn’t ask us to check our steaks like every steak house so by the time we cut in the watier left and it took sometime to find him. The beef tar tar was a 10 though. Also we ordered reg water not bottled and they tryed charging us for bottled. We eat out every week at a steak house and we’re not impressed. At the end they tryed to give us fruit comped for our inconvenience we suppose? Something more meaningful then that would of been better being that we couldn’t eat together and we ate separately.
Late dinner after a show last night. Vibrant dining room. Service , apps and cocktails all on pointe. The tomahawk for 2 was a beautiful cut though quite under seasoned. And the mashed potatoes .. we would not serve to our own guests at home. Bland and dry. For the price fell short of other steakhouses midtown.
Old school steak house with old school bartenders and servers. Great steaks and ambiance. Sadly, our server neglected us most of the evening. We waited for 20 minutes for a glass of house wine, got our bottle of wine before we even ordered because he never took our order. We were a group of four and we all felt snubbed. When the food came, it really was excellent, but the service left a bad taste in our mouths. I prefer to handle this kind of criticism in house rather than online, but apparently nobody cared that we were neglected, after we mentioned it to the Maitre D.
Lucky enough to get a last minute table for 2 while in town for a conference. Had a good view of the kitchen, which was fascinating. I was served the 10 oz filet, probably the best steak of my life. Lots of wine to choose from, but quite pricey. Great service and ambience.
The service was exceptional! The wait staff was very attentive, even helping put on my coat. We started our meal with a delicious clam chowder and a wonderful selection of fresh bread. Our entree was a 10 oz filet mignon and it was cooked to a perfect medium rare. The side dishes of mashed potatoes and creamed spinach were very good. We concluded our wonderful meal with the cheesecake and it was absolutely the best cheesecake I have ever eaten. I would definitely choose this exceptional restaurant again.
I’ve had great steaks all over the world, from Argentina to Australia and l’ve NEVER tasted such a tender piece of meat. We often hear the expression, “it simply melted in my mouth”....this wonderfully marbled beef could have easily been sliced with a butter knife. Slicing the meat, with the mashed potatoes, creamed spinach and over the top steak sauce was something l’ll never forget.
And, the ending....a cheese cake that was divine. Every time l visit NYC, l would appreciate the corner table again and enjoy a gorgeous meal stopped in time....an era when a patron is treated with dignity and old world charm.
Thank-you for the best steak lunch l’ve EVER had!
We booked a table for four on our visit to NYC and when we arrived at 8.20 for our table at 8.30 the host looked surprised that we turned up and we finally got seated at 9.10. This was the only disappointment with our visit the food was great and the service was the best we received all week in New York. Worth every penny and would certainly recommend any one who likes steak to visit.
