Gaetano's & Ristorantino Mediterraneo Ratings and Reviews
We opted to have Gaetano’s Tapas tasting. Loved every bite and enjoyed savoring the various taste presented that although were quite different complimented each other so well. Prepare yourself it is plenty of food and this was the Tapas tasting. Simply delicious.
The quality at Gaetano's is superb. Both my friend and I were on restricted diets (NO gluten) and have food allergies. Gaetano was there and he had the kitchen create a meal that was not only fabulous, but within ALL our restrictions. This place is a local gem and worth every penny. My absolute go to favorite place. And the wines are outstanding, too!
Really great Italian. Innovative recipes and choices. Beautifully presented. Service is outstanding. Note: the items on the menu are flavorful, fresh but rich. Lots of butter. Not the place for you if you're dieting. Everything is so good you'll want to try it all!
As much Sicilian as Italian, food offerings are unlike virtually any other places, with flavor combinations and textures unencountered elsewhere. Dish originality includes varieties of homemade pasta (including ravioli filled with unusual combinations), dessert in a flowerpot, chocolate powder paired with seafood, truffles served with several dishes. Service is combo friendly/knowledgeable with several there for many years. Many first-timers we've taken here react (without prompting) to 1st or 2nd dish with a sign of recognition that this is anything but a neighborhood Italian restaurant, it's someone who loves/knows food, is willing to take chances, and achieves a level of competence better than 2- to 2 1/2- times as expensive downtown restaurants.
We had an excellent meal and very good service. I can understand how Gaetano's rates very high with foodies and lovers of great Italian food. This is definitely a special occasion place for most people because prices are definitely in the upper, upper bracket. We ordered off the menu rather than choosing from the $60 and $75 special tasting menu so we could each order our favorite choices. Be careful with alcoholic beverages at Gaetano's as they will push up your check total very quickly. I think $55. for an average to slightly above average bottle of Chardonnay is rather steep. That said, every dish we ordered tasted terrific. Portion sizes were modest but adequate.
A plus for food quality, B minus for funky ambience, C minus for bang for the buck.
Enjoyed the speck and fog appetizer very much. Mussels were plumb and the brith was excellent. Did not like the grated cheese on them. The chefs favorite pasta was excellent. Flourless chocolate cake just ok. Bread and hummus were great. Would give it another try.
Gaetano's continues to be my go-to restaurant in the greater Chicago area. I drive an hour to get there and once I walk in the door, I'm transported to another place. Gaetano is always in house and is the most creative chef I've ever come across, and, one of the most gracious hosts you will ever meet. He's also chosen a first class wait staff which really puts forth an effort for you to enjoy the dining experience. Every time we visit there's always a bounty of specials to try which take advantage of seasonal ingredients in the mind and hands of a master chef.
Eating here with either of the chef's tasting menus is an incredible joy. We were a group of 6, and every taste of each dish elicited a round of ooooh's from everyone at the table. Gaetano is an amazing and talented and creative chef and he delights in wanting everyone to have a wonderful time. Highly recommended!
We went to Gaetano's for a dinner with friends. The service was great, the restaurant was appealing, and the food was delicious. The pasta dishes were pricy but worth it. I had a parpadalle dish with wild boar and mushrooms; I thought I was back in Tuscany. They have a delicious soup and the desserts were to die for.
Gaetano's is a favorite of mine - we've been here a dozen times for special occasions and [calorically] extravagant meals. Yet, each time we come, it's as exceptional as the first time we visited.
This visit was 'it's been a long week and we need something delicious' - so I got the Chef's Delight (an incredible pasta in cream sauce with freshly grated truffle), and my husband got the most wonderful steak with asparagus and horseradish. He also enjoyed what he described as the 'best manhattan I've ever had' - which is high praise coming from a man with an appreciation for excellent cocktails.
Every single thing we had comprised incredibly high quality ingredients, all very fresh, and brought together in stunning flavor combinations. Our dessert was bread pudding - but that is too pedestrian a name for the incredible concoction we were served.
Suffice it to say - we will be back, with bells on.
We have a great time and great food every time we go. I can't say enough about this place and the staff. If you are looking for something truly special, you can't go wrong here. I have friends that come in from out of town almost every other month and we make an attempt to go to some great restaurants. Gaetano's is the only restaurant that they demand we revisit!
