My husband and I went to celebrate Valentine's Day. The atmosphere was very intimate and romantic. The special menu was a good value for the amount of food we received. The food was superb. I will definitely go back.

This is the resteraunt that I go to for Valentine's Day and our anniversary. It is quiet candlelight dinner and a bit of history, too.

The food, the service, and the atmosphere in Gadsby's was fantastic! Exactly, what you're looking for if you want a quiet evening out with a special someone. The authenticity of the restaurant and menu really make this a fine dining experience. There is even an older gentleman, in full period-specific garb, who wanders around and personally engages each table in small talk, flattery, and (for a nominal fee) will even light up the room with love song customized to your Better Half.....keep an eye on him, he is QUITE the smooth talker.

We dined there on Valentine's day just after landing at Washington National. That evening had a fixed menu with 3 choices, and was rather pricey considering the limited selection and modest portions. I had sea bass that I enjoyed, while my wife had duck that was very fatty yet tough to get into. She only tackled about half of it before giving up. So the fixed menu wasn't very good for us, and we can't comment on the regular menu. The restaurant was genuinely historic and charming, the atmosphere was delightful, service was good, and the strolling entertainment was fun. But the food (at least on that night) was somewhat of a disappointment.

There was nothing not to like about Gadsby's. The food and service was excellent and prices were in line with other Alexandria restaurants. The peanut soup is a "must try" when visiting Gadsby's.

The food and ambiance was excellent; however, the server seemed more interested in taking with a limited set of clientele than serving customers. In addition, there was a tremendous amount of disturbing noise from an upstairs ballroom.

We felt slightly rushed as each item came very close together. Food was good but prices seemed high for the quality. Authentic setting and costumes of the servers.

This is a lovely, historic spot in Olde Town Alexandria -- it's not quite on the water or in the middle of the downtown bustle, but it was a nice after-dinner walk to the water and refreshing to be a bit removed from the bustle anyways. The waiting staff was very friendly and the pictures online do not do the atmosphere justice -- it's an old-style, wood-floor and high-ceiling building, and Gadsby's has done a wonderful job of preserving its character.

We came here for restaurant week expecting a kitschy tourist trap. It turns out that it’s a charming place with good food, wonderful atmosphere, and great staff. Kate, our waitress, was extraordinarily busy but handled her tables wonderfully. The wine list was better than I expected, and drinks from the bar were great.

Great venue and theme and the food for Restaurant Week was fantastic. My only complaint was that it was very cold outside and we were seated in the first room; every time the door opened we had a blast of cold air... made for a chilly experience. Perhaps they shouldn't seat guests there on the colder days as there were tables available in the larger dining room.

We enjoyed a nice lunch at Gadsby’s Tavern. It was a get together of friends and the server was attentive and well versed in the menu. We enjoyed the warm cider with rum which was particularly nice on a chilly day and there was a nice selection of local craft beer.

Is it possible that a restaurant can give you too much food? That's what happened during Alexandria's Restaurant Week. We decided to go with the pre fixe menu, and anticipated the usual reduced portions that often come with the $35 price, but what was delivered to the table was just the opposite. The appetizers seemed a fair size, but it was the entree & desert that really surprised. We both order the prime rib fully expecting to receive a couple of slices of medium rare meat, but instead we go a inch thick steak that practically took up the entire plate. It was perfectly prepared. Next came a full-sized desert which was difficult to consume, but at leas I managed. We both walked out of Gadsby's Tavern over-fed, but quite contented.

It was our first visit to Gadsby's Tavern even though we have lived in the area for many, many years. We ordered from the Restaurant Week menu and the food was just excellent. Most of the table ordered the prime rib as our main course and it was fantastic. The meat was so tender and tasty. Great service and a very gracious Colonial gentleman went from table to table to engage the dinners in some "formal" conversation. It was a lovely evening. We will certainly be returning again soon.

We made a reservation and had to wait 20 minutes to be seated, in spite of an empty table of our party size sitting empty. We were given no accommodation for our wait. The hostess didn't seem to understand the inconvenience at all. Once seated we ordered champagne. First they brought the wrong bottle. Then they brought the right one. We opened and poured. There was no ice bucket (guess George Washington didn't have that) and the waiter said he'd get one. The champagne sat and sat out of ice, again a good 10-15 minutes. The server was sweet. As we left the room was empty and two waiters were speaking in Spanish. They didn't realize two people in our party spoke Spanish. They were using very vulgar words. Staff training is poor. And while we sat on a bench watching the front door open and close waiting for our table, we noticed big strips of paint/stain off the door. It was an easy fix. But ignored.

I know folks rave about the service here. Chalk this up to a bad night for our server, who I sense was split between two many tables (including a large party of 10 right next to us). It was 20-30 minutes into our visit before we were finally, but abruptly asked if we were ready to order ... no discussion of specials, recommendations, etc. .... it took us over an hour to just get a couple glasses of wine; two appetizers actually came before that (so the kitchen was on top of things) ... fried oysters and a potato soup. Both were lifeless and bland. We cut our losses and went elsewhere, and are unlikely to ever return (a shame, as we live in the neighborhood and eat out frequently). If you do eat here, aim for the main dining room (and not the room by the door with the bar). It felt like we were trying to dine on the beltway.

We very much enjoyed the historic ambiance and the central location in Old Town. Our waiter, Alexander, was excellent. The menu was varied enough for each of the four diners and the food was very satisfying. We would love to return. Thank you.

Colonial-era tavern plain wood furnishings and the soft lighting and candles on every table, and even the slight reverberation of voices, give Gadsby's Tavern a feel of pub-like intimacy and charm and a moment out of time. The food was simple as befits the Colonial era, but surprisingly first-rate. We ordered filet mignon and prime rib, both of which were reasonably priced, were cooked as requested, and were delicious as was their Shepherd's Pie. Vegetables were not overcooked as they often are with meat, but just right. The hard cider was perfect for a cold winter evening. The period-dressed waitresses and waiter were attentive but not intrusive; food was served in good time. A perfect family birthday dinner.

We arrived between the lunch and dinner crowd, so the restaurant was quiet. The Tavern is over two hundred years old and reflects the period atmosphere but was clean and pleasant. Our waitress, Jeannie, was very pleasant and helpful recommending dishes and checking up on us. Food was fabulous. Apparently everything is homemade and tastes it. My only issue is that since I work in the area, I should have tried eating there a long time ago! We will be back!

Great service!! I requested Jameson neat as part of the notes on the reservation and when we were seated it arrived. Made the birthday treat for my husband that much better. He ordered the duck and I ordered the meatloaf. So much food we couldn’t finish. It was amazing too so we hated to leave it! Our dessert was the cider with rum and it warmed us right up before heading out. Only downside was a large party was seated next to us towards the end of our date. But great experience overall.

This is a wonderful little restaurant set in a cozy, authentic, well preserved colonial period tavern. Food may be a bit pricey, but is served in generous portions and can be shared. Servers are dressed in 18th century attire, and are attentive without being intrusive. We fully expected to see Benjamin Franklin or George Washington at a nearby table. If you're a history lover with an active imagination, maybe you will see them.

Good food, if a bit pricey, and fun historical aspect. We went during the holidays, so it was nicely decorated and the ambiance was good - not super quiet, but easy to hear your tablemates. We went to celebrate a family members' anniversary and enjoyed the experience, including the appearance and brief speech by a "colonial" gentleman.

Add a little fun to your visit by sharing the story about the "female stranger" connected to the tavern.
