Gadsby's Tavern Ratings and Reviews
Colonial-era tavern plain wood furnishings and the soft lighting and candles on every table, and even the slight reverberation of voices, give Gadsby's Tavern a feel of pub-like intimacy and charm and a moment out of time. The food was simple as befits the Colonial era, but surprisingly first-rate. We ordered filet mignon and prime rib, both of which were reasonably priced, were cooked as requested, and were delicious as was their Shepherd's Pie. Vegetables were not overcooked as they often are with meat, but just right. The hard cider was perfect for a cold winter evening. The period-dressed waitresses and waiter were attentive but not intrusive; food was served in good time. A perfect family birthday dinner.
We arrived between the lunch and dinner crowd, so the restaurant was quiet. The Tavern is over two hundred years old and reflects the period atmosphere but was clean and pleasant. Our waitress, Jeannie, was very pleasant and helpful recommending dishes and checking up on us. Food was fabulous. Apparently everything is homemade and tastes it. My only issue is that since I work in the area, I should have tried eating there a long time ago! We will be back!
Great service!! I requested Jameson neat as part of the notes on the reservation and when we were seated it arrived. Made the birthday treat for my husband that much better. He ordered the duck and I ordered the meatloaf. So much food we couldn’t finish. It was amazing too so we hated to leave it! Our dessert was the cider with rum and it warmed us right up before heading out. Only downside was a large party was seated next to us towards the end of our date. But great experience overall.
This is a wonderful little restaurant set in a cozy, authentic, well preserved colonial period tavern. Food may be a bit pricey, but is served in generous portions and can be shared. Servers are dressed in 18th century attire, and are attentive without being intrusive. We fully expected to see Benjamin Franklin or George Washington at a nearby table. If you're a history lover with an active imagination, maybe you will see them.
Gadsby’s is a must! Excellent food and phenomenal Service- Debbie did an excellent job making us feel welcome. The fact that this restaurant has hosted George Washington, Alexander Hamilton, Thomas Jefferson and other revolutionary heroes is amazing. I love this place and you will too!
Good food, if a bit pricey, and fun historical aspect. We went during the holidays, so it was nicely decorated and the ambiance was good - not super quiet, but easy to hear your tablemates. We went to celebrate a family members' anniversary and enjoyed the experience, including the appearance and brief speech by a "colonial" gentleman.
Add a little fun to your visit by sharing the story about the "female stranger" connected to the tavern.
We stopped in for a family gathering dinner just after Christmas. The service was very good, as was the food and wine selection. We also really enjoyed the visit from Mr Hall (John Douglas Hall) who humorously portrays an Alexandria citizen from the colonial times.
Food great but service was awful. We arrived at 5:45 and left at 8:15. LOOOONG TIME between service... would recommend the middle room, as has more character. Also left empty glasses and plates when cleaning..... Six of us so forced into a $50 tip. WOULD NOT HAVE LEFT THAT MUCH.
Pleasantly Surprised! The historic attraction would make this a very worth place to dine with perhaps low expectations for all the rest. Boy was I wrong. The food and service was simply excellent, and I would happily go back again and again! I was with a group of 4, and we all felt the same - we couldn't be happier. And the other surprise was cost, the menu items not only offered plenty to choose from, the wine list was very good and reasonable.
We were seated in the small section of the restaurant near the front door, rather than in the beautiful area in the adjacent dining room. Every time someone opened the door, the cold wind blew right into our table. Had we known, we would have selected a different restaurant. The experience was definitely not what we expected based on the reviews. Highly disappointed.
Benningsdorf here several times and this visit was the worst one so far. Service was non existent for about the first 15 minutes, but did get a little better once the waiter finally showed up. I’ll chalk this visit up to a one off, since my past visits I’ve had good service. The food as always was really really good and plenty of it.
Gadsby's was a wonderful place to have a get together with friends. It is historic, very interesting, and an unusual place. The food was wonderful (with some interesting period food to choose as well), a good selection of wine, and very reasonable. I will definitely return. Make sure to make reservations as it was packed!
Went to Gadsby's with my extended family for a dinner during the Thanksgiving weekend. The staff was friendly and very accommodating. They were able to find us a table where all 8 of us could sit together. Great ambiance. The waitress was able to get the kitchen to make a pasta dish that wasn't on the menu for my niece. Good service. The salmon dish wasn't too tasty but the rest of the food was fine. I loved the history of the place!
