Review summary

AI-generated from verified diner reviews
Gadsby's Tavern offers a unique historical dining experience with "great food and service" in the heart of Old Town. Guests enjoy the colonial ambiance and attentive staff, with standout dishes like the crab cakes and filet mignon. While some note room for improvement in decor and temperature control, the "delicious" menu and charming atmosphere captivate many visitors.

We had previously eaten here and had a wonderful experience with excellent food and service. This time, it was disappointing to be kind. The food came out cold, the service was very slow, the food quality was not at all up to expectations based on previous visit and reputation. I can't totally blame the server since the restaurant is severely understaffed. But since the food was served cold, she is at least partly to blame as she should have warmed to food before serving. I asked for a drink and it took her over 30 minutes to bring it! We enjoyed the atmosphere and history of this tavern, but that was about it. Very disappointed.

Best crab cakes I’ve had in a long time!! Scrumptious! Service was great. Our server was very friendly. The atmosphere, while historic, needed some TLC. The ceiling was peeling. The tables were sticky. Needed a refresh. But the food was delicious!

The service and food were very good. We enjoyed meeting Mr. Hall, he was very entertaining and added to our experience. The tavern was very warm inside and a little uncomfortable in the summer heat.

Nice brunch on a Sunday that was rather crowded around Alexandria. Good value. The place looks old but I guess that is the intention, saying George Washington ate here. Would not mind coming back.

Understaffed and hot and it’s not even August. They had a fan blowing from the chimney to our table, who knows what soot ended up on my plate and in my mouth.

If you take away anything from this review, it is that you should not order the prime rib or George Washington's favorite (the duck entree). The only good things we had here were the ham biscuits and water. I ordered the prime rib rare, which was completely overcooked and tough (I have never been to golden corral but the prime rib there is probably better). My wife ordered the duck entree and took one bite and spit it out. The duck was overcooked as well and was very rubbery. We had high hopes for the historic restaurant but were severely let down. In the end, I would avoid coming here altogether because the ambiance was weird as well. All of the guests were put into the same tiny room, and we could all hear each other's conversations. We had to whisper the entire time. We will never be coming back and will tell everyone we know to avoid it at all costs. I wouldn't go back even if it were free. Update: After reading more reviews it seems that this has been going on for quite a while. Food is horrible and service is lackluster with the waiters not having any knowledge of the menu. Feels more like a tourist trap than anything. Old Town Alexandria has so much to offer please avoid this overpriced dump. If the owner is reading this you should just make this place a historic bar. You would increase your income and would not have to worry about making these terrible dishes anymore.

Attentive staff and excellent food in a historic restaurant. Loved the extensive use of wood and wood plank floors.
