Gabriela's Ratings and Reviews
Gabriela's is warm and welcoming and full of great aromas. The menu and the staff pay attention to allergies and special needs in a careful but casual way, so you don't feel pressured. The food feels like Mexican home cooking. The bar is busy and it can get noisy, but it is a friendly place and that vibe extends throughout the room.
We enjoy this restaurant as it is an easy go to neighborhood place, but you do frequently, once it gets colder and they are unable to offer outdoor seating, need a reservation. The food is fine. I wish they would change the menu once in awhile and try to new Mexican cuisine rather than always sticking with the predictable. Service is very very nice.
The food was VERY delicious, and authentic, but a bit pricey for what it was (simple, mexican fare and basic ingredients). It was hard to find a solid $10-12 entree. That would have been nice, as a working student trying to keep the brunch bill manageable. The choices ranged from $14 -$25 entrees and $6-8 single ala carte items and soups. I loved the Margarita, it was so delicious. The service we received was very fair, he checked when supposed to and didn't forget anything, but had a very blah personality and wasn't very emotive or warm. It was a bit of a bummer since Gabriela's has such a great reputation in the city and it was my first time at the restaurant and I was really looking forward to it. The experience would have been much better with a wait person who was excited and enthused, or least smiled and greeted himself. Since he was so blah, it was kind of put a damper on the whole thing. Outdoor seating was fantastic and thanks to open-air design and high roofs, noise was not an issue at all. Very comfortable seating and it didn't feel too cramped, as it often does in Manhattan dining. Even so, I would like to come back!
As a devout foodie, Gabriela's was at the top of my list for delicious Mexican food, beautiful cocktails and upper west side ambience. My crew and I have been coming out to hang at Gabriela's for over four years. There are usually ten of us. Last night, Sept. 9th will probably the last night I bring a large party due to the new hostess and waiter combo that we encountered. I was totally ready to start ordering food before my crew showed up but because I had a reservation for 8, I could not sit at the table until half my party showed up. I am not a bar person so I stood outside starving almost an hour. When we had three people I asked to change the table reserved from eight into four because there were a few friends who could not come. No problem we received a beautiful table outdoors. It was a nice evening. We had an unpleasant waiter. We kept having to find him to order our drinks and appetizers. One of our friends called and said they would be coming late. The hostess/waiter team informed us that we would need to move to another table instead of pulling up another chair. The food was excellent, drinks were stellar so I ordered another appetizer to go which never arrived but I paid for it so I had to ask for my money back. We asked the waiter to provide separate checks at the beginning of our service because he did not do this, we ended the evening trying to clear up the overpayment by asking all of my guest what they paid. This was one unpleasant experience out of several pleasurable ones….I might be willing to try again…not sure.
The service was AWFUL! I would never write a review unless it was warranted. I'm pretty positive we didn't have a waiter or waitress because we waited for 15 minutes before having to flag down someone. We had to ask for water. They set down our entrée that we were splitting in front of us with missing tortillas and no plates for us to use so we had to use the place mats as plates because I asked for side plates and never got them. We never got a dessert menu. And again we had to waive someone down for the bill after waiting. What was odd, was that the table to our left and the table to our right were receiving great service, so it was literally as if no one was assigned our table and we were just forgotten about. Disappointing because I love their food. Unfortunately when two bartenders go out to dinner and the service is that awful, we won't be back. It takes A LOT for me to say that as well and I feel awful doing so. I hope Gabriela's gets it together -- really disappointing.
Went to Gabriela's for the first time and can't believe it took us so long to go. Conveniently located in the UWS and easy to book, the place was buzzing when we got there. The food was amazing - ordered a number of different appetizers to try as much as possible; great vibe; lovely service - a true neighborhood gem that we will visit again for sure!
The food and service at Gabriela's are both wonderful. The restaurant was full of large tables having a great time buy that also made it impossible for our table of three to hear each other! I think we would have been better seated outside, but it was a rainy, cold night!
Our group of 5 waited a long while for initial order of drinks. We didn't receive them until after our food was delivered. They had sat and we're mostly melted and watery. One guest asked four times for a coffee refill. We sent drinks back, waited another ten minutes for new drinks, also sub par. We asked six different workers for water refills. Asked multiple times for food additions. And the restaurant wasn't really that busy. No excuse for such poor service.
We went for my daughter's birthday and have been other times. It was just right for a casual, fun celebration. It has an old school Mexican restaurant feel if you're in the mood for that scene, and the margaritas were good (skinny available too if you don't need sweet, they're strong). Service was good this time although has been less friendly in the past. Perhaps this has been corrected. Everyone enjoyed their meals. I love that it's do spacious. No bumping elbows. It's not gourmet, but for fun, fairly casual Mexican (and drinks) in an authentic atmosphere (considering it's UWS) it hits the spot. Loved the ceviche.
Went to Gabriela's for brunch with some friends. Had been there for dinner in the past and enjoyed the food and service. Was disappointed this time. Food was generously portioned but bland. Even the Greek diner in my neighborhood makes tastier huevos rancheros. Everyone at the table reached for the bottle of hot sauce to help offset the blah flavor of their food. The salsa for the chips came in tiny little bowls which were not refilled, despite our repeated requests. Service was awkward, at best. It felt as if we never fully communicated with the server. There was a lot of confusion.
I don't know that I will return anytime soon.
We had a fabulous girls dinner at Gabriela's to celebrate a friends birthday. The food was great, we had a mixed appetizer plate to share, then a few entrees. The rainbow margaritas were perfect. The service was wonderful, they didn't make us feel rushed even though it was a busy night and I'm sure they could have used the tables. I always love it here.
Came here for my birthday dinner with a friend. Had reservations for 730, showed up ungodly early and was seated right away. Waitress was a little helicopter at the beginning asking for drink orders as soon as we sat down. Gave us the specials menu with drinks on one side and food on the other. Since she was in such a hurry we ordered drinks before looking at the food specials and never got a chance to actually see the food specials because she took that menu away as soon as we ordered the drinks. We also ordered guacamole to go with the awesome chips, but it never arrived. Thankfully we were not charged for it. I don't think I got the drink I actually ordered, but what I got was good so I didn't complain. Food was delicious, just wish we had gotten the guacamole and some more chips. Immediately after our food came out the waitress was there to see how it was, before we got to take a bite. Then we never saw her again until our plates were empty. No offer for drink refills until she was clearing our plates. We had to ask for a dessert menu, after she just stared at us waiting for our dessert order as if we already knew what was on the menu. Maybe she was new or she was fill in for the busy night (Valentine's Day) or they really need to work on training staff better. I will go again because the food and drinks were great, and hope for better service.
...try this spot. Of course, this isn't the only tequila bar and restaurant in town, but I was told they do have 175 tequilas on the menu...which is 175 more than I have at home.
The highlight was a little education and discussion on the basics of tequila, which is the reason why I came. The service, otherwise, wasn't especially good at that time.
The food itself wasn't bad, but not great. Perhaps other menu choices would have pleased us more.
I meet a group of friends here several times a year to celebrate our birthdays. We always have a festive time with good margaritas (the horchata is a great non-alcoholic alternative), good food and excellent, friendly service. Excellent quality, reasonable prices. There are always neighborhood people dining there -- a good recommendation -- including families with young children.
Waiter was great- helpful and attentive but not pushy. He gave us, a party of four, complimentary mini pina coladas since it was a birthday celebration. Food was delicious! The vegetable quesadilla was very tasty and not run-of-the-mill. Good mini mango margarita too. I always like Gabriela's for better Mexican food with a unique atmosphere. It has a special neighborhood ambience.
Even though it the service was good. I didn't find the meals being tasty enough. The mexican flavors and cusine just did not come thru in the food. The Guacamole was very cold from the fridge, when a guacomole is freshly done and served at room temperature if has better consistency and taste. Additionally, the portion of guacomole is a very small portion for the price.
I eat here many times a year. Food has always been excellent: guacamole, quesadillas, refried beans, plantains. This time we tried the "tacos," which arrived in a soft and tasteless tortilla with nothing inside but the meat. Will certainly return, but never order those tacos!
Went with my wife and two teenage, picky-eating sons. Great menu choices with enough variety for all. All the usual essentials for a Mexican brunch and a lot of fun, unique options from which to choose. Flexible kitchen (just have to be clear and articulate about what you want). Excellent coffee. Was empty when we arrived with a reservation at 11 am on Saturday. I would go back in a heartbeat. I imagine dinner to be just as terrific. Oh, the morning Margherita included with breakfast was fabulous, too.
My family of four ate here and we all enjoyed our meals. The portions are large. I ordered a salad and a quesadilla and could only eat half of each. The service was excellent and we did not have to wait long at all for our food. Overall I would certainly recommend it.
The food is always really delicious. I've eaten in the restaurant, at the bar, and have had delivery. I've met friends here, taken family here, and have taken out of town guests here as well. The margaritas are great - on the rocks or frozen and the beer selection is good too. It's fun to sit out on the patio in warmer weather to get drinks. Food faves: cheese quesadillas, burritos, soups, and their specialty rotisserie chicken.
