As we only had one night to eat out in LA, I spent some time reading about the various choices, trying to decide where to go. This restaurant appealed as the menu sounded interesting. It exceeded expectations. The staff were all very friendly, and the service was superb. Best of all, each dish we chose was delicious and something that I couldn’t have cooked at home. The flavour combinations and presentation were perfect. The cauliflower and kale appetizers were both wonderful and our fish entrees were equally good. We tried both desserts, and again they were both faultless. We had to go for a long walk afterwards to work off some of our meal; it was worth it! The space is just a little crowded but the atmosphere was good. We hope to return.
Tables too close together
Good food. Super easy. Not too loud. Twice there, twice happy.
We are so excited to have this restaurant in our neighborhood. The food is inventive and delicious. The staff is friendly and courteous. They have a nice wine selection, too. I recommend making a reservation as it does get crowded. They also do terrific catering!
My son and I went to Fundamental when we were on vacation February 2018. We went specifically for their tasting menu. Unfortunately, they were not offering it the night we went. I explained the we were in from NY and wanted this experience. The waiter couldn't be nicer, spoke with the kitchen and created a tasting menu for us that evening...We had 5 courses of delicious food! We couldn't have been happier...I would go back every time I am in LA. Food and Service were EXCELLENT!!!
At the risk of repeating myself (we dined at Fundamental last Saturday night too), dinner was absolutely delicious and the service was, once again, fabulous!
Second visit & will be back again for sure. Food was great and Duck special was phenomenal. Place is very tight for group of 5, but enjoyed the night. Service was extremely nice and attentive, but was a bit confused. Too many people working the same table (not in sync i.e asking same question 3 secs later) cleared plates before everyone was done eating and wee bit rushed. Very good meal and will be back for sure and highly recommend. One other note - first glass of wine pour extremely small for $18 glass.
We love going to Fundamental and this last visit did not disappoint. From the very friendly welcome, we sat at the counter (our request), delicious bubbles to start, chickpea fritters, cauliflower with a lime sauce - amazing. Our main courses were equally as good - and of course had to finish with the chocolate mousse! Double thumbs up, no doubt about it!
Excellent & varied menu; food was healthy, fresh, delicious, interesting. Staff was friendly, just attentive enough. Flexible with reservation time (we came 45 minutes early and were seated immediately). It was a bit chilly when people came though the front door, but hot tea took care of the temperature. Churros with caramel were divine!!!
Great evening with delicious food. Wine selection is different but very good.
Sat at the kitchen bar. Interesting to watch ones’ food being prepared. Very tasty food and good happy hour prices.
Excellent little gem of a restaurant in Westwood. Excellent food, wines and service. Check it out for sure. You will not be disappointing.
We hadn't been to Fundamental LA in some time, but remembered it well and it definitely has held up over the years - delicious, fresh food and a fun wine list. The somm was super helpful and not pretentious, and we enjoyed every dish we tried (the cornbread is to die for). It ended up around $50 per person, all in, so very reasonable. The place is trendy and bright, with light wood. The only issue was that it's not a big place, so when it's busy and they've got the music up LOUD (as they tend to), it can be a little hard to have conversations. Otherwise, a really fun westside spot.
The restaurant decor and ambiance is modern and pleasant. Service is cheerful and attentive. We reserved for 3 but were given counter seats. It was difficult to chat and share food sitting in a row in a noisy environment. Our server apologized and suggested that we request a table on our next reservation. The food is excellent---lots of delicious small plates as well as entrees. It's a good place for sharing dishes. It's not cheap but the food is reasonably priced in my opinion for what you get.
I came here on a date several occasions, now that things are official between my boyfriend and I. It has become one of our favorite spots for date nights. We love sharing their vegetarian dishes. Everything is phenomenal, especially the cauliflower!
Really friendly service. Delicious food and lovely wine selections. Highly recommend!
Great spot for a quite date. My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed our night here.
This was our first time here and we hit this restaurant on what I hope was just a really off night. It smelled like there was a situation in the kitchen, the food took forever to arrive and the staff couldn’t quite explain what was going on in an intelligent way. We’ll try again.
Food was good, priced for how it tasted. Wine was great - nice per glass options and a mix-and-match flight deal. Overall a very nice dining experience, not overly flashy - just the right touch.
Good food and staff. Interesting wines. Try and cornbread and the burger and the chopped salad!
The taste combinations on everything we tried was very good. Some of the dishes were unique and very delightful combinations ingredients that you don't usually find.
I was told Open table tap was not available
The purple cauliflower with a Thai vinaigrette is a must! The other dishes were well presented and the flights of wine were a fun tasting experience, especially the orange wine. The servers were young and enthusiastic. The chocolate mousse was luscious. A memorable meal!
Wine list filled with unknown types and brands - paid $54 for a terrible blend. Food good - they made cheap fatty cuts of meat into tasty fatty entrees. Interior less attractive and less table space than Panera Bread.
This restaurant used to be great but has gone downhill. I know they've gone through many chefs and I hear lunch is great. Sad because there are so few in the neighborhood.
Great food. Service slow. Wine too warm. But I'll be back
Fundamental provided an absolutely delightful experience. The food was quite good, creative and well presented. The service was outstanding. The staff was knowledgeable and welcoming and attentive. It’s definitely a place to visit.
Overpriced inept service almost apathetic. Boring bland food I'm not sure what the hype is all about.
Great find in Westwood. Cozy, intimate place with delicious food and attentive service. We watched the cooking team prepare our meal from comfortable bar seats. Dine LA menu was great deal...outstanding gazpacho, nectarine salad, striped bass, and more...super fresh and beautifully presented. We will be back!
Very good restaurant, good food and excellent service
Good food and service, perfect place for a quality casual dining.
We had a great experience at fundamental LA. The food was delicious, a great wine selection, and the service was great. We chose the Dine LA menu, and the selections were good and the food was delicious.
Jus a bit surprised that the extensive wine list did not include a single cabernet. Was told that the wine curator liked to expose patrons to new experiences, but we had to settle for a not-so-good wine because the "by the glass" list was very small and rather undiscovered wines. It is good to cater to wine connaisseurs who want to be surprised, but you can also have foodies who want their staple good pinot or cab.
The food is amazing and worth the trip in any case. I just might not bring the friend who's knowledge in wine stays in the chianti/cab varietals.
One of the best dining experiences I had. Great wine selection and service.
Fun, different, tasty food. Sometimes they mix foods that aren't to my taste. For example, the cheesecake pudding was tasty but they had this guava icee on top of it. Two different desserts, each great separately but together?
Go at Happy Hour as otherwise it is expensive...
Love the decor. Unfortunately added a bit to the noise level, but simple, straightforward and comfortable. Service was attentive and helpful (letting us order on happy hour with only 5 minutes to go was very kind). We were remiss in not letting our server know that we were headed to the theater, so we created a bit of a jam in getting our food which was a bit slow. Very accomodating to allergies. Thank you.
Food was inventive, but a bit uneven. Cauliflower was terrific, albeit a bit spicier than I like. I liked the nectarine salad, but quite heavy on the nectarines. Others at the table liked their burgers which looked well prepared. Steak tartare was less exciting, though I liked the toast. Roasted vegetables were less exciting.
Overall, a decent meal and worth exploring again.
Dine at Confidential LA when Visitng from Canada with my 12-year Old on Daddy Daughter trip to California. Typically she can be a bit of picky eater. She LOVED it. As did I. So much so we went back two nights later. Highly recommend. Good for casual eve, or would be good for casual date night. Steak is amazing. As is the Cauliflower. Will visit again when back in LA.
Exceptional experience in every respect. Highly original cooking with unique flavor combinations that are beautifully prepared. Every dish was outstanding. Wine list eclectic and interesting. Enthusiastically recommended for those who appreciate quality food in a low-key setting.
I loved this place! I am definitely coming back. They have a great wine selection.
The sommelier led us to try really interesting and delicious wines. The food was outstanding. The sauces were light but full of wonderful flavor. Every dish was a knockout - yellowtail collar, hanger steak, shrimp, pork chops, and the cheese plate.
