fundamental LA Ratings and Reviews
We hadn't been to Fundamental LA in some time, but remembered it well and it definitely has held up over the years - delicious, fresh food and a fun wine list. The somm was super helpful and not pretentious, and we enjoyed every dish we tried (the cornbread is to die for). It ended up around $50 per person, all in, so very reasonable. The place is trendy and bright, with light wood. The only issue was that it's not a big place, so when it's busy and they've got the music up LOUD (as they tend to), it can be a little hard to have conversations. Otherwise, a really fun westside spot.
The restaurant decor and ambiance is modern and pleasant. Service is cheerful and attentive. We reserved for 3 but were given counter seats. It was difficult to chat and share food sitting in a row in a noisy environment. Our server apologized and suggested that we request a table on our next reservation. The food is excellent---lots of delicious small plates as well as entrees. It's a good place for sharing dishes. It's not cheap but the food is reasonably priced in my opinion for what you get.
This was our first time here and we hit this restaurant on what I hope was just a really off night. It smelled like there was a situation in the kitchen, the food took forever to arrive and the staff couldn’t quite explain what was going on in an intelligent way. We’ll try again.
The purple cauliflower with a Thai vinaigrette is a must! The other dishes were well presented and the flights of wine were a fun tasting experience, especially the orange wine. The servers were young and enthusiastic. The chocolate mousse was luscious. A memorable meal!
Great find in Westwood. Cozy, intimate place with delicious food and attentive service. We watched the cooking team prepare our meal from comfortable bar seats. Dine LA menu was great deal...outstanding gazpacho, nectarine salad, striped bass, and more...super fresh and beautifully presented. We will be back!
Jus a bit surprised that the extensive wine list did not include a single cabernet. Was told that the wine curator liked to expose patrons to new experiences, but we had to settle for a not-so-good wine because the "by the glass" list was very small and rather undiscovered wines. It is good to cater to wine connaisseurs who want to be surprised, but you can also have foodies who want their staple good pinot or cab.
The food is amazing and worth the trip in any case. I just might not bring the friend who's knowledge in wine stays in the chianti/cab varietals.
Fun, different, tasty food. Sometimes they mix foods that aren't to my taste. For example, the cheesecake pudding was tasty but they had this guava icee on top of it. Two different desserts, each great separately but together?
Go at Happy Hour as otherwise it is expensive...
Love the decor. Unfortunately added a bit to the noise level, but simple, straightforward and comfortable. Service was attentive and helpful (letting us order on happy hour with only 5 minutes to go was very kind). We were remiss in not letting our server know that we were headed to the theater, so we created a bit of a jam in getting our food which was a bit slow. Very accomodating to allergies. Thank you.
Food was inventive, but a bit uneven. Cauliflower was terrific, albeit a bit spicier than I like. I liked the nectarine salad, but quite heavy on the nectarines. Others at the table liked their burgers which looked well prepared. Steak tartare was less exciting, though I liked the toast. Roasted vegetables were less exciting.
Overall, a decent meal and worth exploring again.
Dine at Confidential LA when Visitng from Canada with my 12-year Old on Daddy Daughter trip to California. Typically she can be a bit of picky eater. She LOVED it. As did I. So much so we went back two nights later. Highly recommend. Good for casual eve, or would be good for casual date night. Steak is amazing. As is the Cauliflower. Will visit again when back in LA.
Exceptional experience in every respect. Highly original cooking with unique flavor combinations that are beautifully prepared. Every dish was outstanding. Wine list eclectic and interesting. Enthusiastically recommended for those who appreciate quality food in a low-key setting.
Requested a different table since we were the first part for dinner there. They told us they couldn't because the larger tables would be filled by larger groups. Lo and behold an hour later the larger tables were still empty and when a party did fill one of the tables, it was the same size as our party. The management consists of either liars or people who are discriminatory. I would give them ZERO stars for their service if possible.
