FuGaKyu Japanese Cuisine Ratings and Reviews
We had a very nice meal, and the third floor dining area was comfortable with a low noise level. Our server was attentive and friendly. We all were impressed by the quality of the food. Overall it was a very enjoyable outing, except for the price, which was a bit of a shock. I should have done the math as we ordered, but since only one of the four of us had wine, I didn't. To be fair, we had dessert, so that added to it, and it wasn't crazy expensive, just more than I had expected. Next time we'll skip dessert.
We took our two children, aged 9 and 11, to Fugakyu following an afternoon at the theater/ballet. We had come as a family once before, and we all loved it. This time was no surprise: the food was excellent and the ambiance great (we requested and obtained a private booth). Quality was superb, and quantity was more than adequate. It was 20 degrees outside, so we enjoyed the warm ambiance, and the hot food when presented. A great meal all around. We are now inviting our friends to come to Fugakyu with us, to reserve one of the upstairs tables for groups: what a blast!
I have liked Fugakyu for years. I always order the unami, but the Sudbury restaurant does a better job. It is fatty--or something that makes it less appealing than the same dish in Sudbury. Other than that, it is an enjoyable experience: quiet, calm, pleasant surroundings, good service.
This restaurant was generally hailed as the best Japanese restaurant in Boston, and a must have experience, however we were less than impressed by the price of the meal and the overall quality. We tried some of the cocktails listed on the menu, but they were less than impressive. I don't think we'll be visiting again. We went to Osaka Steakhouse in Brookline and had a much better time, for significantly less than we paid here.
We come to FuGaKyu quite a bit and the last few times the service has been really lacking. We are always pleased with the food however we felt this last time that the food was not as fresh. Also, the video playing on the big screens were absolutely gross to watch while eating dinner. Please change that! Spiders, bulls fighting...not exactly what you want to watch while trying to enjoy a meal. No hot towels were given to us and our sever was not very friendly. Plates were dirty and overall we feel like the quality has gone down quite a bit. We will try it again and hope for a better experience but not impressed with the last few times we have been in.
As part of the reservation, I requested to be seated in a booth on the first floor (since it was a special occasion). The restaurant completely ignored this and took us all the way up to the third floor to a room that was very hot with outdated decor and horrible piped in music playing with the speaker right above our table. It was disappointing to say the least and put a damper on the entire dinner. Food was good...not great.
I'm pretty salty after getting a bad table (tucked away in a corner away from all the fun). I wrote birthday on my request here and I guess it didn't matter. This restaurant's food is ok and not worth the price premium. The restaurant's main selling point is the atmosphere, but we didn't get to enjoy it.
This was our first time here for dinner. There were 6 of us on a triple date and we were seated in a booth that had paper screen doors that closed to give us privacy. It made for a super private evening for our group. Great service and the sushi was delicious. It was easy to get a reservation and even though we were 20 minutes late, they held our table with no problem. We will definitely be back!
I absolutely love the food and like to sit downstairs. This time we were in the upstairs back room which felt random and we felt forgotten about at times. There was also a large TV on mute showing a strange video about cooking Japanese food, which was distracting and took away from the feel of an upscale restaurant. I have been coming here for 10 years as it's the best sushi, but try to sit in the main part of the restaurant!
There were several empty private small rooms when we arrived. We did have a reservation.
When I asked to be seated in one, we were told that they were all booked. For the entire two hours we were there, no one sat in any of them. Instead we were put at a small table right near the entrance, not great. I think it is just easier for them to put you at tables. Hostess had an attitude on top of it. Food wasn't bad, but very expensive for what it was. I will not return.
