It seemed like a good idea when we booked this place, and even once there, things looked promising.
We ordered two apps and they came in 5 to 10 minutes between one and the other.
First we got the shrimp bacon, this was two pieces of shrimp in a fatty bacon it couldn’t be chewed. I think it was $13 for that.
The second app was the Lobster Tempura, a complete bust, $22 for a 4 piece deep fried roll with not even an oz of lobster.
We left after this.
We understand ambience, cuisine, and the whole experience plays a roll in pricing and we were looking for a high level experience but this place is way overpriced for the overall experience.
Birthday evening with family
Service was spot on!
We always enjoy our food at FuGaKyu. We have been patronizing this restaurant for many years. I feel they are taking Covid very seriously with temperature checks, wipe down of tables and booths, and all staff being masked. During this visit, service was a little slow; but we totally understand this during this time and the restaurant was a little more busy for a weekday than we expected. The presentation of the food is always beautiful and the menu is quite extensive with many unusual selections. The only disappointment was on our tempura appetizer. The serving size was sparse-but we all enjoyed it. Please give this restaurant a try. You'll want to come back if you do; as we have for over two decades.
Excellent food…terrible service-
Very, very fine sushi and service. Lovely, private dining areas for each party.
It’s very cool in there. I think with everything going on in the world, restaurants are short staffed, so maybe that’s why everything seemed rushy and our waitress seemed annoyed.
Excellent quality food, great ambience and service. The restaurant is often busy so I would suggest booking in advance.
The restaurant was nice and the way the staff and set up during COVID is handled really well. The food was just okay - the appetizer sushi was good but the entrees we ordered were not that good.
I have enjoyed dining at Fugakyu for years and it never disappoints. Pleasant staff with fast service and incredible food! Always a treat!
I have tried tons of Japanese restaurants in the Boston area and Fugakyu is my favorite by far. Fish is always fresh. They have interesting and unusual items on the menu. Service is fast and prices are good
Absolutley AMAZING experience, it was my friends birthday and they brought out a deciduous fried icecream! Will definitely be back soon!!!! THANK YOU!!!
Beautiful atmosphere- super friendly/great waiter- warm/kind greeting- great food!! Can’t wait to go back!
My favorite sushi place in Brookline! The food is incredible and they use such great quality ingredients. Our waitress was so wonderful, I wish I got her name! They gave us a delicious tiramisu since it was my friend's birthdays. The ambience is amazing too. The decorations are so cool inside, the seating is so unique, and the plating of the food is incredible. It really adds to the experience!
Food was amazing and service was great.
Wonderful atmosphere. Our server was wonderful - busy night but he kept checking in with us. The food was great.
Fabulous dinner, as usual!
Edamame was cold which was unexpected, but still delivious
We had a wonderful meal at Fugakyu celebrating my daughter's birthday. We love Japanese food and that is our number one restaurant choice but this meal was outstanding-fresh, distinct and delicious. The service was great. Our little private booth was so enjoyable. Exceptional!
Had the sukiyaki for 2 along with some sushi rolls. Everything was delicious!
Fugakyu is our go-to Japanese restaurant in Boston, having sampled perhaps dozens. It has been our favorite for nearly 10 years. With COVID, we had not been to Boston to eat for about 1.5 years, and we were looking forward to renewing our experience. Service was great, as the restaurant was not too crowded at our early hour. The food was good, but not as exceptional as we remembered. We prepare Japanese cuisine at home, and love to come to Fugakyu for more ideas of what to prepare. The sushi we ordered was not remarkable: good taste, decent presentation, but not outstanding. We always order "uni" but it was missing this visit. We had a good, enjoyable family outing, but not outstanding as we were expecting based on our previous visits.
The quality and freshness of the fish has never come into question. The sushi has always been exceptional every time we’ve come.
The presentation however, varies from time to time. There have been times we’ve been blown away with the plating but not so much this time but it was moderately busy.
The place actually improved from Feb 2020. Inventive new dishes and top quality fish
Good option for the business lunch - fast, efficient, and tasty. The restaurant is more like a traditional “American” Japanese, it’s not Izakaya. Excellent and attentive staff. Thank you!
Server wasn’t very friendly and then was harassing me about the tip amount and wasn’t letting me leave asking why the amount was so low. It made me feel very uncomfortable and I paid the extra in cash and left.
Excellent sushi, great service and they were able to fulfill our request of a booth with sliding doors. They also offered a fried ice cream on the house for my daughter’s birthday.
The food was much worse than it used to be. The fish (sushi) didn’t look fresh and wasn’t cut properly. Our waiter didn’t speak English so it was impossible to ask him questions.
We used to love this restaurant but doubt will go there again soon
The food was great, fresh and tasty, and the service was helpful but not intrusive. We had a close-off table, so the noise around us wasn't a problem at all. It was a lovely place to gather and catch up with friends!
Great food, service and ambiance. Would go back again.
The sushi was good and the ambience pleasant at Fugakyu. Mom and I went here for July 4th dinner. It was a little strange to be in an small room but with a couple we didn’t know. We were at a different table but they were only about 6 feet away so we could here every word they said. It would be really cool to sit in that space with a group of 6 or 8, half at each table.
The sushi was tasty. We got Nigiri, fresh water eel. Sweet potato tempura and miso soup appetizers.
All in all, a tasty dinner in a nice space. Service was efficient and the server polite.
This is our favorite Japanese restaurant. The food is well prepared and fresh. The tempura is flawless as well as the ramen noodles with beef. We love the Gynza, shui mai and chicken wings. The sushi is wonderful and couldn’t be better.
The restaurant has a wonderful atmosphere and the people running the show are fabulous.
Only sushi is decent
I really wanted to like this place. The decor is beautiful and it’s a huge place and the drink was really good.
And now here’s the rub:
Our food took 40 minutes to arrive and the apps and entrees came out at the same time. Everything was cold. Cold is expected for sushi, but we ordered shumai and gyozas and they were less than lukewarm.
I got a duck dish that was supposed to be spicy but wasn’t, and the staff explained to me afterwards that it’s spicy but not really (which is not how my server described it when she recommended it) and it was so cold that the duck skin congealed like fat. It took me another 15 minutes to flag someone down (calling on people constantly) so I could ask them to heat up my food. At this point I just wanted them to microwave it, which they did but it took them another 10 minutes to just microwave and get the food to me. They gave us a complimentary dessert and a 5% discount but that doesn’t even begin to undo the disaster that was our experience. I’ll never go back there and don’t recommend to anyone. If you’re feeling sushi, go somewhere else.
what a disappointment!!!
one of my favorite japanese restaurant in the boston area has become the worst.
once the freshest sushi has become "meh" at best.
service was below standard, "computer glitch" was the excuse for the messed up order.
i hope they get this feedback and start improving back.
update - in addition to the lousy service, we were billed twice for dinner - instead of $327, we were charged $327 twice and fugakyu "cannot" find the second charge, their answer - "call your credit card company and get them to reverse the charge".
Fugakyu is one of the first places we ate when we moved to the area, and has always been one of our favorite restaurants. We were thrilled when things started opening back up and looking forward to going back. Unfortunately, we had a terribly disappointing experience. We'll probably give it one more shot at some point, but after that, I think we would stop going back -- it's too expensive to not have great food and great service.
The food was OK but not fabulous as it used to be. The fish was very fresh, which is the most important thing. But the agedashi tofu was a bit soggy and the sauce was underseasoned; the appetizer roll (I forget what it was called) was bland; and the cocktail was off-balance. The amaebi doesn't come with fried shrimp heads (which is ridiculous; that's the defining feature of amaebi), so we had to order the "live amaebi" at twice the price, and it was nothing special. Worst of all was the entree duck -- the meat was fine if a bit overcooked, but there was a ton of skin/fat, none of it rendered -- just a big pile of flabby, chewy, flavorless fat on top of a very small amount of tasty duck meat.
The service was frankly unacceptable. Nobody came to take our order for 15-20 minutes. Finally we ordered our food; waited interminably, and then *every single thing we'd ordered* came out all at the same time. Everything was just jammed onto the table. The live amaebi came on a platter with a huge straw decoration, and the server put that down in such a way that the decoration jutted off the table and nearly stabbed me. My niece ordered what she thought was ramune, but was instead very mispronounced (and also weak and watery) lemonade, and that didn't come until we had asked about it repeatedly and all of our food had arrived. We couldn't get anybody's attention to bring the check; and when they did bring the check, we had to wave it wildly to get someone to take the credit card.
I know that there is an employee shortage but this was beyond that.
Food is #1, best Japanese ever (except maybe for actually being in Japan). Service a bit haphazard as they gear up post pandemic. Also can be rather loud, depending on where you sit. Blinking yellow strobe lights in the section to the left as you walk in, where we sat, were very annoying- detracted from the meal- they really should get rid of them.
BUT, the excellence of the food more than compensates for any of the above. Don't miss this restaurant!
