FuGaKyu Japanese Cuisine
Wine list could be better but the food is great. All the private booths are excellent.
Excellent food. The new renovations allow for quiet private dining. We asked the staff to turn off the video screen in the room which they did immediately. Some may choose to watch video of sushi being made but good to know you can choose to pass.
Intricately designed high-quality sushi in Tokyo-style sliding door booths. Wonderful and attentive staff and a great place to gather with 3-4 people to catch up and chat due to the closed off nature of the booths. Excellent sake menu as well with unexpectedly well priced bottles for the quality.
Not nearly as good as Marketplace location.
The food is great, service is fine. HOWEVER, I made a reservation online for Thanksgiving lunch via OpenTable, and I checked their schedule that they open on that day. When I arrive, they were closed!!! I never gotten any notification from the restaurant or OpenTable about schedule has changed. I had to made alternate plans for Thanksgiving and I had my whole family with me.
Have been going to Sudbury location since childhood but Brookline location needs help. Despite having a reservation and confirming the reservation they would not seat my wife until my daughter and I were present delisted my wife communicating that we were walking from home 2 blocks away. I spoke to the manger about this and was told that’s their policy. I’ve never been to restaurant that does this and does not offer the customer a complimentary item, very poor service for a higher end restaurant. I should also add that there was no apology at all by the manger who honestly seemed like he wasn’t qualified for the position.
Regarding service one waiter spiller a drink all over a customer, our waitress came by only once to fill water, and the green tea was bland and seemed like it was probably microwaved. At the end of the meal another food handler delivered our check then stepped on my foot while I was seated at the table.
The food was present reasonably nicely but it’s definitely “not Japanese food” but a heavy Chinese fusion. This restaurant used to be very good but changed ownership years ago. Since the service has become atrocious, they reply on the decor of the restaurant which is nice, but the food was defiantly in the quality range of $10-16 per entree though the prices are $$.
I go back once and a while here hoping things improve and just keep getting disappointed each time. There are many other much better Japanese Restaurants in the area, next time we’ll be skipping FuGaKyu.
I have been bringing my Mom (89 yo) here for her Birthday for the past 8+ years Always a pleasant experience and Awesome food
FuGaKyu has been a favorite spot for us for many years. We've found the sushi & maki reliably excellent. An evening with dinner at FuGaKyu followed by a film at the Coolidge Corner Theater makes for an excellent outing!
Haven’t been here in years and was happy to see that it is as good as I remember!
Outstanding. The drinks were amazing, as was the food (there was a wide variety of choices, all excellent). The waitress was charming, very helpful in her suggestions, and prompt. Great place to celebrate a momentous occasion, as was this one. The experience, from the maitre d'hote to the settling of the account went seamlessly. All staff were very professional, courteous and attentive. The event was all I hoped to be.
I did not give five stars because it lacked in coziness. Only one thing stood in the way of the restaurant from being perfect: the screens showing the preparation of the food, present throughout the restaurant. Though watching how food is prepared is interesting, this detract from the enjoyment of the occasion. It is not always appetizing to see food being prepared while you wish to have a special occasion. The screens were particularly annoying in the booths. where they felt overpowering. Also, the acoustics in the booth were not the best: it was hard to hold a conversation. I think perhaps the screens would work best in the bar and waiting area. The food and the waitress, however, made up for inconvenience to a large extent, but still took away from the magic of the evening
The food was delicious and the service was quick. The booths were nice.
Food was good (except for the undercooked chicken on the Ramen). Service was very, very slow.
My favorite place to go with and without my kids. The staff is warm and kind and we all love it!
My kids love the food and I love this sushi over any other sushi any time.
so fresh, so fresh and so yummi!
Very expensive, boring food. $30 for a hunk of salmon or tuna on rice? Teriyaki chicken was a breast of chicken with teriyaki sauce poured in it. A few icky veggies were also on the plate. Certainly NOT a meal worth getting in a restaurant. The butterfish, which is one of my favorite cooked fish, was tough and tasteless raw. Needless to say, we won’t be going back.
We booked an upstairs table on open table and they said they never hit the message. They sai it would be a 45-1 hour wait for upstairs table. Menu was confusing. Limited wines
Food was delicious, service was terrible. Get the yellow tail but be prepared to wait. If you have a birthday, make sure you EXPLICITLY say that you want a candle in the dessert. Maybe remind them too. I ordered mochi for a bday and they didn’t even put a candle in.
I really liked the decore. I'm a native Japanese and I love eating Japanese food. The sushi here is disappointing because the fish was not fresh. I much prefer Cafe sushi for the quality of sushi. Other food was fine but not worth the money. If you don't really care about food but like to experience eating at exotic environment, this place is good for that. I won't return unless someone is paying for my meal because I care about the food.
Food and atmosphere very good as was service until it was time for bill. It took a while to get server back to us but I suppose he was busier than we arrived,
I had my 75th birthday recently and wanted to treat some of my close friends to a meal they would remember. My first choice was FuGaKyu. I introduced them to some great unfiltered sake and a wonderful assortment of sushi and sashimi. It was indeed a memorable evening. A couple weren't up for raw fish, but they enjoyed soup, entrees from your kitchen, and seaweed salad which is always one of my favorites - tabiko on top makes it particularly special. We all appreciated an attentive waitress.
The door was really good. I had been there once before and it was for a friend’s birthday. The setting was perfect.
Fantastic sushi rolls! We really enjoyed the variety of tools to choose from for our dinner.
We were a group of 10 for a birthday celebration. The food was outstanding, and made the occasion wonderful. It was essentially a really successful dinner. We were seated in our own space at one of those not quite sitting on the floor deals for which NO SHOES -- I would have warned guests to wear or carry socks/slippers had I known we were in this room, but I had no idea that was the plan. The server was terrific. The only blot on the night was the way the hostess greeting us was cold, peremptory, unfriendly, and unclear until we had been kept waiting a while that she needed 6 of our party to be present before she could seat us. This, even though the guest of honor was wearing an oxygen setup and it really would have been far more gracious for all if we could have been in our space at our table as we arrived. It was ungracious, as if we were liars about the size of our group? It was rude and really a jarring start to the evening. DO BETTER up front! Seriously. Communicate with your patrons as if you are happy they are eating in your restaurant, not as if they are trying to pull a fast one and need to be challenged suspiciously. There were older people, a disabled person, and this rudeness from front of house took some getting over.
Excellent food! We order crazy items for our children and the staff is both helpful and great! Food is amazing and so so fresh!
This restaurant has a very wide variety of both sushi and cooked Japanese foods. Ambiance is great
Excellent ambiance and food. The noise level was high this visit, since we were seated back to back to a very noisy party and we were only separated by a curtain. Polite service and the pace was slow, three hours. That was not a problem.
Expensive restaurant with average food quality- better off with other cheaper and better food quality Japanese restaurants
Muy bueno su udon y edamames al ajo y excelente sushi
The services was slow and the food mediocre
Some background music of Japanese vintage would have made it perfect.
Lighting is way too dark - they have to fix that
Fresh fish! Well prepared.
Always good sushi and other Japanese cusine. However, it is not cheap about $50 per person.
Best sushi in Boston area. Best miso soup also.
Be careful when ordering especially if you are hungry. It adds up. Best kids menu as well.
Very good and large variety of dishes. Wonderful presentation!
Love fugakyu. The food is delicious and filling. Good, clean food
Food always spectacular in taste and creativity, and beautiful to see!
You can tell if the sushi is fresh quickly and our makimono was some of the best we've had in Boston. It was very fresh and simply delicious. A little pricey but we didn't go to get Makimono/sushi to save money. It's a very good value for excellent food.
Great sushi place!
Haven't been in like a decade...still good. The service was great. I had ramen soup that was quite good.
